TODAY’S CODEBREAKER

Throwback Thursday: Throwback Thursday is a trend on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, where users repost older photos with the hashtag #ThrowbackThursday or #TBT. As you might have guessed, Throwback Thursday posts are generally seen on Thursdays.

TOP NEWS

Vimeo announced some new interactive video tools geared toward mobile audiences. Subscribers with Vimeo Business accounts will now be able to make use of cards and end screens – links that can be placed in videos, allowing viewers to move to custom sites by clicking. (Vimeo is taking a page from YouTube, where cards and end-screens were already commonly used.)  In a blog post, Vimeo advises that the new tools can be used for “ linking to your website, merch pages, [and] crowdfunding campaigns[.]” The Vimeo Business subscription tier, which costs $50 per month, launched last year.

VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY

The Samsung Gear VR headset is getting a little more interactive. Oculus (which develops the headset’s software) has added support for a Google Chromecast streaming adapter. The update lets Gear VR users stream directly to TV sets, enabling others in the room to view their VR experiences in experiences in real-time. This is suddenly a new trend in mobile VR: Last month, Google announced plans to bring similar functionality to its Daydream headset.

PLATFORMS, APPS + DEVICES

Nuvyyo is set to release a revamped version of Tablo, its flagship DVR for cord-cutters. The new version comes equipped with 64 GB of internal on-board storage, allowing users to start recordings without the need for an external hard drive. It also comes in a smaller housing, taking up less space than the previous version. The device goes on sale next week.

Live-streaming service Live.me has made some new updates to its platform. Users can now record short Vine-like video clips. Called Shorts, the video feature lets users record or import videos that are between 7 and 17 seconds long; the videos can be edited with stickers, filters, text, and voice modifiers. Meanwhile, Live.me also introduced scannable QR codes on users profiles, allowing people to find other users more easily.

Apple has gotten to work on a new internet-connected smart speaker that will compete with Amazon’s Echo and Google Home, according to a report from Bloomberg. The speaker reportedly might be unveiled at the company’s WWDC conference, which runs next week. Still, Bloomberg’s sources say the device won’t be ready to ship until later in the year. Apple hasn’t publicly commented on the story.

SOCIAL MEDIA

As many publications have reported, Facebook is getting ready to unveil a slate of original TV-like content – likely this month. And as Nathan McAlone just wrote in Business Insider, those plans bring up an important question: What does this mean for Facebook’s relationship with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, who sits on the company’s board? Yesterday, Hastings said that he doesn’t think Facebook’s content goals are creating a big conflict yet. According to Reuters, the social giant is ready to pay as much as $250,000 per episode for longer-form content. That’s not actually a lot of money by TV production standards, and it’s peanuts compared to the millions of dollars that Netflix spends on episodes of its original shows. In other words, Netflix and Facebook likely won’t be competing – or as Hastings put it, “ We’re not bidding on the same shows.”

PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS

The free video service Pluto TV has inked a deal with indie film distributor Gravitas Ventures. Under the pact, Pluto TV will launch a dedicated “Gravitas Movies” channel, which will feature the distributor’s entire catalog of titles – more than 2,000 in total. All told, Pluto TV has over 100 channels. The Gravitas deal was first reported by Variety.

OTT + SVOD

China’s online video sector – dominated by Baidu’s iQIYI, Alibaba’s Youku Tudou, and Tencent’s Tencent Video – has so far seen only net losses. But according to a new report from JP Morgan, that may change within the next few years. The investment bank says that China’s video industry might break even by 2019, largely due to a surge in subscriptions. JP Morgan says that of the roughly 520 million Chinese video consumers, only 60 million are paid subscribers. But JP Morgan points out that the three services have been shifting from a content-acquisition heavy model to one that’s based on producing and distributing original content. The report suggests that such investments will likely drive growth, ultimately paving the way for a shift from an ad-supported business model to a largely subscription-driven one.

Tweet of the week: @Steigerwald4: I can’t believe Scott Dixon walked away from that crash
Canvs , the emotion analytics company, analyzed tweets about TV and streaming programming from May 24-30 using Twitter data from Nielsen. Insights from the 1,717,163 tweets expressing a specific Emotional Reaction (ER) include:
– Viewers thought Michael Scofield (portrayed by Wentworth Miller), the main character on Fox’s Prison Break, was totally brilliant during the finale, with many praising him as a strategic genius.
– People went nuts when Scott Dixon crashed during the Indianapolis 500 on ABC, proclaiming how lucky he was to escape unscathed given how crazy the crash was.
– Despite losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers and being knocked out of the NBA playoffs during a game that was broadcast on TNT, the Boston Celtics received thousands of congratulatory messages for a season well done.
– Tops in funny ERs (outside of sports): Empire on Fox, where Cookie (portrayed by Taraji P. Henson) had viewers LOLing with some well-placed side-eye.
