CBS scored the most Daytime Emmy nominations Thursday with 60, followed by 51 for syndicated shows, 44 for PBS, 37 for Nickelodeon, 30 for ABC and 24 for Hub. CBS soap The Young and the Restless grabbed 26 noms; The Ellen DeGeneres Show was tops in talkers, with nine nods. Competing against Ellen for entertainment talk show: syndicated Live! with Kelly & Michael and Rachael Ray, CBS‘s The Talk and ABC‘s The View. Nominees for Outstanding Drama series were Y&R, The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of Our Lives and defunct TOLN.com entry One Life to Live (left off the list: ABC‘s General Hospital). Sam Champion and NBC Sports‘ Josh Elliott reunite this morning on Champion’s The Weather Channel show, AMHQ. Both at Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby, the GMA alums are scheduled to dish Derby weather and cuisine, starting at 9a (weather permitting, of course).
Robert Wagner (Hart to Hart) and his wife, Jill St. John will play Mr. and Mrs. Claus in Hallmark Channel‘s Northpole. The holiday movie from Muse Entertainment, premiering Saturday, November 15 at 8p, is a collaboration between the net and Crown Media cousin Hallmark Cards.
Cable customer service was no easy task to begin with, but multiple devices makes it even more challenging, lamented execs on the “Meet the New Consumer” panel at The Cable Show 2014 in LA. “This evolution in the amount of content has grown so fast, much faster than the tools we give customers to navigate through all of it,” said Sam Schwartz, chief business development officer at Comcast Cable. The goal? Making sure viewers can easily find content, “even at 2:17 when you can’t sleep,” said Michael Quigley, VP of business development and multiplatform distribution at Turner Broadcasting.
Not so fast, said California regarding expanded film and television subsidies. On Wednesday, the state’s legislative analyst issued a report saying that while more generous subsidies are likely luring production away from California, the legislature should proceed with caution, “since responding to other jurisdictions’ subsidies could be very expensive.”
Add Cox to the list of operators offering Showtime Internet video service Showtime Anytime. Cox customers who subscribe to Showtime now have on demand access to hundreds of hours of Showtime programming on a range of mobile devices.
Litton Entertainment was pleased to have partnered in 11 Daytime Emmy noms, including the Born to Explore with Richard Wiese and Ocean Mysteries with Jeff Corwin honors. “I salute the dedication of Litton’s team and partners and their commitment to programming that is resonating with millions of families every week,” Dave Morgan, Litton founder and CEO, tells Cynopsis.
Food and drink site The Daily Meal announced plans to launch an original television series, in partnership with Ubiquimedia. A pilot has been shot and will go to market this month. Per comScore’s latest multi-platform report, The Daily Meal drew an all-time high of 7.3 million monthly unique visitors.
Stephen Hawking and his daughter, Lucy Hawking are working with Nerd Corps Entertainment to develop a TV show based on their George Greenby book series, looking at science through the eyes of an 11-year-old. Pure Grass Films will exec produce and distribute.
HBO greenlit a movie based on the life of blues singer Bessie Smith, to star Queen Latifah. HBO Films will produce in association with Flavor Unit Entertainment and the Zanuck Company.
Highlights from PBS‘s summer lineup include Brazil with Michael Palin on Monday and Tuesday, June 9-10 at 9p. Masterpiece Mystery!‘s “The Escape Artist” starts Sunday, June 15 at 9p with David Tennant (Dr. Who), and season 27 of POV launches Monday, June 23 at 10p. Three-part forensic history show Time Scanners premieres Tuesday, July 1 at 8p.
Fried peanut-butter-and jelly fish stick, anyone? Spike culinary competition Frankenfood shows the best and worst efforts of amateur chefs starting Sunday, June 8 at 10p.
Bike builders on a $15,000 budget compete to construct the motorcycle that will most impress America in Discovery‘s #BikerLive, premiering Monday, May 12 at 10p. It’s the first time the net will turn to Twitter to determine a winner.
A&E promises a “killer finale” to Bates Motel, Monday, May 5 at 10p. Season two wraps with Norma trying to save Norman from making a horrible mistake, followed by Bates Motel: After Hours at 11p.
TLC spinoff series Return to Amish launches Sunday, June 1 at 9p, following the crew from Breaking Amish, TLC‘s highest-rated freshman series ever.
Starz original drama Power premieres on Encore and Encore Espanol Sunday, June 8 at 10p, and on Encore Black at 11p, the day after its Starz network premiere.
Documentary David Ortiz in the Moment, offering a close-up look at the larger-than-life Boston Red Sox star, makes its television premiere on EPIX Thursday, July 17 at 8p.
TV Land’s Hot in Cleveland has been renewed for a 24-episode sixth season, announced net president Larry W. Jones during a rehearsal for the comedy’s 100th episode. The cast celebrated, of course, with selfie. Season five airs Wednesdays at 10p.
Children’s Hospital has been picked up by Adult Swim for a sixth season, returning in 2015. The comedy launched as a web series for TheWB.com in 2008.
Michael McKean (Spinal Tap) will co-star on Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul. Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks are already onboard the AMC comedy in their Bad roles.
USA thriller Dig added Regina Taylor (The Unit), David Costabile (Breaking Bad) and Omar Metwally (Non-Stop) in recurring roles. The Universal Cable Productions six-ep event series is slated for a fall 2014 premiere.
Nestor Serrano (CSI Miami) and Brit Morgan (True Blood) will recur on season two of USA‘s Graceland, returning Wednesday, June 11 at 10p.
Syndication is outperforming networks in Prime, according to an SNTA presentation on syndication’s C3 ratings this season, pointing to a 2.8 A18-49 C3 rating for the top 5 syndie programs, and 2.2 for the top ten.
Content Media Corporation announced a first look agreement with leading U.K. indie KEO Films Limited. The companies will jointly develop scripted material, with Content having first look distribution rights to represent the programming internationally.
Viacom International Media announced an agreement to acquire U.K.’s Channel 5 Broadcasting for $757 million. “This deal will dramatically increase Viacom’s investment in content produced in the U.K., which has a widely admired public service broadcasting culture and a globally influential production sector,” said Channel 5 COO Paul Dunthorne.
Canal 22 Internacional is marking its 10th anniversary with May programming under the banner “A Reflection of Our Traditions,” kicking off May 5 with Guelaguetza 2013 at 7a. Music special Experienca Acustica: Eugenia Leon, featuring the Mexican singer, airs at 1p. Canal 22 provides its signal from Mexico to the U.S. Hispanic population.
It’s all relative. Modern Family saw a season low Wednesday of 2.8/8, but was still the night’s highest-rated program for the seventh consecutive original airing.
ABC‘s Nightline drew 1.56 million total viewers, 635,000 A25-54 and 490,000 A18-49 for the week of April 21, according to Nielsen, ranking number one in total viewers for the second week in a row and third time in the last 4 weeks.The news show outdrew NBC‘s Late Night with Seth Meyers by its largest total viewer margin ever (+48,000) during a week of original telecasts.
April was the strongest ratings month ever for UP, with a slate of bible movies including The Passion of the Christ, and UP original movie Apple Mortgage Cake. For the month, UP averaged a primetime coverage rating of 0.37 (321,000 P2+ average audience) and a total day HH coverage rating of 0.21 (173,000 P2+). “Our ‘Easter Lives Here’ programming stunt made April a milestone month for us,” Sophia Kelley, SVP, programming, tells Cynopsis. “We have some strong movies on tap for the coming months and a new season of Heartland that we believe will build on our early spring ratings momentum.”

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: CBS won the most A18-49 viewers Wednesday with 2.1/6, according to Nielsen. CBS’s Survivor was first at 8p with 2.3/7, versus 1.8/6 for Fox’s American Idol. CBS stayed in the lead at 9p with 2.2/6 for Criminal minds, followed by a 2.1/6 average for Modern Family and Mixology. NBC stepped into first at 10p with 1.9/6 for Chicago PD, versus 1.7/5 for CBS’s CSI.
