UPFRONTS UPDATE

Building on the momentum of its recent brand refresh, truTV has announced 17 new shows. “These new shows, specials and pilots are the kind of fresh and innovative programming that will help us build on the success our ‘Way More Fun’ brand is generating," said Chris Linn, president, head of programming for truTV.

First up, the net has greenlit its first-ever fully scripted series, Those Who Can’t, a comedy about a trio of frustrated high school teachers. It stars show creators Adam Cayton-Holland, Andrew Orvedahl and Ben Roy, members of the Denver-based comedy troupe The Grawlix.  Other series include: Fameless, a half-prank/half-sketch show from David Spade; Six Degrees of Everything, a fast-paced, comedic look at the unexpected connections between various topics; Adam Ruins Everything, an investigative comedy in which Adam Conover debunks social conventions, and The Driver’s Seat (wt), a show that hits the road to discover what people really dish about in the privacy of their own four wheels.

On the development front, truTV has ordered a television version of CollegeHumor’s long-running Jake and Amir, a guerilla-style game show, a docu-series about a weed distribution business run by four women, a new project from How to Be a Grownup‘s Tom Segura and Christina Pazsistky and a docuseries that follows a season of the FXFL’s Brooklyn Bolts football team.

The CW presented its 2015-16 broadcast schedule at New York City Center in New York. President Mark Pedowitz noted that the network wrapped its “most watched season” ever and its highest-rated season among men in seven years. He called new fall series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend “a perfect companion for Jane the Virgin on Monday nights.” It follows Rebecca Bunch (Rachel Bloom), a successful young woman who impulsively gives up everything  her partnership at a prestigious law firm and her upscale apartment in Manhattan  in an attempt to find love in West Covina, Calif.

New seasons of America’s Next Top Model, Penn & Teller: Fool Us and Masters of Illusion were ordered to air in 2015. iZombie is slated to return as well. Mid-season series include DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Containment, about an urban quarantine enforced after a deadly epidemic breaks out in Atlanta. The net also announced a new broadcast and digital partnership with Just For Laughs, in which the CW will broadcast an exclusive two-hour special next season featuring performances from top comedians and new stars, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal. Finally, the second annual World Dog Awards, hosted by George Lopez, will return to The CW in January 2016.

"I know it’s been along week, but I think we saved the best for last," said chairman of NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment Bonnie Hammer at the final Upfront presentation on Thursday at NYC’s Javits Center. Hammer was joined by a group of the portfolio’s talent 168 strong, including Real Housewives, Kardashians, Prancing Elites and matchmakers, to name just a few.

Hosts Nick Cannon, of Oxygen‘s Next Gen Boss, E! NewsGiuliana Rancic and Watch What Happens Live‘s Andy Cohen hosted, as packages of the nets’ clips told the content story. "This year we’ve invested in more original programming than ever before, 140 series across our networks," said Hammer.

Talk eventually turned to data, and Linda Yaccarino, Chairman, Advertising Sales and Client Partnerships announced that during the 2015-16 season, NBCU will start using Comcast set top box data to power its Audience Targeting Platform. Hammer asked that the audience leave with three things in mind: "First, nowhere else will you find the strength and reach of our portfolio, a collection of the most unique, targeted and diversified brands in the entire business.” Second: "Our premium content, truly outstanding programming, both scripted and reality, on a scale that you won’t find anywhere else." And finally, ‘We know what it takes to compete in this constantly changing media landscape. We offer a totally immersive experience, connecting our audiences on all screens, across all platforms 24/7.”
