ADVERTISING

The growing popularity of soccer in the U.S. represents a cultural shift that offers “a great way for brands to authentically connect with younger American consumers,” according to Adriana Waterson, SVP of insights and strategy for Horowitz Research. Three in four (75%) Hispanic Millennials are soccer fans and are more likely to be fans of soccer versus American football (71%), basketball (71%), baseball (68%) and boxing (66%), according to a study from NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises in partnership with Horowitz. Six in ten Hispanic Millennials and 29% of non-Hispanic Millennials agree that soccer will be as popular in the U.S. as American football and baseball in the next five years, and 70% of Hispanics believing that interest in the FIFA World Cup in the U.S. particularly will continue to grow over the next five years. “Findings from our study demonstrate how soccer, brands and audiences are intimately connected not just through live games,” said Lia Silkworth, SVP for insights and consumer development, NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, “but digitally and socially, and in personalized settings with friends and family.”

Through the quarter finals, TV advertising for the 2018 FIFA World Cup on U.S. networks has topped $250 million. NBCUni’s nets have scored $152.4 million, led by $143.1 million for Telemundo, while Fox nets have earned $107.7 million, with Fox broadcast landing a $82.6 million chunk of that total.

Doing good could pay off for advertisers eager to reach teens. 69% of 14-to-17-year-olds trust a company more if they know it supports a cause, with 62% more likely to buy its products, according to a study from Fuse. 50% of respondents said they believe a brand’s cause is genuine if it makes a financial contribution, while employees working on an issue convinces 50% of teens the commitment is genuine. Top five issues of concern: Education, jobs/unemployment, prejudice/racism, the environment, and terrorism.

While 88% of CEO’s in consumer and retail businesses think investments to personalize customer experience have delivered the anticipated growth, 48% of the retailers feel the experiences do not meet their expectations, according to “The KPMG Growing Pains U.S. CEO Outlook 2018.” Study is based on a survey of 400 U.S. CEOs.

MEASUREMENT & DATA

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has published standards for binding Ad-IDs to commercials and Entertainment ID Registry codes to programming content, using Kantar Media’s audio watermarking technology. Standards are aimed at mitigating inefficiencies in the cross-platform video distribution and measurement workflow, including legacy processes for matching program and ad names back to the time of airing and the distributor. “This standard has been called the media industry’s equivalent of the Universal Product Code (UPC) code,” said Jane Clarke, CEO and managing director of the Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement. “Similar to the standardized ID that improved accuracy and efficiency for the retail consumer packaged-goods industry, Ad-ID and EIDR will enable advertising and content identifiers to remain embedded throughout the media distribution ecosystem.”
