NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

After the success of teen series The 4 to 9ers on Hulu, Subway and Content & Co. are back with another offering called Summer with Cimorelli. In a partnership with multi-channel network AwesomenessTV, the new scripted comedy follows the six-sister acapella group who’ve already attracted more than 2.6 million subscribers on YouTube. The first episode was released yesterday on AwesomenessTV and the sister’s YT channel.

Emmy award-winning soap actress Martha Byrne (As the World Turns) will star in a new web series called Weight. The show will be directed by Frederick King Keller (24) and produced by Daryn Strauss, the writer behind web series Downsized. It will go into production this summer.

Multi-channel network The Whistle acquired The Lacrosse Network yesterday. The new sports network will add another 210,000 subscribers, and 2.3 million monthly video views to The Whistle’s current five million subs and 600 million views. The MCN will work with TLN’s Los Angeles-based team to develop and promote content on its YouTube channel, website and mobile apps. "Beyond a boost in audience and content expansion, the acquisition gives us studio space and a physical presence in Los Angeles for our creative partners and athletes," Whistle EVP Brian Selander told Cynopsis. The MCN has studios in Dallas and New York, and has partnerships with MLB Advanced Media, NFL, PGA Tour, and NASCAR, among others.

CONTENT MEDIA

On June 6, movie-streaming network Scream Factory will present a live web screening of Assault on Precinct 13 as part of its Summer of Fear Drive-In series. The program will run over three consecutive Fridays this month, following with Night of the Demons on June 13 and Witchboard on June 20. All the films can be seen at www.summeroffear.com and Scream Factory’s YouTube channel.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Microsoft is significantly pumping up the available apps on its Xbox One and Xbox 360 by 25 percent or 45 apps, bringing the console’s total to 225. The new apps will include Twitter, Vine, HBO Go, Showtime Anytime, Comedy Central and Major League Gaming. Twitter will be integrated in a major way; users will be able to see trending shows and tweets related to series in real-time on the Xbox One’s TV listing platform, the OneGuide.

Mobile game Temple Run has now joined the ranks of Rovio‘s Angry Birds after hitting one billion downloads this week. USA Today reports that the creators behind the game, Imangi Studios, said players "ran" 50 trillion meters and played 32 billion games since its 2008 launch.

Global ad management company Sizmek Inc. introduced a new weather targeting pre-bid buying platform called Peer39. Expanding on geographically-based weather targeting, the new tool uses weather data qualities like temperature ranges, current conditions and pollen counts to help agencies better connect with customers. "Given the effect weather has on consumers’ immediate plans and activity, as well as purchasing decisions, properly aligning ad creative to current weather conditions is an especially powerful and relevant way to target audiences," Sizmek VP of Product Strategy Alex White said.

Mobile video viewing increased 57 percent from the same time last year with online video viewing up 43 percent (or 35 billion views overall), according to a new Adobe Digital Index study. The New York Times reports the research also highlighted the major growth in authenticated TV Everywhere viewing year over year, which rose a whopping 246 percent or to one in five households using TV network’s platforms. Additionally, viewing TV on game consoles or OTT devices also hit significant numbers, increasing by 123 percent from last year.
