The number of homes with cable subscribers will dip by 2 percent and the average network will be down 3 percent in penetration for the month of June, estimates Nielsen. While the data does not include new OTT services like Sling, “the figures are consistent with the notion that cord shaving is impacting owners of cable networks,” said Pivotal Research’s Brian Wieser on Friday. Bucking the trend are Fox networks FXM, Fox Deportes, Fox Sports 2 and FXX, all forecast to go up versus year ago.
Donald Trump backed out of a debate with Bernie Sanders on Friday, saying in addition to the fact that “it seems inappropriate” that as the presumptive Republican presidential candidate he should debate the likely second place finisher, “The networks want to make a killing on these events and are not proving to be generous to charitable causes.” The topic of a Trump/Sanders debate had arisen on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday; the next day Trump said he’d participate “if we can raise $10 or $15 million for charity.” Responded Sanders, “Given that there are several television networks prepared to carry this debate and donate funds to charity, I hope he changes his mind once again.” #ChickenTrump quickly went viral.
Exclusive: As the decision about a possible retrial for Adnan Syed, convicted in 1999 of murdering his former high school girlfriend, looms, Investigation Discovery is premiering Adnan Syed: Innocent or Guilty? on Tuesday, June 14 at 9p. “With a judge expecting to make a decision at any time, we want to give our viewers not only the crucial information surrounding Adnan Syed’s case, but also the personal, first-hand accounts of what to expect from key players,” said Henry Schleiff, group president, ID, AHC and Destination America. Special is produced by ABC’s Lincoln Square Productions. The podcast re-examining the case, Serial, released in the fall of 2014, has over 130 million downloads.
NBC is providing next-day 4K coverage of high profile Olympic events like the opening and closing ceremonies, and basketball, track & field and swimming competitions. Cable, telco and satellite providers will air the 4K feed on dedicated channels. It’s the first time the general public will be offered 4K Olympics coverage from the net.
Marg Helgenberger (CSI) will receive the Crystal Nymph Award at the Monte Carlo Television Festival during the opening ceremony June 12. Last year’s honoree was Patricia Arquette (CSI: Cyber).
NBC’s live Red Nose Day charity special on Thursday dipped 25 percent among A18-49 versus last year, to .6/2, but raised over $31.5 million for children in need. Over 70 stars took part, including Julia Roberts, Elton John, Ellen DeGeneres and Will Ferrell.
eSports is set to explode (for a total of $500 million dollars in 2016 revenues), so it’s time to get in the game! Major brands see the benefits: “As a marketer we would be foolish to turn a deaf ear to the size of the [esports] audience.” said Bob Ruhland, Head of Marketing for Buffalo Wild Wings, and “[eSports] is where the future is” stated Rob Lynch, Brand President & CMO for Arby’s (sources: WSJ). Ten-part digital-first series Veterans Coming Home launches on PBS.org and PBS apps on June 1. New episodes will be introduced twice a week leading up to July 4. “Veterans Coming Home takes advantage of public media’s traditional strengths to convene community partners, engage veterans, chronicle their stories and reach significant audiences,” said Malcolm Brett of Wisconsin Public Television. “These strengths are enhanced by the opportunity for stations to create a prominent online presence around veterans’ issues through local stories that reflect how national themes play out in our communities.”
Revolt’s weekly music series Sounds by the Sound, covering Seattle music, is the branded brainchild of Visit Seattle and its agency of record Publicis Seattle. Season three, airing Mondays at 8p on Revolt and anytime at http://www.visitseattle.tv, includes a finale episode focused on local radio station KEXP. Why KEXP? “They’re a reflection of Seattle’s DNA in many ways,” Britt Fero, chief strategy officer of Publicis Seattle, tells Cynopsis. “They ARE music here. In fact, nearly every Seattle artist you talk to will end up mentioning KEXP in some say, shape or form (it’s happened on nearly every episode thus far!).” Adds Ali Daniels, VP marketing at Visit Seattle, “By creating branded entertainment we not only inspire but also educate potential travelers.”

Anderson Cooper fills the guest co-host seat on Live with Kelly on Wednesday, June 1 and Thursday, June 2. In 2014 Ripa said of Anderson – one of the names that has been bandied about as a replacement for Michael Strahan – “I’ve had a 20-year unrequited love affair with him.” As for Ripa’s husband Mark Consuelos (Kingdom), who joins Ripa as co-host on Friday, “He understands that Anderson doesn’t share my enthusiasm.”
There may be battles raging in the boardroom, but all’s quiet on the carriage front. A hearing has been set for June 7 regarding Dauman’s removal from the trust that will control Viacom following the death or incapacitation of 93-year-old Sumner Redstone.
