06/29/22: The PGA TOUR and DP World Tour deepened their alliance

The DP World Tour and the PGA TOUR are deepening their ties, locking in a new 13-year operational joint venture partnership. The partnership will run through to 2035, with the PGA TOUR increasing its existing stake in European Tour Productions from 15 percent to 40 percent, while leveraging the DP World Tour’s international credentials and global footprint to continue to coordinate a worldwide schedule. Meanwhile, the DP World Tour will guarantee growth in annual prize funds to its membership for the next five years. In addition, from 2023, the leading ten players on the end of season DP World Tour Rankings [in addition to those already exempt] will earn PGA TOUR cards for the following season and the DP World Tour will work closely on the development and implementation of the new international events announced by PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan last week.

PROGRAMMING

The 2022 Stanley Cup Final on ABC and ESPN+ wrapped up on Sunday night with the Colorado Avalanche hoisting the Stanley Cup for the first time since 2001, winning the series 4-2. This season’s Stanley Cup Final averaged 4.6 million viewers and reached an average of 1.8 million people 18-49 – up 84% and 99%, respectively over versus 2021’s Stanley Cup Final average. The 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs across ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC averaged more than 1.6 million viewers, rising 60% versus all 2021 playoffs across cable and broadcast. Sunday’s Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final averaged 5.8 million viewers and reached an average of 2.2 million people 18-49. The final game of the series was the most-viewed telecast of the day among people 18-49, and viewership peaked in the third period with 6.9 million viewers.

Amazon continues to lock in talent for Prime Video’s Thursday Night Football broadcast team, announcing the addition of Charissa Thompson as host of its NFL pregame, halftime, and postgame coverage. Thompson will anchor Prime Video’s wraparound coverage alongside Tony Gonzalez, Richard Sherman, and Ryan Fitzpatrick, live and on-site at each TNF matchup throughout the season. Thompson will also retain her FOX NFL KICKOFF hosting duties each Sunday. In addition, NFL.com reports that former All-Pro corner Aqib Talib will join Amazon as a studio analyst.

The ACC is shedding divisions, becoming the latest conference to move to a new scheduling format, with 2022 serving as the final year of the Atlantic and Coastal divisions. Starting in 2023, the league will move to a 3-5-5 format, in which each team has three permanent rivalry games played annually, with the other 10 opponents rotating on an every-other-year basis. “The future ACC football scheduling model provides significant enhancements for our schools and conference, with the most important being our student-athletes having the opportunity to play every school both home and away over a four-year period,” ACC commissioner Jim Phillips said in a statement. “We appreciate the thoughtful discussions within our membership, including the head football coaches and athletic directors. In the end, it was clear this model is in the best interest of our student-athletes, programs and fans, at this time.”

NBC Sports is pushing three weeks of wall-to-wall live and encore coverage of the 109th Tour de France on Peacock and USA Network. Daily live coverage starts July 1 at 9:30a with the Tour de France Pre-Race Show, followed by Stage 1 at 10a on the platforms. Phil Liggett will call play-by-play race action, marking the 50th time he will cover the Tour de France, with Bob Roll on-board as analyst. Steve Porino and Robbie Hunter will serve as reporters. Paul Burmeister will host daily pre-race and post-race studio coverage,

MLB Sunday Leadoff’s presentation of the Royals/Tigers on Sunday at noon ET on Peacock will offer a broadcast without any commentators in the booth. Ahmed Fareed, Craig Monroe and Britney Eurton will take fans around Detroit’s Comerica Park throughout the game, providing viewers “with a tour of the ballpark, unique viewpoints, conversations with special guests, and more.” “This is another way to take you out to the ball game and give the fans a unique experience,” said Sam Flood, NBC Sports Production Executive Producer & President. “We’re going to be fans of the game, taking you to different parts of the ballpark and engaging in a way that fans watch the game in the stadium.”

ESPN revealed nominees for The 2022 ESPYS, which will broadcast live on July 20 at 8p on ABC from Los Angeles. The complete list of 2022 nominees can be viewed here.

AEG will sell worldwide broadcast media rights to the Soccer Champions Tour, which spans July 22-30 and will see Real Madrid CF, FC Barcelona, Juventus, Club América and Club Deportivo Guadalajara compete in top-tier matches in the span of only nine days across the western United States. AEG Global Partnerships is also selling sponsorship for the Soccer Champions Tour and individual matches.

FloSports announced a five-year partnership renewal with Amaury Sport Organisation to offer live and on-demand coverage of the Tour de France exclusively in Canada from 2024 through 2028.

ESPN saw viewership for the 2022 NBA Draft Presented By State Farm on June 23 grow 33% over last year, according to Nielsen. The first round across ABC and ESPN averaged nearly four million viewers (3,988,000). Overall, the 2022 NBA Draft averaged 3,047,000 viewers for both rounds (round two aired on ESPN only).

The NBA, the National Basketball Players Association, and Niantic, the makers of Pokémon GO, partnered up to create NBA All-World. The mobile game will launch globally during the 2022-2023 NBA season as an officially licensed, geolocation, 1-on-1 basketball game where players compete to and visit Drop Zones to acquire collectible sneakers, jerseys, and more to outfit their roster.

The All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club renewed its broadcast partnership for The Championships, Wimbledon with Sport 24, the IMG-owned live sports channel for the airline and cruise line industries, for a further three years until 2024. “On the occasion of Sport 24’s 10th anniversary, we are delighted to be renewing our partnership for a further three years to 2024,” said Gus Henderson, Commercial Director at the All England Club. “Being able to bring Wimbledon to more people around the world more of the time is a core pillar of our commercial and marketing strategy, and, alongside our broadcast partners, the Sport 24 output plays an important role in delivering on that ambition.”

The LEC Summer Finals will hit Malmö, Sweden from Sept. 10-11. JMI Sports announced the appointment of Laila Brock as Vice President, Business Development. In this newly created role, Brock will direct JMI Sports’ industry outreach and relationship development throughout the collegiate and professional marketplace to drive revenue through property acquisitions, events and strategic initiatives that cultivate new prospects.
