The debut date of Paramount Network black comedy Heathers, postponed from March 7 after the deadly shooting in Parkland, FL, has been set for Tuesday, July 10. The news was shared on social media yesterday.

E! announced six new series and three unscripted development projects. New series include a talk show hosted by actress Busy Philipps; a show centered around the women of podcast “The LadyGang”; a docu-series featuring actress and singer Ashlee Simpson-Ross and her husband, Evan Ross; a comedic dance show; a modernized version of E! True Hollywood Story; and a series following influencers who are best friends. “E! is a pop culture network that is for and about women, and these series hit the mark when it comes to fun, aspirational content and engaging storytelling for our audience,” said Amy Introcaso-Davis, EVP, production & development.

Inclusion Media, founded by Broadway producer Howard Kagan, submitted a $315 million offer for The Weinstein Company, reports Deadline. Part of the offer includes a pledge to cooperate with victims of sexual assault seeking justice. That’s in line with a request from Attorney General Eric Scheiderman that bidders set aside resources to compensate injured employees.

“I have paid for Netflix for a decade but I have no relationship with them emotionally as a customer,” said MGM TV and Digital group president Mark Burnett at the Milken Institute Global Conference yesterday. The topic: how content creators can connect with consumers in a changing media universe. “How do you get that relationship with customers? The closest example in our world is Amazon,” said Burnett.

Season four of Arrested Development is being released again on Netflix, but it will look different this time around. Creator Mitch Hurwitz announced via social media that he recut the season for Arrested Development Season 4 Remix: Fateful Consequences, shuffling content from 15 individualized stories to make 22 interwoven episodes. Recut version will become available May 4; season 5 will be “coming soon,” promised Hurwitz.

Amazon Rose Parade hosts Cord Hosenbeck and Tish Cattigan, aka Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon, will reunite for HBO’s live coverage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding. The Royal Wedding Live with Cord and Tish!, produced by Funny or Die, airs Saturday, May 19 at 7:30a, with a replay later that day. “This wedding is going to be a blast,” said Cord. “There will be more luxury packed into that church than all the Bed, Bath and Beyonds combined.”

A third woman has accused NBC News veteran Tom Brokaw of unwanted sexual advances: Mary Reinholz claims Brokaw attempted to kiss her 50 years ago, an encounter that left her “uncomfortable.” The allegation follows a claim by Linda Vester – vehemently denied by the journalist – that Brokaw tried to kiss her in the 1990s, and an anonymous former production assistant’s story of Brokaw placing her hands on his chest and requesting that she come to his office.

Tony Award nominations were announced, and Mean Girls and SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical lead the pack with nominations in 12 categories each. Ceremony will be broadcast Sunday, June 10 on CBS.

AT THE NEWFRONTS

At its NewFront yesterday, Disney Digital Network announced an OTT video app aimed at millenials from Disney editorial brand, Oh My Disney, featuring social content and other short form programming. Among initiatives is Disney Eats, a content brand with original shows from Tastemade that will deliver “a diverse culinary adventure inspired by Disney’s cast of characters and the many flavors of Disney Parks around the world.” DDN also introduced its “Star Wars Season of the Fan,” a cross-network campaign aimed at the franchise’s fans that includes expanded categories in the Star Wars Fan Film Awards; winners will appear during a special live-streamed show, filmed in LucasFilm’s offices. “We know that our clients and advertisers are looking for unique, compelling, brand-safe, and diverse ways to reach audiences at scale,” said Rita Ferro, President Advertising Sales and Marketing, Direct-to-Consumer and International, Disney|ABC. “The results that Disney Digital Network has generated for advertisers in the last year alone prove that we are delivering on those needs,” she said.

Disney Digital Network joins Viacom Digital Studios and others in upping their efforts to satisfy the hunger for short form digital content. You can learn more about this emerging space – who’s doing what, and what’s working – with the Cynopsis Short Form Content e-newsletter, coming out weekly during the month of May. Look for the first edition on Friday morning.

Conde Nast is expanding its OTT offerings with channels for Bon Appetit, GQ and Wired, along with 35 returning series 60 digital pilots in the pipeline. “While consumers have more screens and more content to choose from than ever before, advertisers face the challenge of less buyable options,” said Pamela Drucker Mann, chief revenue and marketing officer. “Conde Nast has the engagement, brand safety and influence that make us the most impactful, buyable solution in the industry. And our new OTT expansion is significant because it brings the quality of Conde Nast to next gen consumers on new platforms, and in new ways.” Overall digital video views in 2017 reached 12 billion, and in 1Q18 global video viewers across platforms were up 77% versus a year earlier.

It’s all about live content, said Twitter at its NewFront event, with partnerships that appeal to a wide range of users. “For advertisers who want to associate their brand with compelling video content, Twitter offers the distinct ability to tie that video conversation to the biggest live moments and live content in the world, ultimately allowing brands to be a part of the cultural zeitgeist in real time,” said Twitter VP and head of content partnerships Kay Madati. “That is our superpower.” NBCUniversal, the Walt Disney Company, Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer are among those ramping up their Twitter involvement. “Our ambition is to have every event that happens in the world, also happen on Twitter,” said Kayvon Beykpour, Twitter’s head of video.

First show to come out of the deal is He’s Still Out There, focused on an unsolved 2004 murder.

As true crime content continues to draw viewers, Half Yard Productions announced the launch of a new Crime and Investigation Unit, led by Sirens Media exec and veteran crime producer Anne S. ADVERTISING

Using the average annual revenue generated per employee, Pivotal Research Group ranked Omnicom the top holding company, at $194,000. Interpublic was second with $150,000, followed by WPP ($138,000), Publicis ($135,000) and Havas ($132,000). “Omnicom’s underlying margins for the same activities that peers perform are much higher than commonly perceived,” wrote Pivotal analyst Brian Wieser. “This suggests that high ‘teens margins are achievable, and, we think durable for companies in the sector, especially including U.S. peer Interpublic, which has a similar geographic footprint and which produced a 12.6% margin against net revenue during 2017.”

SpotX and Nielsen are collaborating to bring TV metrics to CTV by matching SpotX’s ad exposure data with Nielsen’s Panels. The offering allows SpotX to share campaign level audience measurement data with their clients, including insights on Reach, Frequency, and GRPs of CTV campaigns by Nielsen Demo, alongside those of traditional TV if part of the same campaign.

Research by the Association of National Advertisers’ #SeeHer movement, in collaboration with TiVo, demonstrates that ads that portray women accurately work better when paired with programming that also portrays women accurately. TiVo conducted advanced analyses using Gender Equality Measure (GEM) scores across select consumer packaged goods advertising and the programs they aired within, and ads with a high GEM score generated double-digit incremental sales per rating point post ad exposure, when they aired on shows that also had a high GEM score. “The foundation of the #SeeHer Movement is data,” said Stephen Quinn, Chair, #SeeHer. “Our research consistently proves that consumers reward the marketers who create advertising and support programming that accurately portrays women and girls. #SeeHer is good for business and good for society.”

DIGITAL DATA

Facebook is jumping into the dating game. During his keynote speech at Facebook’s F8 annual developer conference yesterday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the social media giant was launching dating features – and it won’t be “just for hookups.” Chief product officer Chris Cox explained the concept stemmed from couples who said meeting their partner was the most important thing Facebook had done for them. So now, Facebook aims to connect couples in a way that is opt-in, safe, “and didn’t get in the way of everyone who wasn’t interested in dating.”

Also at the F8 conference, Facebook’s Instagram said it will let other apps, including Spotify, share directly into Instagram Stories, and will roll out a new version of its Explore section to group posts by theme. Instagram will also let outsiders create AR effects for their followers using Facebook’s Camera Effects Platform; initial AR partners include the NBA, Vogue and BuzzFeed.

Apple posted quarterly earnings per share of $2.73, up 30% from a year ago and above analyst estimates of $2.67. As for sales of pricey iPhone X, which had some investors jittery, “Customers chose iPhone X more than any other iPhone each week in the March quarter, just as they did following its launch in the December quarter,” said CEO Tim Cook. “We also grew revenue in all of our geographic segments, with over 20% growth in Greater China and Japan.”

Less rosy was Snap Inc.’s quarterly report, which sent shares tumbling 17% in post-market trading. Snap’s revenue was $230.7 million, versus estimates of $244.9 million. “Revenue was $230.7 million in Q1 2018, up 54% year-over-year driven by growth in Snap Ads, and down 19% sequentially, primarily due to seasonality and our redesign,” said the company.

Digital media startup FlockU, created for college students and written by college students, is being acquired by brand management agency Becker Associates. “We’re thrilled to offer digital media and new content streams with strong integration opportunities to our licensees and partners,” said Becker CEO Patti Becker.  “Brands are looking for new content and ways to engage in a genuine way with their customers and become part of the conversations they’re having with each other. That authenticity is a key part of FlockU’s appeal and focus.”

Sling TV expanded its cloud DVR feature to work with more devices, supporting the Chrome brower, Chromecast, Xbox One, and some smart TVs. Subscribers can get the DVR for $5 more/month. Caveat: The recording feature is not available on some channels, including Disney’s.
