Daytime Emmy winners at the 49th Annual Creative Arts & Lifestyle ceremony on Saturday included “Judy Justice” for courtroom show; “Barefoot Contessa: Modern Comfort Food” for culinary series; Penguin Town” for nature program; and “Sparking Joy with Marie Kondo” for lifestyle series. All told, syndicated shows took ten awards, Netflix nabbed nine, and CBS and PBS each took three. In 2021, NATAS and the Television Academy announced plans to realign the Daytime and Primetime Emmy Awards to be organized by content genre, as opposed to program airtime. In addition, 2022 will mark the first annual Children’s & Family Emmy Awards, with relevant categories separating from the Daytime Emmys into their own competition and ceremony. Additional Daytime Emmys will be presented on a show broadcast on CBS on June 24.
Roku is teaming with Walmart on a shoppable ad pilot program aiming to make TV streaming “the next e-commerce shopping destination.” Walmart will be the exclusive retailer to enable streamers to purchase featured products fulfilled by Walmart directly on Roku. The experience offers product discovery with seamless checkout, enabling purchase directly at the time of inspiration. “We’re working to connect with customers where they are already spending time, shortening the distance from discovery and inspiration to purchase,” said William White, CMO, Walmart. “No one has cracked the code around video shoppability. By working with Roku, we’re the first to market retailer to bring customers a new shoppable experience and seamless checkout on the largest screen in their homes – their TV.”
Facebook is being sued for allegedly collecting and monetizing medical data from hospital web sites. “Facebook knows (or should have known) that its pixel tracking tool is being improperly used on hospital websites resulting in the wrongful, contemporaneous, re-direction to Facebook of patient communications,” charged a Maryland resident and MedStar Health patient in a class-action complaint. The plaintiff alleges Facebook also allowed advertisers to target users based on specific health conditions.
The deaths of actors Raymundo Garduno Cruz and Juan Francisco Aguilar was a “tragic accident,” said Netflix. The men, part of a group working on the streamers’ series “The Chosen One,” were riding in a van to a local airport when it crashed and flipped. Said the series’ production company, “Redrum has been cooperating with local authorities and initial reports and accounts from witnesses indicate that all safety protocols were in place and this was an unfortunate accident.”
Netflix is expected to announce a new round of layoffs this week, as the company’s stock sits at about $175 per share versus a 52-week high of over $700. The number of reductions should be around the same as layoffs of 150 employees, plus part-time workers, last month, according to Variety.
May 2022 media spend was relatively flat year-over-year, but it was the second-highest spend month during year-to-date 2022 and the best May on record (since 2017), according to Standard Media Index. Digital momentum continued, with a 56% share of ad dollars. In linear, gains in sports (up 15%) weren’t enough to compensate for declines across entertainment (down 14%) and news (down 4%). OOH saw the biggest percentage of growth, driven by entertainment & media (up 55%) and pharma (up 66%).
Former Spice Girl Mel B – aka Scary Spice – is joining the judging panel for season two of Paramount+ drag queen singing competition “Queen of the Universe.” She takes the spot held by Leona Lewis on season one.
After eleven years of bargaining and 15 years without receiving a cost-of-living increase, IATSE members at stations in New Jersey, New York and Washington, D.C. ratified a new three-year contract. The contract, which covers behind-the-scenes news crews and broadcast television technicians, will “bring much-needed relief to workers who have been grappling with rising inflation while putting themselves in harm’s way to deliver breaking news to the New York and Washington D.C. metros,” said the union. The deal includes 12% wage increases in the first year, 2% increases in the second and third years, matching 401(k) contributions and maintained premium pay for per-diem workers.
Hallmark Channel has renewed “When Calls the Heart” for season ten. Its last go-round, the drama ranked as this year’s most-watched original scripted series on ad-supported cable in homes (2.4 million), and among women 18+ (2.2 million) and total viewers (2.9 million). Lindsay Sturman (“Supergirl”) will take over as showrunner.
Chris Daniels is joining Sinclair Broadcast Group’s “Spotlight on America” investigative team on August 1. Daniels was most recently Chief Reporter at King TV. The investigative team produces original accountability and enterprise reports and specials that air across 70+ ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CW and MyNet stations nationwide, as well as on Sinclair’s The National Desk.
“Yellowstone” origin story “1932” has a new name: “1923.” The series, starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, is set to premiere on Paramount+ in December.3

Apple TV+ ordered eight-episode thriller “Criminal Record,” starring Peter Capaldi (“Doctor Who”) and Cush Jumbo (“The Good Fight”) as detectives in a tug of war over a historic murder conviction. From Paul Rutman (“Vera,” “Indian Summers”), the series is currently in production in London and is produced for Apple TV+ by Tod Productions and STV Studios.
Will Forte (“The Last Man on Earth”) will star in the first Netflix scripted series from Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground. Darkly comic thriller “Bodkin” (wt), created by Jez Scharf (“Mister Biscuits”), centers on a group of podcasters who discover a story bigger than they imagined in a coastal Irish town.
Love Nature has greenlit “Evolution Earth,” in co-production with PBS and ARTE. The five-part natural history series produced by PASSION Planet reveals how wildlife at the front lines of climate change are adapting to their environments.
Spencer Hudnut, “SEAL Team” showrunner and EP, has inked a new overall deal with the show’s CBS Studios. “SEAL Team,” moved from CBS to Paramount+ last year, ranks among the streamer’s most-watched dramas.

HGTV’s mother/daughter renovation series “Good Bones” returns for a new season Tuesday, July 12 at 9p. For the first time ever, the pair will tackle a commercial renovation, for a fellow female entrepreneur who is moving her bridal shop to a bigger space.
“The Rehearsal,” starring Nathan Fielder (“Nathan For You”), kicks off Friday, July 15 on HBO. In the comedy, Fielder allows ordinary people to prepare for life’s biggest moments by “rehearsing” them in carefully crafted simulations of his own design. Fielder also executive produces, writes and directs the six-parter.
