Among the 46 winners at Monday’s Peabody Awards was Tom Brokaw, to accept a career achievement award. "If you live long enough these kind of awards come to you and/or you get cancer," said the former NBC News anchor. "Turns out, I ended up getting both…. Life is going to be OK because I’m in the enviable position of getting the best treatment in the world and it has made me much more conscious of what a privilege it is to have the kind of job that I have." Pivot will air highlights of the presentation in upcoming programming.
AT&T inked an agreement to buy DirecTV for $48.5 billion – but the deal could fall through if the satellite broadcaster doesn’t iron out a pact with the NFL for its NFL Sunday Ticket package. "AT&T may elect not to consummate the merger" if the contract, which expires at the end of next season, is not renewed, said the companies in a government filing. DirecTV CEO Mike White assured investors on a call he was confident they’d come to terms.
AMC‘s Halt and Catch Fire will be available via a two-week full-episode sneak preview on Tumblr, through VOD and TV Everywhere services on AMC.com. It’s Tumblr’s first-ever television series premiere, and the first time AMC has partnered with a social media platform to premiere a new show. The preview runs Monday, May 19-Saturday, May 31; drama premieres on AMC Sunday, June 1 at 10p.
ITV‘s Broadchurch was the big winner at Sunday’s BAFTA awards, picking up Best Drama, Best Actress (Olivia Colman) and Best Supporting Actor (David Bradley). The series is being remade Stateside as Gracepoint, premiering in the fall on Fox. Breaking Bad was named Best International Series, a first for Netflix, which airs the series in the U.K.
Submissions will be accepted May 23-June 6 for Sony Pictures Television‘s "Diverse Director Program," designed to "provide access and training to future directors and at the same time provide us with new, emerging talent behind the camera with various points of view," said president Steve Mosko. First 500 applications will be considered.
Action in the second season of CBS summer event series Under the Dome will move past the timeline in the Stephen King book on which it’s based, it was revealed at CBS’s "Summer Junket Day." Not that there’s anything wrong with that – Dome exec producer Neal Bauer said King himself will write and appear in the first episode.

SundanceTV greenlit a season two of Dream School, exec produced by Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson and hip hop’s Chuck D. This year’s "dream team" of instructors for kids falling through the cracks includes attorney Gloria Allred, restaurateur David Chang, Olympic skater Jonny Weir and artist Don Rimx, among others. Six-ep series premieres in the fall.
Saloon Media announced the production of Miracles Decoded, showing people who have experienced what they consider miracles, as well as experts offering scientific explanations for the events. Commissioned by History Canada, the series will air on History channels worldwide. The format aired in Latin America as Milagros Decodificados.
Animal Planet‘s River Monsters will return for a seventh season. Season six debuted last month with its most-watched premiere, and ranked as the most-watched network season premiere among key demos (975,000 P18-49, 639,000 M18-49, 605,000 P18-34 and 595,000 M25-54). Finale airs Monday, May 26 at 9p.
After the season three finale of Wicked Tuna, airing Sunday, June 8 at 9p, Nat Geo will air its first-ever talk show. The series’ captains and crewmen will join host Mike Salk before a live audience for Reel Talk Live to answer fans’ questions and share behind-the-scenes scoop.
Reelz‘s summer slate includes three new original series. Mansion Hunters, about the tricky business of property rentals, launches Wednesday, July 9 at 10p; Celebrity Damage Control, focusing on scandal-scarred stars, bows Thursday, July 10 at 10p and Celebrity Legacies tells the stories of what happened the estates of A-listers like Marilyn Monroe and Whitney Houston starting Tuesday, August 5 at 10p.
Three-part PBS series Time Scanners unlocks the secrets of great engineering achievements (Egyptian pyramids, St. Paul’s Cathedral) using laser technology. The Atlantic Productions doc launches Tuesday, July 1 at 8p.
Carrie Underwood co-wrote a song for ACM presents: An All-Star Salute to the Troops. "Keep Us Safe" debuts during the broadcast tonight, May 20 at 9p on CBS.
E! docusoap Men of the Strip premieres Sunday, June 1 at 10p. The "reality movie event," a look behind the scenes at an all-male revue, bows after the season two finale of Total Divas.
Speaking of the Divas, season three premieres Sunday, September 7 at 9p. Season two is averaging 798,000 among A18-49 with 1.3 million total viewers.

Telemundo Internacional and Television Nacional de Chile struck a deal for new series Duenos del Paraiso. Telemundo and TVN Chile will broadcast the scripted drama in the United States and Chile, respectively.
The Weather Channel and Toyota have teamed for a photography contest. Weather enthusiasts are invited to submit photos with the theme, "It’s Amazing Out There," to weather.com, starting Monday, June 16. Grand prize: $15,000 and a trip to Atlanta to be featured on the net. "We’ve been transformingweather.com and our mobile apps into a real destination," Neil Katz, editor-in-chief and VP of content of The Weather Company tells Cynopsis.
The partnership between Stanley Back + Decker and FC Barcelona soccer includes LED advertising during global broadcasts of matches, as well as marketing promotions and live events, sponsorship rights to club tours and a hospitality package at the Nou Camp stadium. The deal "demonstrates our continued investment and ongoing commitment to sports in general, and to the world of football in particular," said Scott Bannell, VP of brand management and licensing.
Nielsen is launching demographics for its Twitter TV ratings, after analysis revealed broad age and gender distribution across programming and significant differences in the age and gender of profiles of tweeters across programming types. What does it mean for marketers? "Twitter enables TV networks and advertisers to reach audiences beyond their core demographics," said the report. "Programs can complement and extend traditional TV reach through Twitter TV audiences." On average, Twitter TV authors for sports skewed 79 percent male; reality shows skewed 65 percent female, with 75 percent under the age of 35.
ABC‘s Sunday telecast of the 2014 Billboard Awards grew by 1.0 million viewers year-to-year, according to early Nielsens, for its most-watched telecast in 13 years, equaling an 11-year high among A18-49 (3.5/10).
Nat Geo WILD‘s Dr. Oakley, Yukon Vet averaged a .3 P25-54 rating and over 550,000 total viewers, making it the network’s number two series ever, after the net’s The Incredible Dr. Pol (.4 P25-54 rating and 613,000 total viewers).
Barbara Walters‘ last day as host on ABC‘s The View delivered 5.2 million total viewers, the number four telecast in the talker’s 17-year history.
HBO‘s Game of Thrones tied its series high with 7.2 million viewers at 9p on Sunday. The ep netted 8.5 million for the night; next original ep is June 1.
