The Drone Racing League lined up multi-year, international partners and sponsors ahead of its 2017 race season. After announcing Allianz as the title sponsor of DRL’s elite race circuit in Feb., other partners will include Amazon (Prime Video), Swatch, FORTO Coffee Shots and the U.S. Air Force. The season begins on June 20 on ESPN, and will be broadcast in more than 75 countries with broadcast partners including Sky Sports, ProSiebenSat.1, Disney XD and OSN. In addition, DRL also announced the close of a Series B investment round with total financing topping $20 million, led by Sky, Liberty Media Corporation and Lux Capital.
College sports marketer Learfield acquired the Spectra’s Ticketing & Fan Engagement division—formerly known as Paciolan—from Comcast Spectacor. The company will again be known as Paciolan. “We have long admired Paciolan,” said Learfield President and CEO Greg Brown. “Not only is it a great service with a number of segment-leading products, the reputation of its people, beginning with its founders and current management, is without peer. We couldn’t be happier and look forward to having Paciolan as part of the Learfield family.”

- Courtyard, the “Official Hotel of the NFL,” tackles the holiday by showcasing “what happens when a Hall of Fame dad receives a Hall of Fame-worthy surprise” beginning with a tour of the brand new Vikings Voyage, inclusive of a personalized Hall of Fame father exhibit just for him, and Jared Allen serving as a special tour guide
- Buffalo Wild Wings produced a video, “Watching,” that “gives thanks to all of the fathers who taught and showed us how to be a true sports fan.” The video opens on a budding sports fan and follows her range of emotions to a suspenseful basketball game. As the announcer calls the end of the game, the viewer realizes that the young girl has actually been mimicking her father’s reactions (unknown to him) as they watched the game together.
- NFL stars Rob Gronkowski and Richard Sherman are introducing “The Jerky Tie,” made completely out of Oberto Beef Jerky for fathers Gordon Gronkowski and Kevin Sherman. Oberto released videos on YouTube and social of Gronk and Sherman creating their ties.
The Olympic Channel reached cooperation agreements with the International Federation of American Football and World Bridge Federation (to collaborate on content for the global platform, bringing the number of the federation partners who have announced similar agreements with the Olympic Channel to 54. “We are excited to welcome these two new partners to the Olympic Channel,” said Mark Parkman, general manager of the Olympic Channel. “The global platform continues to evolve and provide more opportunities to all sports within the Olympic Movement as we work together to expand the reach of these sports and introduce new sports to our audiences.”
E3 saw Intel and ESL announced a deal to deepen their ties, with Intel now serving as the Global Technical Partner of ESL, with touchpoints that include from global events such as Intel Extreme Masters, ESL Pro League and ESL One to National Championships and online tournament platforms, as well as studio and broadcasting operations. Intel will now provide PC’s for all participating teams and players and high-performance processors. In addition, the company’s announced plans for the all new Intel Grand Slam for CS:GO, dangling an additional $1 million prize to the first team that can win four out of the last ten $200,000 events held between DreamHack and ESL.
Meanwhile, Bethesda revealed during its press conference that the Quake World Championship will take place on Aug 26 at QuakeCon, with $1 million on the line. In cooperation with id Software and Bethesda, ESL announced its partnership in the competition with Duel (1v1) and Sacrifice (4v4) competitions beginning this month.
ELeague will partner with sister company Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment to bring NetherRealm Studios’ super-powered fighting game Injustice 2 to the organization as part of the first-ever ELeague Injustice 2 World Championship. Competition will see the top 16 Injustice 2 players in the world face off for $250,000 in prize money. Featured matches throughout the tournament will be presented live on TBS, with live coverage of every match available via digital platforms beginning with the Open Qualifier on Oct. 21.
Motosport TV announced that Kevin Annison will join Motorsport Network as President. The appointment comes one week after former NASCAR Digital Media Vice President, Colin Smith, joined Motorsport Network as CEO. Annison will lead the team as the newly renamed Motorsport.tv expands from its European cable and satellite roots, to a global internet television network reaching large and small screens of race fans around the world.
