IN THE NEWS
CBS filed a lawsuit aimed at allowing it to reduce the power of majority owner National Amusements, which has an 80% share in CBS and Viacom. The suit seeks to keep National Amusements from interfering with a special meeting of the CBS board of directors to consider issuing a dividend that would reduce NAI’s voting interest to 17%. CBS claims recent actions by National Amusements president Shari Redstone, who is pushing for a merger between Viacom and CBS, “presents a significant threat of irreparable and irreversible harm.” NAI responded with a statement saying it had “absolutely no intention” of replacing the CBS board or forcing a deal not supported by both companies, adding it believes the lawsuit was filed because National Amusements raised concerns about bullying and intimidation by a director in 2016.
Fox picked up a third season of Lethal Weapon, a decision that had been in doubt after reports of on-set behavior problems with series co-star Clayne Crawford. “It sounds very easy going into a third season on a show that we like a lot,” Dana Walden, Fox TV Group chairman and CEO, said Monday during a press call. “But, ultimately, our partners at Warner Bros. came to us about three weeks ago to tell us that they could not deliver Lethal Weapon as we’ve known it before, that there were some real challenges in the cast. They thought long and hard about it.” Crawford is being replaced by Seann William Scott (American Pie), who will play a new character opposite Damon Wayans. Fox also ordered a fifth and final season of DC Comics drama Gotham.
What does ABC’s pickup of action dramedy Whiskey Cavalier means for series star Lauren Cohan’s role on AMC’s The Walking Dead? Cohan will return to the zombie drama for six episodes of season nine, which she’ll film ahead of the start of production on Whiskey. She will also be able to do episodes during the ABC show’s hiatus.
Quantico, which did not get renewed by ABC, will move from Thursday to Friday nights for the remainder of its season three run, starting May 25.
AT THE UPFRONTS
NBCUniversal’s Upfront on Monday at Radio City Music Hall launched with Will & Grace star Debra Messing leading the NBC gang in an opening musical number. Among the highlights of the event: Project Runway is coming home. The series, which aired on Bravo from 2004-2008 then moved to Lifetime, will be back on Bravo for season 17. ”This franchise will be an important cornerstone to complement Bravo’s original premium scripted and unscripted slate,” said Frances Berwick, president of Lifestyle Networks, NBCU Cable Entertainment….Katherine Heigl, new to Suits, said she doesn’t think she “could have joined the USA family at a better time”….Meanwhile the Suits spin-off has a name: Second City. Series star Gina Torres broke the news…Telemundo offered a rousing number celebrating, “I am the majority of the new mainstream”…. “Journalism is at the heart of what we do. And facts do matter,” said NBC News anchor Lester Holt, in a promotion of the news group….Simon Cowell said when tried to sell America’s Got Talent 14 years ago, “It was dead in the water, and I was very fortunate to get a call from NBC. The big reason it is so successful is that they believe in it, understand what it is all about and pushed us to get better and better.”…Kicking up their heels in a final number were Jennifer Lopez and her World of Dance.
NBCUni head of sales Linda Yaccarino pointed to the reception for the U.S. Women’s Olympics hockey team, the first guests of the morning, as demonstrating the power of television. “When is the last time you’ve seen a standing ovation at an upfront?” she asked. “We just blew the doors off Radio City and that was our intention. To give you a taste of what we do everyday, on every channel, on every screen.” Plus, “You get it all under one roof. When the social media guys can do that, just let me know. But I wouldn’t hold your breath. We’re not in the ‘likes’ business. We’re in the results business.”
NBC unveiled its year-round lineup on Sunday, and the slate included two new dramas and a comedy for fall; over the course of the season, the net will air two new comedies, five new dramas and one alternative reality series. For details, go to the Cynopsis Upfronts portal: http://www.cynopsis.com/upfronts2018/?post=127072
Ad sales head Joe Marchese was front and center at Fox’s Upfront event at NYC’s Beacon Theatre. Marchese talked about one initiative, “JAZ pods,” which feature just two 30-second spots, to get viewers more engaged and give ad buyers more brand lift. “Lower frequency, higher impact,” said Marchese. (Beat Shazam host Jamie Foxx host appeared impressed – he didn’t let Marchese leave the stage, instead encouraging him to dance. “This part wasn’t scripted!” said Marchese as he slipped away.)….Ryan Murphy, who just inked a massive deal with Netflix, said despite the July 1 start of his streaming pact, “I still want to be involved in all the shows that I’m doing.” That would include season two of 9-1-1, which Murphy announced now includes cast member Jennifer Love Hewitt (Party of Five)…. Football’s big for fall, with Fox having engineered a five-season deal for Thursday Night Football (last season games were divided between Fox, CBS and NBC). Giants quarterback Eli Manning was on hand with pointers for the audience for surviving New York City, including: “The subway is supposed to smell like that.”
Fox offered up three new comedies and two dramas, including ABC transplant Last Man Standing, for the 2018-2019 season. Last Man Standing landed the Friday-at-8p timeslot, where it aired for most of its 2011-2017 run, followed by new comedy The Cool Kids, about a group of retirement community friends. New comedy REL has the 9:30p Sunday slot. Freshman dramas The Passage and Proven Innocent arrive midseason, along with Cosmos: Possible Worlds. Live version of the musical Rent is also slated for midseason.
As for Disney’s (or maybe Comcast’s) acquisition of much 21st Century Fox, leaving just the Fox broadcast network, Fox News and local stations (or “New Fox”), “We’re positioning our network for the future and not tethering it to the past,” said Fox CEO Dana Walden.

DIGITAL DATA
YouTube TV faces an uphill battle to reach profitability, according to Bernstein Research analyst Todd Juenger. “Any way we add it up, it loses money. (Just like all the other vMVPDs also lose money.),” wrote Juenger in a note to shareholders. One possibility: a significant sports contract – and it wouldn’t have to be a major pro league. In that case, suggested Juenger, YouTube TV could create their own network as a home for it, “and they would control and monetize 100% of the ad inventory.”
Facebook suspended about 200 apps suspected of misusing member data. The apps will undergo investigation and if they are found guilty, users will be notified and the apps banned.
