At the 49th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards held Friday, “General Hospital” took home the most trophies with five, including Outstanding Daytime Drama. Mishael Morgan became the first Black actress to win Outstanding Lead Performance in a Daytime Drama Series, for her role on “The Young and the Restless.”

Google has responded to the Supreme Court decision to roll back Roe v. Wade by allowing employee where abortion is illegal to relocate without explanation. The company also added travel benefits to employees for out-of-state medical procedures that are not available where an employee lives and works. “Equity is extraordinarily important to us as a company, and we share concerns about the impact this ruling will have on people’s health, lives and careers,” wrote Google Chief People officer Fiona Cicconi in an email. “We will keep working to make information on reproductive healthcare accessible across our products and continue our work to protect user privacy.”

Google is not the only media/tech company to expand travel assistanceor already offers it – to employees who would need to travel out of state for a medical procedure. Others include Apple, Comcast/NBCU, Disney, Microsoft, Meta, Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery.

The percentage of mobile users interested in using streaming video apps rose from 50% to 66.9% from October 2021 to May 2022, according to Brag Brand Insights. In category interest, app awareness and install intent, PlutoTV and Hulu led the back, while YouTube and Amazon Prime had the edge in brand favorability.

Charter Communications was ordered to pay $337.5 million in compensatory damages for the murder of an 83-year-old customer by one of its service technicians. A jury decided Charter was 90% responsible for the stabbing because a cursory look at the background of the technician, Roy Holden, would have revealed a troubling background. “The responsibility for this horrible act rests solely with Mr. Holden, and we are grateful he is in prison for life,” said Charter in a statement. “While we respect the jury and the justice system, we strongly disagree with the verdict and plan to appeal.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Showtime and BET Studios are developing a pilot for “The Book of Jose,” telling the rags-to-riches story of hip hop star Joseph “Fat Joe” Cartagena. Cartagena will exec produce alongside pilot writer Jorge A Reyes (“Queen of the South”) and Kenya Barris (“black-ish”).

Chef Wolfgang Puck is partnering with Genius Brands International to create a children’s brand, “Wolfgang Puck’s Secret Chef Academy.” The animated adventure series stars Puck voicing his own character.

Joe Donaldson (“Peaky Blinders”) has launched Magic Hour Television and inked a first-look deal with All3Media International and New Pictures. The agreement calls for Donaldson to develop a slate, funded by All3, and partner with New Pictures co-founder and CEO Willow Grylls to produce scripted TV.

Francisca X. Hu (“Dynasty,” “Warrior”) has landed an overall deal with UCP to develop and produce projects on TV platforms. Hu is a graduate of the 2020 WGA Showrunner Training Program.

STREAMING

Distribution of Crackle Plus AVOD streaming services has increased to 85 touchpoints, ahead of internal plans, with a goal of reaching 90 in 2022. The services, including Crackle, Popcornflix and the recently launched Chicken Soup for the Soul, are available as both linear and video-on-demand offerings. The recent growth in touchpoints has been partially driven by the company’s acquisition of 1091 Pictures and their streaming channels SurfNow TV, BlackPix, Unidentified and EchoBoom. “Our goal is to make our free entertainment content available to everyone on every possible platform, whether it’s streaming devices, game consoles, connected TVs or our growing stable of linear FAST channels,” said Philippe Guelton, President of Crackle Plus. “As we continue to grow the number of distribution touchpoints, our goal is to make it that much easier for consumers to find the content they’re looking for in the most seamless way possible.”

Nickelodeon’s “Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Ghost Island,” the third chapter of the anthology miniseries based on the ‘90s kids’ cult classic, will debut with a two-hour episode on Saturday, July 30, at 7p, with the remaining episodes airing Saturday, August 6, and August 13.
