05/07/18: NBC Sports is partnering with Ricky Fowler for a look at the Oklahoma State golf program

Good morning. It’s Monday May 7, 2018 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

 
Tonight will see the debut of four-part documentary series – Driven: Oklahoma State Cowboys, presented by NBC Sports Group in partnership with PGA TOUR superstar Rickie Fowler. NBC Sports will showcase the first three premieres of the series on Golf Channel this evening at 10p with encores running on NBCSN, and the finale on NBC, Saturday on June 16, recapping their historic season culminated by their run at a potential 11th national championship. Driven will span Oklahoma State’s 2017-18 college golf season both on and off the golf course, written and produced by Ollie Stokes. Rickie Fowler, Executive Producer, of the series and Mike McCarley, President, Golf, NBC Sports, spoke with the press about the series last week.
 
McCarley on the show: This is a long-time project coming together. It really started when Golf Channel made the commitment in 2014 to start covering the NCAAs live on television in a significant way and has evolved quite a bit over the years where we’re now really able to tell the stories of some of the top golf programs and really tell the stories of the future stars of the PGA TOUR and the LPGA, in many instances, across news programming but now this new primetime series, Driven.
 
Fowler on the his alma mater: When I was asked to join on with Golf Channel and NBC with the Driven project, obviously it was kind of a no-brainer with the first show spotlighting Oklahoma State in Stillwater, something very close to me, a place that’s like a second home, and a place without it, I probably wouldn’t be in the same position I am today. To be able to jump on board and help show the world what college golf is all about, I think it’s been up until the last few years where Golf Channel started to show the NCAAs live, it’s been a pretty quiet space.
 
Fowler on producing: For me, I mean, kind of getting into the media side of things in the last year, having my own media company now, but just kind of seeing — it’s crazy how much work goes into all of this, and obviously shooting a lot of content to put together 30-minute shows basically. The amount of time that the camera crew and Golf Channel and everyone has put in, it’s amazing. I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of it and have had — I think I’ve talked about the hands on with being there in Stillwater and being with the team in Florida.
 
 
ON THE AIR

Justify’s win at the Kentucky Derby delivered upticks for NBC Sports, which saw the telecast notch a 9.1/21 in overnight Nielsen scores (and not counting digital) for the event. The race led into NBC’s best-ever overnight score for an early round NHL Playoff game. The race peaked at 10.9/25 from 6:45-7p, the quarter hour that actually saw the race, with Louisville once again leading all markets with a 37/2/62.
 
The NBA updated its Playoff broadcast schedule, announcing that game 5 of Jazz/Rockets will run on TNT at 8p, while the Pelicans/Warriors follows at 10:30p on the channel.
 
ESPN is expanding its coverage for next weekend’s Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix, adding more on-track content to the programming mix. Coming from Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, viewers will be able to watch coverage of the first two F1 practice sessions of the weekend on ESPNU. The third Spanish Grand Prix practice session, qualifying and the race will air on ESPN2 with competition starting on Sunday at 9a.
 
On the local front, SNY serves up its new series Athletic Appetites starting Wednesday at 6:30p. The series spawns from a regular segment on the network, hosted by sports anchor Michelle Yu and featuring some of the Big Apple’s most popular athletes honing their professional skills in the kitchen. Ep one features New York Knicks legend Larry Johnson, New York Mets Hall of Famer John Franco, WNBA Champion and Olympic Gold medalist Sue Bird, and former New York Jets Bart Scott.

PennGrade is reportedly dropping out as the presenting sponsor for the Indianapolis 500 following the expiration of its three-year contract. With first quarter numbers in the books this year, AEG reports the company’s best-ever first two months of business, inking $95 million in contractually obligated income in 60 days. The period saw the company lock in new business and/or renewal partnerships with companies that include: Nike, San Manuel, Pernod Ricard, UBS, Kona Brewing Co., and Kinecta Federal Credit Union.
 
 
DIGITAL & STREAMING

Major League Soccer gave its app an overhaul, rolling out an all-new version of the platform that will include features such as: deep personalization; a complete interface refresh, quick notifications of scores, news, lineup releases, goals, highlights and more; an all-new Match Center; fully integrated fantasy, condensed matches and more.
 
Sportradar has announced a new partnership with advanced digital technology acceleration platform SPARK. The alliance will see Sportradar support a range of SPARK’s events. SPARK’s startups will also gain a number of benefits from the new partnership, with the chance to leverage Sportradar’s bespoke sports data.
 
 
ESPORTS

T-Mobile and the Houston Outlaws have entered into an official partnership, marking the first sponsorship agreement for Houston’s Overwatch League team. As part of the agreement, the brand will now become the Official Wireless Partner of the Houston Outlaws and its individual players and customers will be able to tap into perks like VIP seating at all official Outlaws events, exclusive discounts and more. T-Mobile and the Outlaws will also collaborate on a new content series that will give fans an inside look at the team’s players and their experiences in the Overwatch League. “T-Mobile is not only America’s fastest network, but the fastest to embrace esports,” said Ryan Musselman, Senior Vice President of Infinite Esports and Entertainment, “This commitment and dedication makes them a top choice for the Houston Outlaws.”
 
NETGEAR Nighthawk Pro Gaming and NRG esports locked in a partnership that will see the team leverage Nighthawk Pro Gaming products into their training regimen, including its training facility and Boot Camps at the NETGEAR headquarters in the new Nighthawk Pro Gaming lounge.“We are pleased to be working with NETGEAR, the leading provider of networking equipment for the home, gamers and small business,” said Andy Miller, owner and CEO of NRG and the San Francisco Shock. “We look forward to this collaboration and hope to set the tone for how corporate endemic brands support these exciting teams of professional gamers.”
 
Hi-Rez Studios announced that it will bring the next Hi-Rez Expo to Dreamhack Atlanta 2018, courtesy of a new deal with the Nov. 16-18 event at the Georgia World Congress Center. “This partnership with Dreamhack Atlanta is the perfect opportunity to give our fans and pro players an even better HRX experience,” said Stew Chisam, President of Hi-Rez Studios. “After selling out the past three Hi-Rez Expos months in advance, DreamHack Atlanta gives us the opportunity to add more attendees, a larger event space and more fan activities at a lower ticket cost than previous Hi-Rez Expos. In addition to providing more stage room to showcase our world-class esports, the event can now offer an area dedicated to panels and dev meetings, giving us even more ways to celebrate and interact with our community.”

Meanwhile, DreamHack and ASTRO Gaming extended their partnership into 2018 for DreamHack Open, bringing DreamHack Open live from 8 live events in Europe and North America with $800,000 in prize money on the line. ASTRO will be on site at selected events throughout the year and will assist DreamHack with the on stage audio and communications setup for teams and players at multiple events.

Four potential playoff series could come to a close. On the NBA front, Celtics/76ers tips off at 6p on TNT, followed by Raptors/Cavaliers on the network at 8:30p. From the NHL, Caps/Penguins runs at 7p on NBCSN, while Predators/Jets face off at 9:30p.
