21st Century Fox and Apollo Global Management have a preliminary agreement to form a joint venture combining production companies Shine Group, Endemol and CORE Media Group. It’s the latest in a series of consolidations, including ITV’s purchase of Leftfield Entertainment last week. "There can be no assurance that the proposed transaction will be completed," cautioned a statement from 21st Century Fox announcing its intentions.

CW hasn’t given up on a Supernatural spin-off. In a Q&A call with reporters ahead of CW’s Upfront presentation, net president Mark Pedowitz said the first try "just didn’t get there," but the idea is "up for discussion." A backdoor pilot episode that aired during season nine is not on the fall or midseason schedule.

Neil Patrick Harris was approached by CBS CEO Les Moonves about doing a late night show, the How I Met Your Mother star told Howard Stern on Wednesday. Subscribers will have a "rewind-restart TV" capability, allowing them to watch programs in progress from the beginning.

The FCC voted 3-2 in favor of chairman Tom Wheeler‘s complex plan for the 2015 auction of wireless airwaves, including a limit on how much spectrum would be available to large wireless carriers. "What we’re dealing with today is a proposal, not a final rule," said Wheeler.

Craig Boswell joins CBS Newspath, the net’s 24-hour television newsgathering service, as a correspondent. Boswell had been a correspondent at Fox NewsEdge.

BRANDS & ADVERTISING

Calling all couch potatoes! A new study from Nielsen says people who watch the most television are particularly active consumers. Breaking viewers into five groups, Nielsen found nearly 50 percent of viewing comes from the heaviest 20 percent of viewers – who spend an average 705 minutes a day (!) in front of the TV. But they find time to shop: Heavy TV viewers are tops in 10 out of 17 purchasing categories.

AT THE UPFRONTS

At New York City Center, Neon Trees warmed up the glow stick-armed audience for The CW‘s presentation, which included the introduction of three new dramas and a new comedy.

Net president Mark Pedowitz noted, "It’s a very different CW" from the days of Gossip Girl, with a more gender-balanced audience and 43 percent more original programming than 2010.

In the fall, one-hour comedy Jane the Virgin, about an engaged virgin who is accidentally inseminated at a medical clinic, drops into the Monday-at-9p slot, following relocated The Originals. Superhero drama The Flash, from DC Entertainment, takes over Tuesday at 8p. Debuting in 2015: dramas iZombie (med student-turned-zombie) and rapture series The Messengers, along with the returns of Hart of Dixie and Beauty and the Beast.

The name of the Veronica Mars spin-off was revealed: Play It Again, Dick. And in July comes new eps of CW Seed‘s Backpackers.

Adult Swim didn’t take itself too seriously (surprise!) at a lively, packed Upfront party at NYC’s Terminal 5. The night was all about fun – Triumph the Insult Comic Dog gave a video introduction that set the tone, then hip hop duo Outkast rocked the house in a rare intimate club show. Four floors were set up with activities including a funhouse, a picture area with props and an adult "baby" in a crib.

For those keeping count, previously announced original series include a comedy created by Robert Smigel (SNL, Conan) starring Jack McBrayer (30 Rock) and the aforementioned Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, and pilots Dream Corp LLC, about a questionable experimental treatment facility; Neon Joe, Werewolf Hunter, the tale of a neon-clad man with a special skill set, and a comedy inspired by WorldStarHipHop.com, covering hip hop culture.

Premiering this summer and fall are Mike Tyson Mysteries, showing the heavyweight champ as crime fighter; Black Jesus, with the Son of God spreading love in present-day Compton, CA; Mr. Pickles, about a deviant border collie; anthology series  Tim & Eric’s Bedtime Stories and The Venture Bros. Special, an hour-long adventure "that will change the Ventureverse as we know it forever."

Housewives, Kardashians, Joan Rivers – NBCUniversal‘s Cable Entertainment Group’s Upfront for Bravo, E!, Esquire, Oxygen, Sprout, Syfy and USA at NYC’s Javits Center was hardly short on flash. Kim Kardashian joined ad sales president Linda Yaccarino onstage; Joan joked with Giuliana Rancic; Watch What Happens Live‘s Andy Cohen confessed, "I was asked to discuss social content on my show. We call it drinking. And gamefying the experience – we call it drinking." Speaking of, Yaccarino assured the Upfront-weary crowd – already served wine and champagne before the presentation got started – that the bar would be back in business within 85 minutes.

Sure enough, after a fast-paced peek at programming, Joel McHale, fresh off the cancellation of NBC’s Community, joked NBCU was starting a network called Sizzle – then wrapped things up. "I was going to make a joke about every network," he said, "but I need a drink and you do, too."
