Twitter’s first-ever Digital Content NewFronts presentation was heavy on the sports front, as the platform unveiled new live streaming content deals across the sports spectrum. Among the content poised to hit the social network will be the WNBA, MLBAM, STADIUM, The Players’ Tribune and PGA TOUR. With the WNBA, Twitter will now live stream a weekly regular-season game on Twitter for a total of 20 total per season during the 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons. The MLBAM partnership will feature weekly live MLB games that stream on Twitter this season, as well as a new 3-hour once weekly MLB program will live stream exclusively on Twitter featuring live MLB game look-ins and highlights. The Players’ Tribune will serve up the live series #Verified, described as a modern forum for athletes to connect directly with fans featuring athletes answering fan questions and sharing their insight, reactions and timely takes on important topics on and off the field. The PGA TOUR partnership will look to build upon the current live stream relationship between Twitter and PGA TOUR LIVE that features more than 70 hours of live competition coverage across 31 tournaments.
 
“The Players’ Tribune and Twitter share similar sensibilities and goals in giving newsmakers a platform to connect and engage directly with an audience,” says Jaymee Messler, president of The Players’ Tribune. “#Verified is a fresh take on the dated format of the traditional press conference, and it will give fans a place to connect directly with some of their favorite athletes in an immediate and organic way.”

ON THE AIR

Meanwhile, Twitter’s deal for STADIUM, revealed the name for the new network, which combines 120 Sports, Silver Chalice and American Sports Network into a national platform. The channel will roll out a slate of supportive branding elements that include logos, taglines, etc. in the coming weeks. STADIUM will be available as both an OTA 24/7 linear offering as well as a comprehensive digital offering with the linear experience streaming live on Twitter in the coming months.
 
NBC Sports Group revealed that – midway through the second round of the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs – its coverage across NBC, NBCSN, CNBC, USA Network, and digital platforms saw Total Audience Delivery of the first 49 games average 829,000 viewers, marking the best score in three years and up 3% over 2017 despite the participation of five Canadian teams in the 2017 playoffs. Monday night’s Washington-Pittsburgh Game 3 on NBCSN delivered a 1.49 overnight rating, to rank as the best cable overnight of the 2017 playoffs.
 
Meanwhile, Saturday’s battle between Anthony Joshua/Wladimir Klitschko delivered an average of 659,000 viewers for Showtime’s airing of the event. Boxing Scene reports that the average marks the highest in network history for a live afternoon boxing telecast.
 
Rounding out the ratings news, NBA TV reports that its first round playoff programming delivered viewership gains across both Prime, (up 15%), and Total Day, (13%) over 2016, along with increases across all key demos, according to Nielsen. The channel’s pre- and post-game NBA Playoff studio coverage for the first round was up 17% and 10%, respectively, vs. last year’s comparable coverage
 
Golf Channel announced a second season of Driver vs. Driver, with a premiere date slated for Fall 2018. Driver vs. Driver 2 will offer viewers “an exclusive, inside look at the complex process of designing a driver – from creating a functional prototype, to testing clubs with PGA TOUR players, to showcasing head-to-head competitions in an effort to ultimately develop the next world-class driver from Wilson.” Golf Channel and Wilson Golf issued a formal “Call for Entries,” inviting inventors, golf enthusiasts, product designers, engineers, product developers, and creative, big thinkers to share their ideas for the world’s next great golf driver concept.
 
The National Hockey League and the Buffalo Sabres announced that the NHL Scouting Combine will remain in Buffalo through 2019, with each of the next three events being held at KeyBank Center and HarborCenter. The event, held annually in late May and early June, consists of player interviews, medical assessments and a series of physical fitness tests.
 
Meanwhile, the NHL also updated its 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs Second Round schedule, noting that the start time of Game 5 of the Second Round Series between the Rangers/Senators, if necessary, will take place at 3p on Saturday on NBCSN, while Game 5 between the Penguins/Capitals has been set for 7:15p that evening on NBC.
 
ESPN re-signed NBA game analyst Mark Jackson with a new multi-year deal. Jackson will continue to provide commentary for top games on ESPN and ABC. Jackson first joined ESPN in 2006. Meanwhile, USA Today writes that Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski finalized a deal with ESPN to begin working for the company by the start of NBA free agency on July 1. Wojnarowski will be joined at ESPN by other staffers from his site, The Vertical.
 
ESPN serves up week-long coverage across all its platforms in English and Spanish around the Cinco de Mayo boxing weekend live from Las Vegas. Coverage will be headlined by a May 5 presentation of Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN tripleheader live on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes at 8p. ESPN’s English-language commentary team is headed by Bernardo Osuna and analyst Teddy Atlas .
 
SiriusXM takes on the Kentucky Derby, on Saturday with the wire-to-wire race broadcast of the Kentucky Derby provided by NBC Sports Radio and produced in partnership with HRRN and Westwood One. The day will include over 11 hours of programming originating from Churchill Downs that will provide listeners with day-of news and pre-race analysis, and interviews with jockeys, trainers and owners staring at 8a with a live edition of HRRN’s Equine Forum show.

The Monster Energy Bellator MMA Fight Series is set to hit Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 20 during the Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race weekend, serving up several MMA bouts throughout the afternoon ahead to the start of the on-track racing action. All bouts are set to take place staring at 3:30p at the Monster Energy display in the Charlotte Motor Speedway Fan Zone. Fans will also have the opportunity to meet Tito Ortiz and Dan Henderson on May 19 at 3p.
 
WWE announced plans to tangle with COMBOS for an in-store promotion starting Friday. The deal marks the first time the two brands will team up for this type of activation, which will offer fans a chance to win WWE prizes, such as tickets, gear and WWE experiences.
 
Organizers of the ShopRite LPGA Classic are dangling the last sponsor exemption to the winner of a Twitter vote being held this week. ESPN writes that  ShopRite officials teamed with MVP Index to pinpoint top female golfers in social media who don’t already have a spot in the event with finalists set to include: Blair O’Neal, Sharmila Nicollet, Carly Booth and Susana Benavides.
 
 
DIGITAL & STREAMING

IMG and Mandalay Sports Media revealed a new joint venture which will see the two companies work together to develop, finance and produce a slate of feature films focused on sports shaping broader cultural narratives. The companies will look to produce at least ten feature films over the next three – five years from their active development slate, which will be distributed via streaming platforms and traditional theatrical release. The first project to debut as part of this deal will be The Art of Fielding, based on the New York Times Bestseller by Chad Harbach about a small school on the shore of Lake Michigan, where baseball star Henry Skrimshander search for big league stardom goes awry.
 
The PGA Tour and The Players Championship announced that the 17th hole will be broadcast live in VR with footage available using a Samsung Gear VR headset via the PGA Tour VR Live app with streaming also available on Twitter. The experience will be provided by a collaboration between PGA and Intel, using Intel’s True VR technology. “We are excited that THE PLAYERS Championship will host the PGA TOUR’s first live virtual reality production,” said Rick Anderson, PGA TOUR Chief Media Officer. “The PGA TOUR has experimented with virtual reality content for nearly two years. We tested Intel’s True VR technology on a live basis at the Genesis Open in February, and were very pleased with the quality. We decided that executing a live VR experience on one of the most dramatic holes in golf was something that our fans would love, and the fact that we are partnering with Twitter to deliver 360 video will offer tremendous scale.”
 
 
ESPORTS

The Call of Duty World League Championship has locked in on the Amway Center in Orlando, with play slated to run from Aug. 9 – 13. The will mark the event’s first time in the East Coast, as 32 teams vie for a prize pool of $1.5 million. “The CWL 2017 season is already shaping up to be the biggest one yet,” said Rob Kostich, EVP and general manager of Call of Duty, Activision. “The live events all over the world, including Atlanta, Dallas, Las Vegas, Paris and Sydney have been incredible, and the Global Pro League has already featured intense match ups with teams going after the big Stage 1 prize purses. So, the CWL Champs in August becomes even more fitting as the culmination of the best that Call of Duty esports has to offer this year. We can’t wait for Orlando.”
 
The Australian Football League became with latest organization to tap into esports, and will look to run a league tournament at Etihad Stadium with a call for AFL clubs to sponsor or create their own eSports teams, according to The Age.
 
ELeague will see Group C take action for the Street Fighter V Invitational on TBS this Friday at 10p. Group C will feature six contenders – Joshua “WOLFKRONE” Philpot, Ai “Fuudo” Keita, Kun “Xian” Xian Ho, Ryan “FChamp” Ramirez, Joe “MOV” Egami and Hajime “Tokido” Taniguchi.
 
Mobile esports company Skillz announced that it has doubled its revenue run-rate to over $100 million in the past eight months. Since June 2016, the Skillz user base has grown by more than 32 percent to 11.9 million with the number of female players growing from 49% last June to 53% today. Meanwhile, June saw the average Skillz player competed for over 50 minutes per day, which swelled to over 61 minutes a day for a gain of 5%.  
 
Publisher Wavedash Games raised $6 million in Series A funding, led by March Capital Partners. The company, founded by game developers from EA, Riot Games, and Blizzard, will leverage the financing to grow its team and complete the development of its new Platform Fighter game. “The Platform Fighter community is one of the most vibrant in gaming,” said Matt Fairchild, Wavedash’s CEO and co-founder. “But it has yet to reach its full potential. We’re following the trail blazed by Riot Games and Valve by bringing community passion together with world class developer talent.”
 
PENTA Sports locked in stake-to-play gaming platform Epulze to serve as the first exclusive sponsor for its Dota 2 team, per TEO. The platform allows players to bet on their own matches using either real money, or the platform’s own Epulze Emeralds currency.

FOX Sports formally named Alexis Ginas to the newly created position of Senior Vice President, Cross-Platform Solutions, where she will be charged with shaping a 360-degree cross-platform approach to monetizing FOX Sports’ live event and studio content across linear and non-linear platforms.
 
Entercom Communications tapped Mike Dee to serve as President of Entercom Sports, a newly developed position focused on creating value for the company’s sports business enterprise.  Dee most recently served as President and Chief Executive Officer for the San Diego Padres.
