Showtime renewed Penny Dreadful for a season two, with an expanded episode order of ten. The horror thriller, averaging 4.8 million viewers since launch, is the net’s most-watched new show ever on-demand.


Will Arnett (Arrested Development) is back on Netflix, voicing a has-been sitcom star – and horse – in the animated adult comedy BoJack Horseman "who has been trying to find his way through a muddle of self-loathing, whisky and failed relationships." Amy Sedaris plays his ex in the 12-ep series, launching Friday, August 22 at 12:01a.

AT&T is capitalizing on the impending merger of Comcast and Time Warner Cable by sending mailers to prospective U-Verse customers saying, "the two cable companies with some of the poorest overall customer satisfaction scores have announced they are merging." The company told Variety the move was "one way of informing customers they have a choice of TV providers."

Logo TV added the Brooklyn Nets’ Jason Collins and Netflix series Orange Is the New Black to the list of honorees included in a one-hour event focusing on pioneers in the fight for LGBT equality. Trailblazers premieres Thursday, June 26 at 9p. 

The Paley Center for Media announced Wednesday that Mitch Barns, Andy Bird, Cesar Conde, Joe Marchese, Katherine Oliver, and Edward Skyler will join the Paley Center’s Board of Trustees. Cynthia Lopez will join as an ex-officio Board member.

Lifetime picked up four new unscripted programs: Born in the Wild, about childbirth in the wild; makeover series Girlfriend Intervention; docu-sitcom Kosher Soul, with hip-hop’s O’Neal McKnight and his fiancee, celebrity stylist Miriam Sternoff, and reality-competition show Threads, from the producers of Project Runway. "Unscripted is playing an important role in placing Lifetime in the cultural zeitgeist and introducing the network to the next generation of our viewers," said EVP and GM Rob Sharenow.

History ordered miniseries Sons of Liberty from A+E Studios and Stephen David Entertainment. The six-parter about the men who ignited the American Revolution starts production this summer. Among the cast members: Dean Norris (Breaking Bad) as Benjamin Franklin, Ben Barnes (The Chronicles of Narnia) as Sam Adams, Michael Raymond James (True Blood) as Paul Revere and Henry Thomas (E.T.) as John Adams.

Fox Television Studios struck a first-look deal with producer Elizabeth Guber Stephen, who will develop and produce cable-based projects via her Gables Media, Inc. shingle. Initial projects include USA drama series Timeline.

ABC Family is developing Rated P for Parenthood with Kelly Ripa (LIVE with Kelly and Michael) and husband Mark Consuelos‘s (Alpha House) Milojo Productions and Jamie Denbo, reports Deadline. The family comedy is based on an off-Broadway musical that ran in 2012.

ITV Studios Group finalized a joint venture agreement with Marty Adelstein to launch Tomorrow ITV Studios. The studio’s first project is NBC‘s upcoming straight-to-series drama Aquarius. While Tomorrow will produce pilots, said Adelstein, "the objective is to develop and package scripts with talent in a straight-to-series model."

Endemol UK is launching Remarkable Games, a division of Remarkable Television dedicated to creating new multiplatform game shows. James Fox, former head of creative entertainment at Remarkable TV, will lead the new effort as Games’ creative director.

Documentary series Close Encounters was renewed for a second season by Science Channel and Discovery Channel Canada. The Newroad Media production explores intriguing UFO stories.

Showtime has put in development a rehab-centered drama from Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey‘s Team Downey, and writer Gary Lennon (Orange Is the new Black), reports Deadline, set in 1983.

MY Tupelo Entertainment  and Alfred Haber Television have entered into an international distribution and co-development partnership for The Vampire Adventures. Alfred Haber will handle the international distribution for the series, exploring mythology of the undead, while seeking co-production partners for the series.



Bravo‘s Top Chef Duels premieres Wednesday, August 6 at 10p. The new franchise spin-off brings back faves for "a gastronomic battle royale of epic proportions."

R&B Divas LA returns for season two on TV One Wednesday, July 16 at 10p. Original cast members Chante Moore, Lil’ Mo, Claudette Ortiz and Michel’le will be reunited on the Thinkfactory Media production, joined by new cast members Chrisette Michele and Leela James.

Syfy premieres season one of hit New Zealand dramedy The Almighty Johnsons on Friday, July 11 at 10p. The South Pacific Pictures production follows four "typical guys" who inherit the power of Norse Gods.

The day after the start of the World Cup in Brazil, Showtime looks at a soccer sensation through a different lens with David Beckham Into the Unknown. The documentary, chronicling the retired superstar’s journey into the heart of the Amazon rainforest, premieres Friday, June 13 at 9p.

Steve Carell (The Office) guests on the season three premiere of AXS TV‘s Tom Green Live on Thursday, June 12 at 9p, following the series premiere of MOCKpocalypse at 8:30p.

ASPiRE marks Black Music Month with ASPiRE Jam Session, exclusive musical vignettes from artists including R&B singer Joe, soul’s Avery*Sunshine and rapper Mr. Sho’Nuff throughout the month of June.

Discovery Fit and Health is launching the 1996-2001 true-story series (and "real CSI") Medical Detectives Saturday, June 21 at 8p, ahead of recurring Saturday at 10p and 10:30p slots.

The lineup for the new season of Who Do You Think You Are? on TLC includes Valerie Bertinelli (Hot in Cleveland), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family), Lauren Graham (Parenthood), Kelsey Grammer (Frasier), Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) and Cynthia Nixon (Sex and the City). The series digging into celebs’ family histories bows Wednesday, July 23 at 9p.

The Africa Channel will stream live, commercial-free coverage of the memorial service for writer and civil rights activist Maya Angelou from Wake Forest University on Saturday, June 10 starting at 10a, repeated at the same time on Sunday. Angelou died May 28 at age 86.

A&E and The Hollywood Reporter are teaming for a four-part The Hollywood Reporter Roundtables series leading up to the Emmy Awards. First up: the Drama Actor Roundtable Sunday, June 8 at 8a.

The U.S. premiere of Autopsy: The Last Hours Of… airs on Reelz Wednesday, June 4 at 8p. The documentary series uses autopsy evidence to explain the sudden deaths of celebs including Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson.

Fire up the grill: Digital Live Well Network will premiere three-ep cook-off series Home Chef Showdown on Sunday, June 22 at 8p.


TCM‘s "Friday Night Spotlight" features pirate movies every week this month, starting June 6 at 8p with The Sea Hawk (1924) at 8p, The Black Swan (1942) at 10:15p, The Spanish Main (1945) at midnight and Pirates of Tripoli (1955) at 2a.

Here’s a novel way to celebrate the birth of our nation: EPIX is running a tribute to scary movie characters with an "American Psychos" marathon, starting at 7a on Friday, July 4 with You’re Next. Prime time is anchored by the TV premiere of the 2013 remake of horror classic Carrie at 8p.



After a sluggish start the upfront marketplace is heating up, reports AdAge, with NBC in particular moving "briskly" in the wake of its first place finish among A18-49 last season. Also fueling activity: its NBCU+ Powered By Comcast offering and cross-promotional strategy.

A report from video ad firm Vdopia says 62 percent of smartphone owners are comfortable with 15-30 second commercials if they can stream TV or movie content for free on their device, versus 56 percent of computer audiences and 51 percent of connected TV audiences.

Procter & Gamble is hoping to buy 70-75 percent of its digital media programmatically by year’s end, sources tell AdAge, suggesting the company "has been under investor pressure to get more from its ad budget."


Richard Kind (Spin City) has been cast in Amazon pilot Red Oaks, exec produced by Steven Soderbergh and project director David Gordon Green.


Viacom International Media Networks is extending global distribution for the Paramount Channel with the launch of the 24-hour TV film network in Romania. A localized Romanian version of is now available to pay TV subscribers of digital and satellite basic packages.

Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen has been renewed on 14 CBS owned and operated stations, with a firm pickup for seasons nine and ten. The daily comedy talker from Entertainment Studios, Inc. is cleared in 92 percent of U.S. households.

New NBC medical drama The Night Shift was just .1 off its premiere last Tuesday, according to Nielsen. ABC‘s Celebrity Wife Swap jumped three tenths, to 1.5/5, for its season finale, while the premiere of CW social experiment Famous in 12 drew a scant .2/1 in the demo.

CBS Television‘s Judge Judy was the number one syndicated show in the May sweep, with a 7.3 HH rating – up 9 percent versus May 2013 for Her Honor’s best May sweep showing in six years.  Dr. Phil won the talk show race for the 8th sweep in a row, with 3.4, up 13 percent.

DIY Network achieved its highest May standard Prime average audience ever among P25-54, garnering 88,000 impressions. The network also delivered its largest monthly average audience ever for the weekend daypart, averaging 123,000 P25-54 impressions.

NBC’s Night Shift and ABC’s Celebrity Wife Swap split the victory at 10p with 1.5/5.
