Good morning. It’s Tuesday June 13, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The Penguins’ clincher in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final cemented recent viewership trends for the series on NBC channels as the Penguins’ win averaged a TAD of 7.086 million viewers, up 29% vs. last year’s Cup-clinching Game 6 on NBC featuring Pittsburgh and San Jose. Overall, the six-game 2017 Stanley Cup Final produced a Total Audience Delivery (TAD) of 4.762 million average viewers, making it the most-watched Stanley Cup Final on record without an Original Six team, according to Fast National Ratings from The Nielsen Company and digital data from Adobe Analytics. Across 84 games on the NBC Sports family tree, the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs averaged a TAD of 1.387 million viewers, up 11% vs. the 2016 postseason. Digitally, last night’s Game 6 delivered an Average Minute Audience of 101,000 viewers, the highest-ever for an NHL game, and up 47% vs. last year.
 
 
ON THE AIR

In other ratings news, Univision’s showdown between USA/Mexico ranked as the most-viewed soccer match on any network this year, according to the company (with a simulcast on UDN), averaging 4.5 million viewers with 2.5 million Adults 18-49 who watched the World Cup Qualifier, according to Nielsen. That also marks the top World Cup Qualifier match in any language on any network since 3/26/13.
 
FOX Sports unveiled its full television schedule and programming plan for the 117th US Open Championship with live coverage running on FS1 on Thursday and Friday from 11a-6p before shifting to the FOX broadcast network from 6-9p. FOX broadcasts third round coverage from 11a-8p on Saturday with final round coverage from 11-8:30p on Sunday. FOX Deportes televises more than six hours of tournament coverage in Spanish in the US for the third time from 5-8p on Saturday and 5-8:30p on Sunday. For the first time ever, the company programs will also travel to the tournament, and Thurs/Fri programming will include special editions of FS1’s Skip and Shannon: Undisputed originate live from Erin Hills.
 
Telemundo announced plans for its news and entertainment shows to broadcast from Russia during the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017, as a means of supplementing the channel’s broadcast of the tournament. With the FIFA Confederations Cup kicking off on Saturday with the Opening Ceremony at 9a, Telemundo’s shows and its team of anchors and reporters will report from Gorky Park in Moscow and various locations throughout Russia, including Un Nuevo Dia, Noticias Telemundo, and Al Rojo Vivo con Maria Celeste. Meanwhile, the Noticias Telemundo digital team will produce a digital series Los Perez Troikos, documenting the experiences and adventures of its reporters and the production team while in Russia, while Suelta la Sopa will feature segments and special reports around the tournament.
 
Australia is going all in for a bid to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023, according to The Advertiser. The bid is backed by up to $5 million in federal funding with cities that include Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Canberra are expected to frontrunners to host the 24-team tournament. The Federal Government has pledged $1 million in initial funding and will commit a further $4 million in December if Australia is deemed a reasonable hosting prospect and they are satisfied with FIFA’s process.
 
NFL Network detailed programming plans for its slate of 65 preseason games in 2017, which will include 16 live games beginning Aug. 9 at 7:30p with the Texans/Panthers.  Other early games will include the Bears/Broncos on Aug. 10 at 8p and Chiefs/49ers on Aug. 11 at 10p. All NFL Network programming – including re-airs of all 65 preseason games – can also be streamed on its digital outlets.
 
Bellator announced that Dave Navarro will perform the national anthem prior to the main event for Bellator NYC: Sonnen vs. Silva from Madison Square Garden on June 24. The event runs on pay-per-view beginning at 10p, with Spike set to air Bellator 180: Davis vs. Bader ahead of time beginning at 8p.
 
SiriusXM is again on deck as the exclusive national radio broadcaster for the US Open Championship, from June 15-18. Programming will feature more than 30 hours of live hole-by-hole coverage across all four rounds of play. Live championship coverage will begin each championship day at 1noon on both FOX Sports on SiriusXM (SiriusXM ch. 83) and SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio (Sirius ch. 208, XM ch. 92). SiriusXM’s Brian Katrek will anchor the play-by-play broadcast with former PGA Tour pro Mark Carnevale serving as the analyst in the booth.

The Drone Racing League lined up multi-year, international partners and sponsors ahead of its 2017 race season. After announcing Allianz as the title sponsor of DRL’s elite race circuit in Feb., other partners will include Amazon (Prime Video), Swatch, FORTO Coffee Shots and the U.S. Air Force. The season begins on June 20 on ESPN, and will be broadcast in more than 75 countries with broadcast partners including Sky Sports, ProSiebenSat.1, Disney XD and OSN. In addition, DRL also announced the close of a Series B investment round with total financing topping $20 million, led by Sky, Liberty Media Corporation and Lux Capital.
 
College sports marketer Learfield acquired the Spectra’s Ticketing & Fan Engagement division—formerly known as Paciolan—from Comcast Spectacor. The company will again be known as Paciolan. “We have long admired Paciolan,” said Learfield President and CEO Greg Brown. “Not only is it a great service with a number of segment-leading products, the reputation of its people, beginning with its founders and current management, is without peer. We couldn’t be happier and look forward to having Paciolan as part of the Learfield family.”
 
Ahead of Father’s Day on Sunday, multiple brands are leveraging sports with a dedicated campaign. Here are a few on deck…
  • Courtyard, the “Official Hotel of the NFL,” tackles the holiday by showcasing “what happens when a Hall of Fame dad receives a Hall of Fame-worthy surprise” beginning with a tour of the brand new Vikings Voyage, inclusive of a personalized Hall of Fame father exhibit just for him, and Jared Allen serving as a special tour guide
  • Buffalo Wild Wings produced a video, “Watching,” that “gives thanks to all of the fathers who taught and showed us how to be a true sports fan.” The video opens on a budding sports fan and follows her range of emotions to a suspenseful basketball game. As the announcer calls the end of the game, the viewer realizes that the young girl has actually been mimicking her father’s reactions (unknown to him) as they watched the game together.
  • NFL stars Rob Gronkowski and Richard Sherman are introducing “The Jerky Tie,” made completely out of Oberto Beef Jerky for fathers Gordon Gronkowski and Kevin Sherman. Oberto released videos on YouTube and social of Gronk and Sherman creating their ties.
 
DIGITAL & STREAMING

The Olympic Channel reached cooperation agreements with the International Federation of American Football and World Bridge Federation (to collaborate on content for the global platform, bringing the number of the federation partners who have announced similar agreements with the Olympic Channel to 54. “We are excited to welcome these two new partners to the Olympic Channel,” said Mark Parkman, general manager of the Olympic Channel. “The global platform continues to evolve and provide more opportunities to all sports within the Olympic Movement as we work together to expand the reach of these sports and introduce new sports to our audiences.”
 
 
ESPORTS

E3 saw Intel and ESL announced a deal to deepen their ties, with Intel now serving as the Global Technical Partner of ESL, with touchpoints that include from global events such as Intel Extreme Masters, ESL Pro League and ESL One to National Championships and online tournament platforms, as well as studio and broadcasting operations. Intel will now provide PC’s for all participating teams and players and high-performance processors. In addition, the company’s announced plans for the all new Intel Grand Slam for CS:GO, dangling an additional $1 million prize to the first team that can win four out of the last ten $200,000 events held between DreamHack and ESL.
 
Meanwhile, Bethesda revealed during its press conference that the Quake World Championship will take place on Aug 26 at QuakeCon, with $1 million on the line. In cooperation with id Software and Bethesda, ESL announced its partnership in the competition with Duel (1v1) and Sacrifice (4v4) competitions beginning this month.
 
ELeague will partner with sister company Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment to bring NetherRealm Studios’ super-powered fighting game Injustice 2 to the organization as part of the first-ever ELeague Injustice 2 World Championship. Competition will see the top 16 Injustice 2 players in the world face off for $250,000 in prize money. Featured matches throughout the tournament will be presented live on TBS, with live coverage of every match available via digital platforms beginning with the Open Qualifier on Oct. 21.
 
 
ROSTER MOVES

Motosport TV announced that Kevin Annison will join Motorsport Network as President. The appointment comes one week after former NASCAR Digital Media Vice President, Colin Smith, joined Motorsport Network as CEO. Annison will lead the team as the newly renamed Motorsport.tv expands from its European cable and satellite roots, to a global internet television network reaching large and small screens of race fans around the world.
