IN THE NEWS
CBS Television Distribution is launching DABL, a multiplatform, ad-supported lifestyle network, on September 9. The diginet will feature project-based, feel-good content around cooking, home renovation, design, DIY, pets and travel, with an initial lineup of programming from the libraries of lifestyle experts including Martha Stewart and Emeril Lagasse, among others. “The strength of our distribution and ad sales teams, combined with our O&O station group and the depth of our library, provides us with a lot of opportunities to mine in the digital landscape,” said Steve LoCascio, Chief Operating and Financial Officer of CBS Global Distribution Group. “We chose DABL as our first foray into the space because we see a huge upside in the marketplace for lifestyle programming.” Anchored by the CBS Television Stations group, DABL is cleared in over 70% of the country, including all of the top 10 markets and 23 of the top 25 markets.
NBC News, MSNBC and Noticias Telemundo will provide students with support and resources for content creation and offer best practices for reporting news in the Student Journalism Project, a collaboration with Instagram. In addition, all three publishers will debut the students’ posts on their Instagram IGTV accounts. “We are excited to partner with Instagram on a project that enables us to invest in Hispanic students, offer our audiences a different way to experience the debates, and continue to fulfill our mission to be the choice and voice for Latinos,” said Romina Rosado, SVP, Digital Media & Emerging Businesses NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises. “The Latino vote will be crucial in the 2020 election, and with Hispanics’ median age a full 15 years lower than the non-Hispanic, all campaigns need to pay attention to the young Hispanic demographic.”
Drug manufacturers Merck, Eli Lilly and Amgen are suing the Trump administration over a rule that would force them to disclose the list prices of drugs that cost over $35/month in TV advertisements. The rule, set to take effect on July 9, is an attempt to lower the price of drugs. “We believe the new requirements may cause patients to decide not to seek treatment because of their perception that they cannot afford their medications, when in fact many patients do not pay anything near list price,” said Merck in a statement. The Association of National Advertisers was also listed as a plaintiff.
Comcast launched a feature that gives people with physical disabilities like spinal cord injuries or ALS the ability to navigate their television using only their eyes. Xfinity X1 eye control, a web-based remote for tablets and computers, pairs with an existing eye gaze system and allows viewers to change the channel, set a recording, search for a show and more. “Changing the channel on a TV is something most of us take for granted but until now, it was a near-impossible task for millions of viewers,” said Tom Wlodkowski, VP Accessibility at Comcast. “When you make a product more inclusive you create a better experience for everyone and we’re hoping our new X1 feature makes a real difference in the lives of our customers.”
Alice Sylvester, Partner, Sequent Partners, and Gian Fulgoni, co-founder and former Chairman of Comscore, have been selected as the 2019 inductees into the Market Research Council Hall of Fame. “At a time when Market Research as a discipline is undergoing significant change as it adapts to big data and AI-fueled analytics, there are perhaps no better two examples of the innovation and impact that practitioners in our field have had on advertising and marketing broadly than Alice and Gian,” said Jim Spaeth, President of the MRC.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Showtime picked up On Becoming a God in Central Florida, a one-hour series starring Kirsten Dunst (Fargo) set to debut Sunday, August 25 at 10p. Tyra Banks (America’s Next Top Model) will star in and EP Beauty, a docu-series for upcoming short-form video platform Quibi. “Our docu-series aims to expand and redefine the definition of beauty as we know it, challenging why we accept certain beauty parameters and reject others, and examining the beliefs behind those judgments,” said Banks.
MGM Television is developing a series inspired by the 1986 Rodney Dangerfield comedy Back to School – only it’s for real. “I am so excited to take the premise of one of my favorite films into the unscripted world,” said President of Unscripted Television, Barry Poznick. “Rodney was a comedic genius and his spirit is very much in the DNA of our show’s approach to a dual fish-out-of-water comedic format for audiences to experience along with our parents and kids.” The MGM project shows parents who missed out on their college years sharing classrooms with their (likely mortified) children. MGM TV chairman Mark Burnett will EP with Poznick and Dangerfield’s widow, Joan Dangerfield.

In HGTV’s Supersize My Pool, Mario Lopez surprises families with pool makeovers. What exactly does Lopez’s job entail? “Mario plays the dual role of Super Mario & Willy Wonka,” Juma Entertainment president and series EP Robert Horowitz tells Cynopsis. “He engages with families from the moment he sees their rundown pool and yard, then listens to their wish list, before creating and putting his Supersize pool plan in motion. As for the backyard transformation in each half-hour, it’s pretty amazing.” Series launches Saturday, July 6 at 9p.

TECH TALK
Tru Optik announced at Cannes Lions the launch of the Tru Optik Political Data Cloud, enabling political advertisers to use both OTT and streaming audio to target specific voter groups on a local, state or national level across factors like party affiliation, past voting behavior and issue orientation. “The reality is consumers no longer only utilize traditional TV and radio and instead are viewing CTV/OTT and streaming audio more than ever,” Andre Swanston, CEO of Tru Optik, tells Cynopsis. “From the anticipated $10 billion or more being spent on advertising for the 2020 U.S. election cycle, we project $2.9 billion from digital, a range of $500 to $720 million from OTT/CTV and a range of $70 to $90 million from streaming audio. These numbers in ad spend demonstrate that in order to succeed, candidates will need to leverage these new avenues of voter streaming consumption as they provide much more precise targeting power and exceptional reach to desired audiences.” Political data can be combined with behavioral, demographic and interest-based information, to create custom voter segments actionable across over 80 million U.S. homes through leading publishers and ad tech platforms.

The Lab will be a new construction 20,000 square foot facility located in the Chelsea neighborhood, featuring an immersive zone for showcasing experiences visible to the public, flexible indoor and outdoor event spaces, dedicated R&D environments and an open and collaborative modern work space. “The Lab is more than a technology incubator, but also a dream factory for us to create the wonderment that fans have come to love and expect from WarnerMedia,” said Jesse Redniss, GM, WarnerMedia Innovation Lab.

China’s smartphone maker Huawei is looking at a revenue drop of $30 billion below forecast over the next two years following trade restrictions from the US, founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei said on Monday. “We didn’t expect the US to attack Huawei with such intense and determined effort,” he said during a panel discussion at the company. “We are not only banned from providing targeted components but also from joining a lot of international organizations, collaborating with many universities, using anything with American components or even connecting to networks that use American parts.” Still, he added that after a period of adjustment, Hauwei “will grow stronger.”
