The CW gave series orders to “Naomi,” based on the DC character, and spin-off “All American: Homecoming.” Its “Powerpuff” pilot, inspired by animated series “The Powerpuff Girls,” is being reworked off-cycle. “Naomi” is produced by ARRAY in association with Warner Bros. Television; “All American: Homecoming,” from Berlanti Productions in association with WBTV, will air as a backdoor pilot on the July 5 episode of “All American.”

Robin Thede’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show” landed a season three renewal from HBO, days ahead of its season two finale. “Robin continues to break new ground in the world of sketch comedy. She delivered a hilariously sharp second season,” said Amy Gravitt, EVP, HBO Comedy Programming.

Amazon is close to a deal to acquire studio MGM Holdings for close to $9 billion including debt, reports the Wall Street Journal. MGM, owned by a groupf of investors led by Anchorage Capital, was valued at $5.5 billion last year. The deal would give Amazon Prime Video a massive library for streaming.

Late night’s getting more personal. CBS’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” will return to filming in front of full-capacity, live (vaccinated) audiences on June 14. “Over the last 437 days, my staff and crew (and family!) have amazed me with their professionalism and creativity as we made shows for an audience we couldn’t see or hear,” said Colbert. “I look forward to once again doing shows for an audience I can smell and touch.”

Fox News Channel has named network contributor and “Fox Nation” host Rachel Campos-Duffy as co-host of “Fox & Friends Weekend,” replacing Jedediah Bila, starting Saturday, June 12. Bila’s exit was announced on Friday. Additionally, Lawrence Jones has taken on a new position as enterprise reporter for the “Fox & Friends” franchise, and will continue to fill in as co-host of both the weekday and weekend editions of the show.

Facing criticism for AT&T’s content strategy, which included the $108.7 billion it cost the company to buy Time Warner (renamed WarnerMedia) in 2018, versus the $43 billion it will get to sell it to Discovery now, CEO John Stankey said, “What’s become clear is that the opportunity for direct relationships with customers in media is truly going to be a global opportunity, and our connectivity business, as you know, is capped into the United States.” At a J.P. Morgan virtual conference, Stankey said the thinking behind buying Time Warner was that it would help the domestic connectivity business, adding, “We got a long way down that path and made a lot of good progress.”

Amazon/BBC’s “Small Axe” won the most awards – five – at the BAFTA TV Craft Awards, while HBO/BBC’s “I May Destroy You” took home three biggies – director, fiction; editing, fiction; and writer, drama. “Small Axe” went into the ceremony with nine nominations, versus five for “I May Destroy You.”

Lee Daniels and his Lee Daniels Entertainment have extended a deal with 20th Television that includes series orders for ABC’s reboot of “The Wonder Years” and Fox’s “Our Kind of People.” “I’m beyond grateful to continue my partnership with 20th, Dana Walden, Karey Burke and their amazing team, all of whom have wholeheartedly supported my vision over the past seven years,” said Daniels. “LDE has so many exciting projects in the works from some of today’s most fresh and distinct voices that I cannot wait to share with the world.”

Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“3rd Rock From the Sun”) is set to play Uber’s former CEO, Travis Kalanick, in “Super Pumped,” an anthology series ordered by Showtime. Brian Koppelman and David Levien (“Billions”) and Beth Schacter (“Soundtrack”) will executive produce, write and serve as showrunners on the series. Paul Schiff, Stephen Schiff and Allyce Ozarski will executive produce and Isaac will co-executive produce the project, part of Koppelman and Levien’s overall deal with Showtime.

Robert Pattinson (“Tenet”) inked a first-look production deal with Warner Bros. Pictures, New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Television and HBO Max for theatrical, streaming and WBTV properties. “We have been incredibly impressed with Rob’s eye for identifying dynamic new filmmakers,” said Courtenay Valenti, President, Production and Development for Warner Bros Pictures, and Richard Brener, President & Chief Creative Officer of New Line Cinema. “Additionally, he is continually nurturing exciting story ideas into compelling screenplays.”

Apple’s eight-part thriller “Shining Girls,” based on the 2013 novel by Lauren Beukes, will be directed by Michelle McLaren (“Breaking Bad”), series star Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) and Daina Reid (“The Handmaid’s Tale”). The series comes form MRC Television.

Playwright Nathan Alan Davis will write a scripted limited series inspired by the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, for MTV Entertainment Studios and Bassett Vance Productions. The series will be the first dramatic adaptation of the story of Greenwood district in Tulsa, which at that time was the wealthiest Black community in the United States and known as “Black Wall Street.” “We have the privilege of shining a light on a devastating event in our history that is important, necessary and still resonates 100 years later,” said Nina L. Diaz, President of Content and Chief Creative Officer at MTV Entertainment Group. “This partnership underscores our shared commitment to raise diverse voices and create content our global audience is yearning for that is both timely and telling.”

In more MTV Entertainment Studios news, production for “Mayor of Kingstown” is underway for Paramount+. Currently filming in Toronto, the series from Taylor Sheridan (“Yellowstone”) tackles themes of systemic racism, corruption and inequality.

Casting notes: Lindsay Lohan will star as a spoiled heiress who gets amnesia in an untitled, holiday-themed romantic comedy for Netflix… Jessica Rothe (“Happy Death Day”) and Kelsey Asbille (“Yellowstone”) will star in “Gaslight,” a TV series based on the QCODE podcast from studio New Regency…William Abadie has been upped from recurring to series regular in season two of Netflix’s “Emily in Paris,” while Lucien Laviscount (“Screem Queens”) joins in a recurring role…Also elevated to series regulars from recurring are Noah Galvin and Bria Samone Henderson, on “The Good Doctor.”

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Resolving financial disputes is the focus of “Money Court,” premiering Wednesday, August 11 at 10p on CNBC. Kevin O’Leary (“Shark Tank”) presides over cases with trial attorney Katie Phang and former Judge Ada Pozo.

Cheddar jumps into prime time programming with weeknight talk show “None of the Above with J.D. Durkin,” premiering Monday, June 7 at 8p. “Cheddar News is set to enter the primetime cable news landscape with an offering for viewers that are searching for an alternative to the usual cable news pundits and opinion shows,” said Peter Gorenstein, Chief Content Officer, Cheddar News.

IMDb TV snapped up canceled UK ITV2 comedy “Timewasters,” about a time-traveling jazz band. A US version of the show is in development ABC.

The fifth and final season of Netflix hit “La Casa De Papel” (“Money Heist”) will be released in two five-episode volumes, one launching September 3, and the next on December 3. What to expect from the addictive Spanish crime drama” “When we began to write Part 5 in the midst of the pandemic, we felt that we had to change what was expected from the 10-episode season and used every tool we could to create the sensation of a season finale or series finale in the first volume itself,” said Álex Pina, the series creator. “We decided to work in an extremely aggressive genre, putting The Gang on the ropes.”

HLN’s “Murder Nation,” an investigation docu-series focused on deadly crimes that are unique to particular locales in the US, kicks off Sunday, June 13 at 9p with “Blood on the Bayou.”

Season six of “The Real Housewives of the Potomac” premieres Sunday, July 11 at 8p, with a supersized episode and a new housewife in the mix.

“The Shop: Interrupted” is back for season four on Friday, May 28 at 9:30p on HBO. Joining LeBron James and Maverick Carter for the season premiere are music mogul Jay-Z; rapper, singer and songwriter Bad Bunny; WNBA star Nneka Ogwumike; and marketing executive Paul Rivera.

Mysterious objects that have confounded experts for years get another look in new Science Channel series, “Strangest Things,” debuting Thursday, May 27 at 10p.

HGTV’s “Celebrity IOU” returns Monday, June 21 at 9p, with Hollywood stars working alongside Drew and Jonathan Scott to renovate the homes of special people in their lives.

In “Kevin Hart’s Muscle Car Crew,” the comedian and his friends go full throttle to face the challenges of owning classic vehicles starting Friday, July 2 on the Motor Trend App.

A special episode of Nat Geo’s “Wicked Tuna” has the competing captains teaming with nonprofit Wounded Warrior Project. Veterans are invited to help reel in bluefin, and the proceeds from their catches are donated to Wounded Warrior.

Yahoo Finance will mark the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s death with “George Floyd: One Year Later,” part of weekly series “A Time for Change,” today at 1p.

Season two of History Channel podcast “Blindspot” focuses on the racial terror that destroyed the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma one hundred years ago this Memorial Day. “Blindspot: Tulsa Burning” will be available Friday, May 28.

Armoza Formats announced that scripted comedy “La Famiglia” has been licensed in Ukraine. The local rights to the format have been taken by NOVY with 16 episodes of the series set to air.

BBC Studios and Disney announced that a third season of “Bluey” will premiere globally on Disney Channel, Disney Junior, and Disney+ in all territories outside of Australia, New Zealand, and China.
