06/12/18: Fox Sports to feature more than 160 hours of live coverage at U.S. Open

Good morning. It’s Tuesday June 12, 2018 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.


With the U.S. Open just two days away from teeing off, FOX Sports revealed its full programming schedule and crew of broadcasters for golf’s second major championship of the year, set for June 14-17 at New York’s Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

FOX will feature more than 160 hours of live coverage, highlighted by over 45 hours on the FOX Sports family of networks, including 23.5 hours scheduled for the FOX broadcast network. Coverage begins Tuesday, June 12 at 4:30 PM ET on FS1 with a new “Celebration of Champions” event, an exhibition featuring reigning USGA champions playing in a foursomes competition.

The main broadcast starts Thursday with the tournament’s opening round, televised on FS1 from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM ET, before moving to the FOX broadcast network from 4:30 to 7:30 PM. The following day, second-round action airs on FS1 from 10 AM to 4:30 PM, before shifting to FOX from 4:30 to 7:30 PM ET. FOX televises third round coverage from 11 AM ET to 7:30 PM on Saturday, followed by final-round coverage from 10 AM ET to 7 PM ET on Sunday. FOX Deportes will televise six hours of U.S. Open coverage in Spanish, from 4:30 to 7:30 PM ET on Saturday and 4 to 7 PM ET on Sunday. FOX Sports’ full U.S. Open coverage can be heard live on the radio via the FOX Sports SiriusXM channel (Channel 83).

Leading FOX Sports’ 2018 U.S. Open coverage is seven-time Emmy Award winner Joe Buck, who returns for his fourth championship and is joined in the 18th Tower for the third year by 1993 PGA Championship winner and lead analyst Paul Azinger. Play-by-play announcer Shane Bacon and eight-time PGA Tour winner Brad Faxon also contribute to the call throughout the championship.
Two-time U.S. Open Champion Curtis Strange returns as an on-course commentator and is joined on the fairways by four-time PGA Tour winner Steve Flesch, PGA Tour veteran Brett Quigley and four-time European Tour winner Ken Brown. Brown also brings Shinnecock Hills to life with his popular “Brownie Points” series throughout the week.

Holly Sonders hosts studio coverage throughout the championship, while reporter Shane O’Donoghue conducts pre- and post-round interviews. Renowned course architect Gil Hanse provides course and design analysis, and former USGA Executive Director David Fay weighs in as rules expert.

ESPN will present a special telecast for Tuesday’s, full-national game between the New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves, honoring Baseball Hall of Famer and MLB legend Hank Aaron at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. The 25-time MLB All-Star spent 21 of his 23-year playing career with the Braves, first in Milwaukee then in Atlanta. Aaron has continued his involvement with the team and is now the senior vice president of the Braves organization.

During the telecast, Aaron will join play-by-play commentator Dave Flemming and analysts Eduardo Pérez and Tim Kurkjian as a guest in the booth for multiple innings.
Aaron’s impact on the game and beyond will be celebrated throughout the telecast. Some of the highlights include:
  • Phone interviews with former Braves teammate Ralph Garr and Baseball Hall of Famer Billy Williams, one of the five Hall of Famers from Mobile, Alabama (including Aaron);
  • Sound bites from Hall of Famer Willie Mays and Dusty Baker, who was on-deck when Aaron hit his 715th home run, giving him the all-time record at the time. To this day, Aaron’s final number of 755 still remains second for most career home runs;
  • Past quotes from sports icons about Aaron, including Muhammad Ali, Mickey Mantle and others;
  • Highlights from his Hall of Fame career, which also included a World Series victory in 1957 with the Braves where he was named the National League MVP, three Gold Glove awards and being named batting champion twice.
NHL Network will air a national simulcast of the Washington Captitals’ championship parade and rally today, beginning at 10 a.m. ET.

Turner and the NBA announced that Grammy-nominated artist Travis Scott will perform at the NBA Awards on TNT, scheduled for Monday, June 25. Coverage begins at 9 p.m. ET. Scott will perform his hits “Butterfly Effect” and “Goosebumps”, honoring this year’s biggest and best moments from the 2018 NBA season. The show will be hosted by Anthony Anderson. The awards show, presented live from Los Angeles’s Barker Hangar, will include the presentations of the league’s MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Lifetime Achievement Award.

The TNT broadcast, which will feature current and former NBA players, coaches, and celebrity presenters, will feature appearances by TNT’S Inside the NBA team of Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Shaquille O’Neal throughout the show. In addition, Dikembe Mutombo will receive the Sager Strong Award, presented annually to an individual who has been a trailblazer while exemplifying courage, faith, compassion and grace.

FIFA, Budweiser and Twitter are making it easier for fans to vote for the Man of the Match Award during the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The partnership is a continuation of Man of the Match voting during the 2014 World Cup. The new Twitter voting platforms will offer an enhanced visual voting portal and will update to include active players on the pitch. Voting opens as soon as the first half of each match ends, via the voting portal at FIFA’s official @FIFAWorldCup on Twitter. Fans can vote, and even change their vote, until the match ends. Fans will simply choose the player they feel deserves to win the Man of the Match award and submit a vote via Twitter. Budweiser Man of the Match voting is available in five languages – English, Spanish, French, German and Portuguese. When voting concludes, @FIFAWorldCup will tweet the name of the winner as well as video of the match action and an interview with the Man of the Match.
DraftKings Inc. has applied for a sports betting license in New Jersey. Its application for a Casino Service Industry Enterprise License has been “accepted for filing” by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE), DraftKings said. DraftKings also recently announced it selected Resorts Casino Hotel as its New Jersey casino licensing partner, satisfying an expected regulatory requirement for the company to offer an online sports betting product in the state. As part of its planned move into New Jersey, DraftKings has named Karl Gambin as its Director of New Jersey Gaming Operations, based out the company’s new office in Hoboken, NJ. Gambin will lead DraftKings’ compliance, customer and regulatory activities in the state.
The USGA, Topgolf and Fox Sports will host “The Ultimate U.S. Open Watch Party” at all 38 Topgolf venues across the country on Thursday, June 14. Topgolf guests will be able to watch the competitors on TV while they hit their own shots from the comfort of a climate-controlled hitting bay. The watch party officially begins at 5 p.m. at each Topgolf venue as FOX Sports presents live first-round coverage of the tournament from Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y. Along with competing in games offered at Topgolf, guests will be able to watch the tournament on all Topgolf TVs until 7:30 p.m. During the watch party, fans will have the chance to win a trip to the 2019 U.S. Open at iconic Pebble Beach Golf Links by using the custom 118th U.S. Open filter to capture a memorable moment during the event. Topgolf guests in Edison, N.J.; Nashville, Tenn.; Charlotte, N.C.; Gilbert, Ariz., and Orlando and Tampa, Fla., will also be able to purchase U.S. Open merchandise on-site, including headwear, T-shirts, hole flags, drinkware and ball markers. 


The Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) inked a multiyear partnership with FloSports to stream every game hosted by a WCHA school live and on-demand exclusively on FloHockey.tv. The agreement brings more than 180 WCHA games a year to the FloSports streaming platform, including all 140 regular-season WCHA games, preseason, exhibition and non-conference games hosted by a league school, and the entire WCHA postseason tournament. FloHockey subscribers will also have access to additional college hockey coverage, including select Big Ten Conference hockey games through the company’s distribution deal with the Big Ten Network. “Hockey is one of the most intense and fast-paced games, attracting fans from all over the world,” FloSports SVP, Global Rights Acquisition David Weiss said. “As one of the most established and elite college conferences in the U.S., the WCHA lets us showcase hockey’s rising stars with in-depth coverage all year long.”
Telemundo Deportes’s En Vivo App will feature a custom emoji keyboard during the FIFA World Cup. Fans that download the app will get access to a soccer emoji keyboard in partnership with Sportsmania, allowing fans to include World Cup content in their daily conversations for the duration of the tournament. Emojis will feature countries and other animations.

ELEAGUE will also launch a custom branded website, which will house exclusive recap videos and a leaderboard of the top 5 competitors. In celebration of the partnership, The Kraken Rum will be the presenting partner for ELEAGUE’s E3 Industry Party, taking place in Los Angeles on June 11 at 8 p.m. Guests will be able to walk the Kraken black carpet, experience social photo opportunities, premium gifts, and more. The partnership kicks off with ELEAGUE’s Street Fighter V Invitational 2018, which is currently hosting group competition every Friday at 3 p.m. until June 22 live on Twitch, with featured matches airing on TBS at 11 p.m. The finals for the competition will air on Friday, July 13 live on Twitch at 6 p.m. with featured match-ups presented at 11 p.m. on TBS.
The second iteration of the GIRLGAMER Esports Festival will take place in Lisbon, Portugal on July 20-22, Esports Insider reported. The event is organized by Grow uP eSports in partnership with The Rainbow, Kaisun Energy Group, Evoloop, and Metta Sport. Sephora will sponsor. “We believe that, just as in the beauty market, gaming is no longer represented nor limited by genders,” Paula Rocha, Marketing Director for Sephora, said. “As a trendsetter brand and promoter of differentiating experiences, we are pleased to partner up with GIRLGAMER.”
This festival celebrates, supports, and celebrates women’s inclusion in esports and competitive gaming. It’ll include an esports business conference, as well as competitions in both Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and League of Legends. There will also be a public Clash Royale tournament.
