IN THE NEWS
Minutes before its Upfront presentation yesterday, CBS Corp. was granted a restraining order against National Amusements’ Shari Redstone, preventing NAI from blocking a board meeting that could have diluted its voting shares in CBS from 80% to 17%. National Amusements, which is the controlling shareholder in CBS and Viacom, is pushing for a merger between the two companies that CBS opposes.
Which was why something was missing from CBS’s annual “Lox with Les” Upfront morning press breakfast, and it wasn’t the salmon. CBS chairman Les Moonves skipped the occasion for the first time. “Les sends his regards,” CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl told journalists. “But when the number of questions he couldn’t answer outweigh the number of questions he could, he thought it might be a good year to sit this one out.”
Moonves didn’t sit out the Upfront, though, striding onstage at Carnegie Hall to a standing ovation. “So, how’s your week been?” he asked the crowd. “For years, I have told you that I will only be out here for a short time. This year, for the first time, I might mean it.” Late Show host Stephen Colbert couldn’t resist a zinger, noting during his monologue that CBS has the most exciting legal dramas, and “they also have great TV shows.” (More on CBS’s Upfront below.)
TNT’s The Last Ship is docking – permanently. The drama series will end following its upcoming fifth season.
Lachlan Murdoch is set to serve as chairman and chief executive New Fox, which will be formed after the proposed sale of most of 21st Century Fox’s film and TV assets to Disney. Latin American TV host and actress Jacqueline Bracamontes signed a multi-project long-term deal with Telemundo. Her first assignment with the network will be hosting new primetime sports and entertainment show Viva el Mundial y Mas, premiering Thursday, June 14.
John Michael Higgins (Great News, Pitch Perfect) was named host of Game Show Network’s America Says. The series, premiering Monday, June 18 at 5p and airing Monday through Friday, challenges contestants to match survey answers for a chance to win $15,000.
CBS unveiled its 2018-2019 primetime lineup including the return of Murphy Brown, which reunites Candice Bergen and original cast members Faith Ford, Joe Regalbuto and Grant Shaud with series creator Diane English. The rebooted series sees Murphy returning to the airwaves with her FYI team and determined to draw the line between good television and honest reporting. CBS’ new shows for fall include two comedies: The Neighborhood, starring Cedric the Entertainer, and Happy Together, starring Damon Wayans Jr. and Amber Stevens West. Among the net’s new dramas is Magnum P.I., a modern take on the classic series starring Jay Hernandez and Perdita Weeks. Meanwhile, FBI, from Dick Wolf and the team behind the Law & Order franchise, is a fast-paced drama about the inner workings of the New York office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. And God Friended Me stars Brandan Micheal Hall as an atheist whose life is turned upside down when he receives a friend request on social media from God.” Kelly Kahl addressed the cancelation of Kevin Can Wait after two seasons. “It was heading in the wrong direction,” she said. “The numbers were going down as the year went on and looking forward, it didn’t look like a show that was going to be strong enough to anchor a night for us going forward.” Turner’s Upfront message to advertisers at The Theater at Madison Square Garden: Think different, and take advantage of the omnichannel experiences driven by fans.
The time is now for advertisers for invest in audience targeting, said David Levy, president of Turner; the company is expanding its AudienceNow solution to include cross-targeting across Turner’s digital properties. And 100% of Turner’s TV audience-targeted deals now run through industry consortium OpenAp. “I’m excited about it,” Donna Speciale, president of ad sales, told Cynopsis of Turner’s modernized approach. “The key to it is it’s one unified plan. We’ll be able to make it simple for advertisers.” Among the programming highlights, Kevin Reilly, president of TNTand TBS, touted TNT franchise Ridley Scott Presents and introduced the network’s other new branding franchise, Suspense Collection. Samantha Bee revealed her new This Is Not A Game: The Game gaming/voting app for the 2018 midterm elections, described as a “heart-pounding, prize-stuffed turducken of a trivia game in which average citizens play to the death or win kick-ass prizes, not sure which. We’re waiting to hear back from our lawyers.” TBS celebrated Conan O’Brien’s 25 years as a late night host with a clip reel, and announced an expanded partnership spanning TV, digital, social and live events.
