06/15/22: Apple and Major League Soccer are aligning for a new deal

Apple is taking a bite of Major League Soccer, locking in a deal that will see the Apple TV app become “the exclusive destination to watch every single live MLS match beginning in 2023,” allowing fans around the world to watch all MLS, Leagues Cup,1as well as select MLS NEXT Pro and MLS NEXT matches – in one place without any local broadcast blackouts or the need for a traditional pay TV bundle. The deal spans 2023-32 and will see the launch of a new MLS streaming service, available exclusively through the Apple TV app. In addition to all of the match content, the service will provide fans a new weekly live match whip-around show as well as game replays, highlights, analysis, and other original programming.

“Apple is the perfect partner to further accelerate the growth of MLS and deepen the connection between our clubs and their fans,” said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. “Given Apple’s ability to create a best-in-class user experience and to reach fans everywhere, it’ll be incredibly easy to enjoy MLS matches anywhere, whether you’re a super fan or casual viewer.”

PROGRAMMING

Jason Garrett’s new home will be with Football Night in America, with NBC sports tapping his insights to serve as an analyst on NBC and Peacock. Garrett, the former NFL quarterback and Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys, will work with host Maria Taylor and analysts Tony Dungy and Chris Simms in Studio 1 at NBC Sports’ International Broadcast Center in Stamford. Co-host Jac Collinsworth and analyst Rodney Harrison will once again anchor FNIA’s coverage from the game site, while NFL Insider Mike Florio will continue to report on the news of the day. Garrett is currently making his broadcasting debut as a game analyst alongside Jac Collinsworth (play-by-play) on NBC Sports’ coverage of the USFL.

Prime Video announced that NFL cornerback Richard Sherman will be joining its NFL pregame, halftime, and postgame shows this coming season, when the service presents its exclusive coverage of Thursday Night Football. Sherman will join Tony Gonzalez on the streamer’s wraparound coverage of each TNF game. “We’re excited to welcome Richard right off the field and onto our Thursday Night Football set,” said Jared Stacy, director of Global Live Sports Production, Prime Video. “Few people are better equipped to give insight into the modern NFL than Richard. Fans will love seeing his big personality and brilliant football mind on display every Thursday night on Prime Video.”

Game 5 of the 2022 NBA Finals handed ABC with an average of 13,025,000 viewers as the Golden State Warriors took a 3-2 series lead against the Boston Celtics. The ABC broadcast was up 30% over last year’s Game 5, according to Nielsen and propelled ABC to win the night across all of television, including in every key demographic. Through five games, viewership for the NBA Finals on ABC is averaging 12,087,000 viewers, up 26% vs. 2021 and is the most-watched in three years.

FOX Sports reports that its portion of the NASCAR season saw viewership upticks of 6% across FOX and FS1 with the season wrapping up on Sunday at Sonoma. The 2022 NASCAR Cup season also ranked as the second most-streamed ever with an average minute audience of nearly 36,000. While NASCAR Race Hub averaged 131,000 viewers, up 32% over 2021.

Meanwhile, the NTT INDYCAR SERIES is averaging a Total Audience Delivery of 1.721 million viewers across NBC Sports platforms this season, making it the most-watched start to a season through the first eight races since 2017. The beginning of the 2022 season is also up 5% vs. last year’s comparable coverage. 2022 also ranks as the most-streamed INDYCAR season on record with an AMA of 60,900 viewers. Viewership for Josef Newgarden’s third win of the season last Sunday peaked with a TV-only audience of 1.279 million viewers and averaged a household rating of 0.69.

CBS Sports’ final-round coverage of the RBC Canadian Open ranked as the most-watched round of the event in 22 Years. Sunday’s coverage averaged 2.775 million viewers, and peaked at 3.666 million viewers, according to Nielsen.

The return of the Eldora Million and the annual Dirt Late Model Dream saw strong numbers for FloSports, ranking as the second most-watched event in FloSports history The event saw nearly 40 million minutes watched live – a 42% YOY increase over 2021’s Dirt Late Model Dream.

In football news, Bell Media and the NFL cemented a long-term expansion of their comprehensive media rights agreement, which sees Bell Media remains the exclusive television broadcast partner of the NFL in Canada. The multi-year deal includes TNF, Sunday 1p and 4p games, as well as SNF and MNF. Also included is NFL RedZone, all International Series Games, and the post-season.

The NFL and NFL Films agreed to donate footage to The HistoryMakers, a nonprofit organization headquartered in Chicago. Under terms of the agreement, in addition to two years of funding the NFL will provide The HistoryMakers with hundreds of hours of footage from interviews with NFL African American legends from the past and present, including dozens of Pro Football Hall of Fame players. They will also donate their production services to interview prominent African American football players for inclusion to The HistoryMakers archives which our housed permanently at the Library of Congress.

BIG3 announced the full broadcast schedule for the league’s fifth season, including the dates and times for the Playoff and Championship games, highlighted by 54 hours of live games on DAZN worldwide in a new partnership. In the U.S., 29 hours of those games will stream live on DAZN, alongside availability on VYRE Network and BIG3 YouTube channel. “We couldn’t be happier to have DAZN join our stellar line up of broadcast partners for our fifth season,” said BIG3 CEO Chris Hannan. “With names like Leandro Barbosa and Dusan Bulut returning with a vengeance after last season, it’s clear that the league is growing both internationally and here at home. Now our fans around the globe – particularly in Canada and across Europe – can have access to the whole summer of FIREBALL3 action.”

NHL Network takes on the 2022 Stanley Cup Final with comprehensive daily coverage from Ball Arena and Amalie Arena. Jackie Redmond and EJ Hradek will team up for NHL Now every game day at 4p. Jamison Coyle and Jamie Hersch, Stu Grimson, Billy Jaffe, Mike Johnson, Mike Kelly and Mike Rupp will contribute to NHL Tonight every night at 6p and immediately following every game.

Former heavyweight boxing champion and mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, will be honored with the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the 2022 ESPYS, airing live on July 20 at 8p on ABC. The award is given to a “deserving member of the sporting world who makes a difference far beyond the field of play, impacting the world in indelible ways.” “It is a great honor for me to receive this award,” said Klitschko. “I am convinced that this is a recognition of the courage and inviolability of the Ukrainian people, who have been bravely resisting the Russian aggressor for more than 3 months. This is an award for everyone who defends the independence and freedom of Ukraine.”

The National Lacrosse league announced that Saturday’s winner takes all NLL Final Game Three matchup between the Buffalo Bandits and Colorado Mammoth at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York will now be shown 8p on ESPNU in addition to ESPN+ in the United States and TSN across Canada.

Prime Video announced a June 17 premiere date and released the official trailer for The Sessions: Draymond Green, a look inside the mind of NBA superstar Draymond Green. The special presentation is a co-production of Amazon Studios and Religion of Sports, and is directed by Religion of Sports’ Gotham Chopra.

UFC announced the MFAM Gauntlet: NICKMERCS vs TimtheTatman, a live esports competition featuring the two personalities that starts at 2p on July 1 as part of the UFC X fan experience at the Las Vegas Convention Center, and running on UFC’s official Twitch channel. NICKMERCS, co-owner of FaZe Clan, takes on TimTheTatman, co-owner of Complexity Gamin, in the virtual Octagon in EA SPORTS UFC 4 and will be coached in real-time by UFC athletes Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson and Adrian Yanez. The event will also feature a hotly contested Apex Legends matchup between some of the most talented players in the world. NICKMERCS and TimTheTatman will provide live commentary while their respective teams battle it out. Esports organization FlyQuest announced the promotion of Chief Operating Officer Michael Choi as the new CEO following the departure of Tricia Sugita. Choi first joined FlyQuest as a Senior Project Manager and Director of Operations before being named COO in April 2020. The partnership is designed to amplify BLAST Premier, with the Counter-Strike series becoming available across over 100 of DAZN’s territories, live and on-demand, including United Kingdom, Japan and USA. As part of the deal, DAZN will broadcast BLAST Premier’s remaining five events of the year including the Spring, Fall and World Finals. DAZN will broadcast this week’s Spring Final, which will be hosted in Lisbon’s Altice Arena.
