|Tech giants are in the crosshairs of House lawmakers, who on Friday announced bipartisan legislation aimed at diminishing their power. “Apple, Amazon, Facebook and Google have prioritized power over innovation and harmed American businesses and consumers in the process,” said Ken Buck (D-CO). “This legislation breaks up Big Tech’s monopoly power to control what Americans see and say online, and fosters an online market that encourages innovation and provides American small businesses with a fair playing field.” The five bills, if passed, would prohibit the acquisition of competitive threats; end platform monopolies; prohibit discriminatory conduct by dominant platforms; update filing fees for mergers, to ensure the DOJ and FTC have the resources to enforce antitrust laws; and promote competition online by lowering barriers to entry.
In a settlement with French authorities, Google was fined $268 million and agreed to make changes to its global advertising business. Authorities said Google’s ad management platform, Google Ad Manager, favored the company’s own online ad marketplace, Google AdX. Google committed to improving the way Ad Manager services worked with rival ad servers and ad space sales platforms to ensure it didn’t abuse its dominant position.
Facebook has acquired virtual reality game studio BigBox VR, maker of Fortnite-like “Population: One.” “We continue to invest in content that fosters social connection, and we believe POP: ONE delivers this experience to the VR community in spades within a super fun gaming experience,” said Mike Verdi, VP of Content, Facebook Reality Labs, in a blog post. “As part of the Oculus Studios family, BigBox VR will have the opportunity to grow POP: ONE and cultivate its community with the full support of Oculus Studios resources, and, in the future, pursue other projects.”
Apple announced new security features during its Worldwide Developer Conference keynote last week. Among the updates on the way are Passkeys in iCloudKeychain, allowing password-free authentification; Secure Paste, to help shield clipboard data from other apps; advanced fraud protection for Apple Card; and an “erase all content and settings” option for Mac.
In more Apple WWDC news, the company announced its development IDE, Xcode 13, now includes a built-in continuous integration and delivery service hosted on Apple’s cloud infrastructure. Apple says the service, Xcode Cloud, will help hasten development by combining cloud-based tools for building apps along with tools to run automated tests in parallel, deliver apps to testers via TestFlight and view tester feedback through the web-based App Store Connect dashboard.
A partnership between Gmail and marketing platform AppMail will allow marketers to create app-like functionality inside their emails. The solution “offers full shopping cart functionality, booking and reservation modules, interactive survey forms, and more,” according to AppMail’s website.

Testing, testing: Kameo, the COVID-19 testing service, is launching a digital platform to help streamline the task of tracking and managing COVID-19 testing and compliance on-site on productions. The new platform and expanded services will allow production management and health and safety teams to schedule and manage testing events across large groups with complex testing requirements, and will also host a symptom screener, with health questions customizable to the needs of each production, and a COVID passport, which will provide a centralized hub for cast, crew and production management to keep track of results.
