|Combate Global has a new US English-language home, locking in an agreement with Paramount+ and CBS Sports for its MMA action. CBS Sports’ live coverage of Combate Global debuts on CBS Sports Network on June 25, with action continuing on Paramount+ exclusively from July 9 through the remainder of the 2021 Combate Global schedule. Paramount+ will now offer 30 live events annually in 2022 and 2023. In addition, CBS Sports Network will complement Combate coverage with a weekly one-hour recap show with highlights of that week’s card.
“The addition of Combate Global’s exciting MMA action is a tremendous opportunity for Paramount+ to further expand its reach to a young and diverse fanbase,” said Jeffrey Gerttula, Executive Vice President and General Manager, CBS Sports Digital. “We believe Combate events will complement the expansive live soccer programming that is now a cornerstone of our industry-leading sports coverage on the service and deliver even more unique sports content across CBS Sports platforms.”
In ratings news, the NBA reports that the NBA Playoffs continue to surge this season, with 2021 viewership through the conference semis delivering an average of 3.5 million viewers across TNT, ESPN and ABC. That was up 39% over 2020 numbers, with two game 7s on TNT seeing the Bucks/Nets draw 6.9 million while the Hawks/76ers nab 6.2 million to rank as the most-viewed playoff games this season. In addition, global viewership of NBA League pass has grown 22% over 2020.
Around the dial, NBC Sports’ coverage of the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series’ return to Nashville and the NTT INDYCAR SERIES at Road America delivered viewership milestones on Saturday and Sunday on NBCSN. NBC Sports opened its coverage of the 2021 NASCAR season with Sunday’s race at Nashville Superspeedway and averaged a Total Audience Delivery of 2.619 million viewers, up 8% vs. the last time NBC Sports’ season coverage opened in June. Viewership was also up 22% compared to last year’s weekend Cup Series average viewership on NBCSN. Sunday’s coverage of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES REV Group Grand Prix at Road America produced a TAD of 807,000 viewers, making it the most-watched INDYCAR race on cable since Mid-Ohio in 2016. NBC Sports is off to its best-ever season of INDYCAR viewership on NBCSN, averaging a TAD of 530,000 viewers across the first three races, up 59% vs. 2020 and 38% vs. 2019.
In addition, NBC Sports reports that its coverage of the 121st U.S. Open Championship delivered the second most-watched U.S. Open in five years. Sunday’s final round coverage on NBC averaged a TAD of 5.7 million viewers, up 76% vs. 2020, marking the network’s most-watched golf telecast since the 2018 Tour Championship. Thursday-Sunday coverage across NBC and GOLF Channel averaged a TAD of 3.1 million viewers, up 43% vs. 2020 to rank as the second most-watched U.S. Open in five years only behind the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.
ESPN serves up Wimbledon coverage once again with coverage from all 18 courts starting Monday and more than 150 hours of action on TV plus more than 500 matches from London available for fans between ESPN+ and ESPN3 on the ESPN app. The first five weekdays sees ESPN begin at 6a for daylong coverage (transitioning to ESPN2 at 11:30a on Monday, Tuesday and Friday).
Tennis Channel’s coverage of Wimbledon begins Monday at 4:30p as the 13th season of Tennis Channel’s Wimbledon Primetime will again feature daily matches, highlights, and special reports. The typical daily schedule offers two editions, one at 4:30p and a second at 8:30p. Martina Navratilova and Lindsay Davenport are back as Tennis Channel analysts with Jim Courier. Announcers Ted Robinson, Steve Weissman and Alex Faust will handle play-by-play responsibilities.
NBC Sports begins three weeks of wall-to-wall live and encore coverage of the 108th Tour de France on NBC, NBCSN and Peacock with daily live coverage of the race starting at 6a on Saturday on NBCSN with the Tour de France Pre-Race Show, followed by Stage 1 at 6:30a. Coverage continues throughout each day of the 21-stage event, beginning on weekdays with the Tour de France Pre-Race Show, followed by live race coverage. Coverage culminates with the final stage on Sunday, July 18, live at 10:30a on NBCSN and Peacock. The 2021 Tour de France will cover a total distance of 2,121 miles, beginning in Brest, France.

Tongues were wagging after the Supreme Court unanimously affirmed a ruling Monday that allows for a change in how college athletes can be compensated. Justice Neil Gorsuch penned the court’s opinion, which upheld a district court judge’s decision that the NCAA was violating antitrust law by placing limits on the education-related benefits that schools can provide to athletes. The decision allows schools to provide their athletes with unlimited compensation as long as it is some way connected to their education. “Even though the decision does not directly address name, image and likeness, the NCAA remains committed to supporting NIL benefits for student-athletes,” NCAA president Mark Emmert said in a statement, per ESPN. “Additionally, we remain committed to working with Congress to chart a path forward, which is a point the Supreme Court expressly stated in its ruling.”
