E! late nighter Chelsea Lately will last air Tuesday, August 21 at 11p, in a live, hour-long event, following a month of special eps and surprise guests. "I myself am more surprised than anyone that I was able to hold down a job for seven years, and it was a fantastic seven years," said Handler. "I will always look back at my time on E! as most people look back at their time in college. I’m glad I went."
NBC Entertainment is combining drama and comedy development with current, announced president Jennifer Salke. That news accompanies the elevation of head of drama development Pearlena Igbokwe to EVP of drama programming, and head of current Vernon Sanders to EVP of comedy programming. Head of comedy development Tal Rabinowitz is out. "I’m excited about this new structure because I believe it will strengthen our programming by essentially eliminating the often difficult handoff going from the development of a new show into the current process," said Salke.
Nielsen announced an expansion to sample sizes in 15 Local People Meter markets, increasing 200-300 homes in each for an average 30 percent increase. In the 31 set meter markets, Nielsen will expand the sample by 200 homes in each market over the next two years, representing an almost 50 percent increase in sample size.
Politically outspoken conservative actress Stacey Dash (Clueless) has signed onto Fox News as a contributor offering cultural analysis and commentary. "Stacey is an engaging conversationalist whose distinctive viewpoints among her Hollywood peers have spawned national debates – we’re pleased to have her join Fox News," said EVP programming Bill Shine.
NBCUniversal and Comcast will present their first hackathon, themed "Help Shape The Future of Media & Technology," June 21-22 at the NBCUniversal Technology Center’s Media Labs and 30 Rock’s Studio 8H. Over a 24-hour period, hackathon competitors will work on cross-platform solutions using content, products, and technology from NBCUniversal’s and Comcast’s entities. Media "uber-fans" will also be on hand to provide the perspective of the television power-user. "We look forward to seeing the new ideas these teams will produce that will help deliver more unique video and Internet experiences for media subscribers," said Sam Schwartz, chief business development officer of Comcast Cable.
Shine International is launching a branded on-demand channel on Roku, called Shine Now, with over 200 hours of drama, entertainment and documentary programming from the Shine Intl. catalogue, as well as third-party content. The streaming channel is available free with advertising, or ad-less for a fee.
Bravo‘s The People’s Couch, featuring the reactions of regular foks to TV’s buzz- and cringeworthy moments, expands to an hour starting Tuesday, June 3 at 10p. Canceled freshman comedies Friends With Better Lives and Bad Teacher have slipped off the CBS schedule, replaced by repeats of renewed series Mom, taking up Friends’ Monday-at-8:30p slot, and The Millers, bunking for now in Teacher’s Thursday-at-9:30p berth. Friends has four unaired eps remaining; Teacher has eight.
FX led the field of nominees for the Critics’ Choice Television Awards with 19 nods, followed by HBO with 18. Up for Best Comedy: The Big Bang Theory (CBS), Broad City (Comedy Central), Louie (FX), Orange Is the New Black (Netflix), Silicon Valley (HBO) and Veep (HBO). NBC drama Night Shift made a solid debut Tuesday, with a 1.6 rating among A18-49, according to preliminary Nielsens. But Fox‘s I Wanna Marry Harry is a royal dud, sinking from a paltry .7 among A18-49 for its May 20 premiere to .4.
The season premiere of ABC‘s Extreme Weight Loss delivered a 1.3 rating/4 share among A18-49, up 8 percent over its year-ago premiere in the time period, equaling its highest rating since July 2012. At 10p, Celebrity Wife Swap jumped 33 percent versus its last original episode, for a season high 1.2/3.
The season two premiere of VH1‘s Hit the Floor on Monday delivered a 1.4 rating among P18-49, up 40 percent versus its May 27 premiere in 2013. Combined with an 11p encore, the show drew 3.5 million total viewers.
ABC World News won the May sweep in A25-54 (2.014 million), its first sweeps victory in over 6 years and first win during a May sweep in 7 years. And Diane Sawyer made history – it was the first evening news program hosted by solely a woman to win a sweep month in the news demo.
Investigation Discovery boasted its best May ever in prime delivery among P2+ (744,000), HH (619,000), P25-54 (345,000) and W25-54 (227,000), earning it fifth place among ad-supported cable networks for both P25-54 and W25-54 in daytime, seventh for P25-54 and fourth in W25-54 in total day. "With shows like The Perfect Murder, there’s simply no defense: ID continues to dispose of the competition and, taking a page out of its new series, is now Most Infamous for its highest ratings ever for the month of May in Total Day and Prime Time!" crows Henry Schleiff, group president of ID, AHC, DA and Discovery Fit & Health, to Cynopsis.
Helped by Mountain Monsters, BBQ Pitmasters, and Buying the Bayou, Destination America earned its best May ever in Prime and Total Day, with double-digit growth versus May 2013. The net was up 38 percent in HH, 22 percent in P25-54 and 27 percent in P18-49 in primetime delivery, and up 31 percent in HH, 15 percent in P25-54 and 24 percent in P18-49 in Total Day.
Also celebrating? American Heroes Channel, with its best May ever in Prime delivery among P2+ and HH, and 15 consecutive months of year-over-year gains in Total Day delivery among P2+ and HH. Miniseries Nazis: An Evolution of Evil was AHC’s top rated series in premieres for Prime delivery among P2+ (312,000) and HH (274,000), followed by Myth Hunters, delivering 251,000 among P2+ and 211,000 among HH in Prime.
Discovery Channel also had big gains in May, up 11 percent in HH, 9 percent in total viewers P2+, 6 percent in M25-54, 5 percent in P25-54, and 4 percent in W25-54 versus May 2013. The net ranked in cable’s Top 10 for the month in Prime for M25-54 (number 6), P25-54 (7), M18-49 (7) and P18-49 (9).
Not to be outdone, Velocity announced its highest-delivering May among the target demos of P/M18-49, P/M25-54, P/M18-34, M18+ and P2+, and earned the highest-rated May in network history among P25-54 in primetime.
For the first time in nine years, Wheel of Fortune had to share the top spot among game shows, with Jeopardy matching its 6.8 household rating.
