Add Magna to the forecasters revising advertising estimates downward for 2023. The IPG Mediabrand division’s update predicts US growth of 2.5%, versus an estimate of 3.4% in March. “Advertising spending slowed down to a halt in the first quarter of 2023 (+1.5% globally, flat in most Western markets) due to economic uncertainty and the lack of cyclical drivers,” said Magna EVP-Global Market Research Vincent Létang. “There are, however, some drivers mitigating the impact of economic slowdown: Ecommerce and Retail Media bringing more marketing dollars into digital advertising formats, and the counter-cyclical dynamic of some large industry verticals (Retail, Auto, Travel).”

Paramount+ has renewed “School Spirits” for season two. The YA drama, based on the upcoming graphic novel by Nate Trinrud, stars Peyton List as a teen stuck in the afterlife.

NBCUniversal inked a deal with Group Black to be the exclusive ad sales platform for Black-led comedies, dramas and films on Peacock. NBCU has curated a collection of Black-led and diverse content through Black Excellence 365 for exclusive marketing and advertising sales by Group Black.

Netflix has adjusted its method for reporting streaming viewership,
going from hours viewed to hours viewed divided by total runtime when calculating its top ten ranking. The change means a fairer shake for shows like “Queen Charlotte,” which had short run times. The streamer is also expanding its measurement window from 28 days to 91 days.

Total TV usage dipped 4.4% in May versus April, while streaming usage increased 2.5% during the same period, according to Nielsen’s The Gauge report. Streaming’s share of overall TV usage rose from 34% to 36.4% for the month, with the biggest gainers Netflix (up 9.2%) and Prime Video (up 5.1%).

Omnicom struck a strategic collaboration with Google Cloud
that offers the group unique access to the Vertex AI platform, including foundation models such as PaLM 2 and Imagen, which can be applied to various use cases in the fields of creativity, summarization of knowledge, discoverability, and automation. The models will be integrated into Omnicom’s open operating system, Omni, enabling agency and client teams to accelerate the content development process for marketing campaigns.

Gannett is suing Google, claiming the company violates federal antitrust laws. “Google controls how publishers sell their ad slots, and it forces publishers to sell growing shares of that ad space to Google at depressed prices,” says the complaint. “The result is dramatically less revenue for publishers and Google’s ad-tech rivals, while Google enjoys exorbitant monopoly profits.” Gannett publishes over 200 daily newspapers, including USA Today.

Reels and AI were the hot topics for Meta at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. The company said it is expanding ads on Instagram Reels to advertisers via image ads directly on Reels content, and bringing app promotional ads to Facebook and Instagram Reels. Talk about AI was more exploratory than newsworthy. “We think people will want to interact with lots of different AIs,” said the company. “And we believe it’s important to have a diverse array of AI Assistants to represent people, creators, and businesses’ interests.”

Nielsen intends to make its Nielsen ONE audience measurement data available
as an input to EDO’s predictive outcomes solution for mutual clients, while EDO will make its outcomes measurement data available as an input of Nielsen’s Media Impact planning software. “For a century now, Nielsen has provided great value to the industry with measurement data made available through our own products,” said Deirdre Thomas, Chief Product Officer at Nielsen. “With EDO, we are taking the first step towards extending that same value beyond our own tools and allowing the power of our audience measurement to be integrated alongside other datasets and enhance other applications. We believe this interoperability will drive the next era of impactful, responsive media and advertising planning.”

Allen Media Group and VideoAmp inked a ten-year currency agreement, making VideoAmp AMG’s primary and preferred currency. “Reliable big data measurement is much needed and will save the industry. This is something we have been waiting on for a long time – a company to come along and break the mold, to take us to the next level and to measure our channels properly,” said Byron Allen, Founder/Chairman/CEO of AMG. “For Allen Media Group, that solution is VideoAmp.”

National CineMedia struck a deal with Adelaide, focused on attention-based media measurement, bringing Adelaide’s attention transaction metric to the cinema advertising industry. “Eye-tracking studies have shown that cinema media captures attention at rates that far exceed other paid media channels. We’re proud to bring AU measurement to NCM’s exceptional video platform,” said Marc Guldimann, Adelaide CEO. Adelaide’s AU is an omnichannel media quality metric representing a placement’s probability of attention and subsequent impact, generated by a machine learning algorithm trained to proxy full-funnel outcomes from awareness to sales.

LG Ad Solutions announced a strategic partnership
with customer intelligence company, Acxiom. “CTV advertisers can now reach their desired audience more accurately and efficiently, and at scale,” said Alistair Sutcliffe, Head of Product at LG Ad Solutions. “This game-changing collaboration combines LG Ad Solutions’ Automatic Content Recognition viewership data with Acxiom’s broad cross-industry audiences taxonomy, giving advertisers from all sectors a new level of incremental reach based on exceptionally high match rates without compromising flexibility or scale.”

The longer an ad is viewed on a page, the lower the carbon emissions,
according to Attention x Sustainability: The Benefits of a Smaller Carbon Footprint in Media, conducted by MAGNA’s Media Trials in conjunction with Oracle. The study analyzed over one billion impressions across 55 countries through live campaign tracking and stress-tested findings by using AI-based, predictive eye tracking on approximately 350 display ads that appeared on 100 US websites. The resulting analysis proved that a spot that was in view for 10 seconds produced 64%less carbon emissions than a spot with a five-second, in-view time. The correlation between in-view time and carbon emissions is likely related to total ad load on each page, as the more ads that load, the greater the emissions generated. In turn, competing ads will divide viewers’ attention. Eliminating impressions that do not comply with the Media Ratings Council standards, such as video and display ads that run below the page break and are out of view, which advertisers do not pay for anyway, will reduce six percent of carbon emissions generated by online advertising.

A new short film headed to Lifetime raises awareness
among parents of 16-23 year-olds about the potential dangers of meningitis B. The film, featuring former child star Soleil Moon Frye and Lifetime movie veteran Melissa Joan Hart, is sponsored by GSK as part of the Ask2BSure campaign. “I Never Thought to Ask: A Mom’s Quest for Answers,” airs Sunday, June 25 at 12 noon, and is available on Lifetime digital.

“Destination NBA: A G League Odyssey,” a documentary produced by Religion of Sports and Spotify’s The Ringer, will premiere August 8 on Prime Video. The film, featuring projected NBA Draft lottery pick and G League Ignite star Scoot Henderson, is the latest addition to the Prime membership.

“Far Haven” premieres on Cowboy Way channel on September 3 at 8p. The 1887-set western from Imagicomm Entertainment stars Bailey Chase, Bruce Boxleitner, A Martinez, and Martin Kove.

ABC News Live will celebrate Pride Month on Sunday, June 25, with “Pride Across America,” a streaming event that features five hours of live coverage from three of the nation’s biggest pride marches. In partnership with Hulu and ABC Owned Television Stations WABC (New York), WLS (Chicago) and KGO (San Francisco), “Pride Across America” will begin 11a with a one-hour pre-show, followed by coverage of the pride marches.

Sixty-seven percent of Gen Z prefer consuming sports content on their phones,
versus 54% of millennials and 23% of Gen X, according to research commissioned by Vizrt. Thirty-seven percent of Gen Z also said they opt for mobile phone viewing to access all their content via mobile devices due to accessibility (54%), convenience (46%), and the ability to multitask (43%). Viewers are also increasingly watching on digital channels, with 59% of respondents, and 74% of Gen Z, sharing that they use social media to catch up on sports.

Telemundo, Spanish-language home of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™, unveiled its broadcast lineup and announced teams.
