Consumers aren’t just interacting with content on social media – 87% of have engaged with an ad on social platforms in the last 12 months, according to the IAS report, “The State of Social.” The study also found 25% of consumers have noticed an increasing volume of unsafe content on social media in the past year, and 46% say the growth of fake news has made them less trusting of ads on social media feeds. Asked who they hold accountable for ads appearing near unsafe content, 61% of respondents blamed the platforms, while 35% pointed brands/advertisers.

Omnicom announced the formation of Omnicom Advertising Group, aligning creative networks BBDO, DDB, TBWA, as well as agencies within the Advertising Collective including Goodby Silverstein & Partners, GSD&M, Merkley & Partners and Zimmerman. OAG will be led by Troy Ruhanen as Global CEO, Deepthi Prakash as Chief Operating Officer and Denis Streiff as Global CFO. “OAG will make the best even better. One of the most exciting parts of this new division is that we can collectively invest in innovative offerings – such as Omnicom’s recent first-mover partnerships in GenAI,” said Ruhanen. “This will take our world-class creativity to the next level and keep our clients at the top of their industries.”

The estate of Michael Crichton (“ER,” “Westworld”) has filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. Television, John Wells, Noah Wyle and R. Scott Gemmill, accusing them of Breach of Contract, Breach of Implied Covenant of Good Faith and Fair Dealing, and Intentional Interference With Contractual Relations, reports Deadline. The lawsuit alleges the group walked away from negotiations to make a sequel to “ER,” only to shift the action to a hospital in Pittsburgh for “The Pitt,” which got a straight-to-series order from Max. The plaintiffs claim that a “frozen rights” provision Crichton had secured before his death “prohibits WBTV from proceeding with any sequels, remakes, spinoffs, or other derivative productions based on ‘ER’ without Crichton’s express consent.”

Paramount Global will proceed with a merger deal with Skydance Media now that a group led by Edgar Bronfman Jr. has rescinded a last minute offer that triggered a “go-shop” period. “Having thoroughly explored actionable opportunities for Paramount over nearly eight months, our Special Committee continues to believe that the transaction we have agreed with Skydance delivers immediate value and the potential for continued participation in value creation in a rapidly evolving industry landscape,” said Charles E. Phillips, Jr., Chair of the Paramount committee overseeing the process. Said Bronfman, “While there may have been differences, we believe that everyone involved in the sale process is united in the belief that Paramount’s best days are ahead. We congratulate the Skydance team and thank the special committee and the Redstone family for their engagement during the go-shop process.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Apple TV+’s bilingual comedy “Acapulco” will return for a fourth season in 2025. “Having Apple order a fourth season of ‘Acapulco’ is beyond thrilling,” said star and executive producer Eugenio Derbez. “It’s rare for shows centered on Latino stories to make it this far, and that makes this milestone even more meaningful.”

OUTtv has commissioned a male-stripper reality competition series, “Willam’s Dark Room Duel,” hosted by Willam Belli (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”). The series is produced by Daddy TV and enters production in October 2024.

AMC Networks announced the start of production on the third season of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” in Spain. Season three, set to debut in 2025, will be based in Madrid with location shooting planned in the Galicia, Aragón, Catalonia and Valencia regions. Production begins ahead of the series’ season two premiere on Sunday, September 29 on AMC.

Amazon is reportedly considering selling MGM Alternative (“The Voice,” “Survivor,” “Vanderpump Rules”). The production company was part of Amazon’s $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM Studios in 2022.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Season three of “NFL Tuesday Night Gaming” will debut on Tuesday, September 3 with a new show format. “We’re excited to showcase a revamped format that will capture even more fun moments between top gaming creators and NFL players,” said Ed Kiang, VP of Video Gaming at the NFL. “Collaborating with Enthusiast Gaming has enabled the NFL to deepen its reach across the gaming community and we expect season three to be our most popular yet.”

Prime Video has ordered “The Pasta Queen” from Hello Sunshine. The series, starring TikTok star Caterina Munno, will premiere Thursday, October 24. “Nadia has built an engaged and loyal social media presence through her unique and stylized celebration of her Italian culture and the meals around which her family is built,” said Lauren Anderson, head of Brand and Content Innovation, Amazon MGM Studios.

Nordic noir “End of Summer” makes its US debut Tuesday, September 10 on Viaplay.

Titus Burgess (“Schmigadoon!”) will host Food Network competition series “Last Bite Hotel,” premiering Tuesday, September 24 at 9p.

COMING UP

“Elton John: Never Too Late” premieres Friday, December 13 on Disney+. The documentary follows Elton John as he looks back on his life as he prepares for his final concert in North America at Dodger Stadium. Before it starts streaming, the film will have a limited theatrical run on November 15 in the US and UK.

Anitta, Karol G, LL Cool J and Shawn Mendes have joined the roster of performers at the 2024 “VMAs,” airing Wednesday, September 11 at 8p on MTV.

“Sweethearts’” debuts Thursday, November 28 on Max. The film follows two college freshmen who make a pact to break up with their high school sweethearts over Thanksgiving break.

ESPN’s latest 30 for 30 documentary, “Stolen Gold,” debuts Tuesday, September 17 at 9p on ESPN. The film delves into the story of Ramón Torres and the Spanish intellectually disabled basketball team’s dramatic journey to the gold medal at the Sydney Paralympics in 2000.

PBS is marking Hispanic Heritage Month with new episodes of “Alma’s Way” on PBS KIDS, PBS’s second primetime Spanish-language drama, “Velvet,” new documentaries from American Masters and VOCES, a musical celebration with Next at the Kennedy Center, and the broadcast of the 37th Hispanic Heritage Awards.

Rita Moreno, Ben Vereen and Hayley and Juliet Mills are among the celebs who will set sail with the 2024 TCM Classic Cruise from October 26-31.

Dabl Network is offering a marathon of 24 episodes of “The Parkers” starting Sunday, September 1 at 6a. The binge marks the 25th anniversary of the debut of the “Moesha” spinoff.

Filmmaker and stand-up comedian W. Kamau Bell is set to host the 45th Annual Documentary Emmy Awards on Thursday, September 26. In addition to announcing winners in 65 news and documentary-related Emmy Awards categories, NATAS will induct new members into the Gold and Silver Circle.

National Geographic is expanding its digital offerings. The first in a series of social strategy changes is the launch of its fourth YouTube Channel, Nat Geo En Espanol. “Growing our YouTube presence to include a dedicated Spanish-language channel is the latest example of how National Geographic as a brand is increasing engagement and visibility in the social space,” said Tulani André, VP of Social Media at National Geographic. “This launch is just the start of an exciting rollout planned throughout the remainder of the year.”

CNN International is expanding to 22 territories on Max this week. It’s already available in France and Poland.

Hyperlocal streamer Zeam just launched a new hub, Swing State Election News, providing viewers access to events on the campaign trail in swing states as captured by broadcast news stations based in those locales. The hub will feature broadcasts from Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvanian and Wisconsin.

Waypoint TV, home to fishing, hunting and outdoor adventure programming, has launched on TCLtv+.

TECH

DirecTV InFlight, a distributor of content in the commercial aviation industry, has launched an IPTV service for business aviation in collaboration with Satcom Direct, the business aviation solutions provider. The media streaming technology offers business aviation customers access to live TV programming, hardware-free, allowing passengers to access media directly through the plane’s Wi-Fi network.

Intersport and State Farm have agreed to a sponsorship that makes State Farm the title sponsor of the State Farm Women’s College Volleyball Showcase, a new event set for Sunday and Monday at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. “State Farm is one of the most recognizable brands in the world, known for its passionate commitment to protecting its customers and their families, dreams and aspirations,” said Mark Starsiak, VP at Intersport. “They have been an ardent supporter of college athletics for decades and we are eager to bring their brand to a national volleyball audience.”

Warner Bros. Discovery and independent Spanish animation company Ánima Kitchent have partnered for the second season of preschool series “Cuquin.” The 3D adventure comedy series is slated to premiere in mid 2025 on Max and Cartoonito in Latin America.

The third episode in season three of HBO’s “Industry” drew 370,000 cross-platform viewers on Sunday, up from 300,000 for the drama’s season premiere, which has now reached 1.4 million viewers.

Collecting 2.3 million viewers for its premiere episode, “Chimp Crazy” became HBO’s most-watched docuseries in four years, after 2020’s “McMillions.”

Spectrum News averaged 1.7 million daily viewing households across its linear and digital platforms in August. In Florida, Spectrum Bay News 9 (Tampa Bay) was the most-watched news network in full-day viewership as the region felt the impacts of Hurricane Debby on August 4 and 5. Bay News 9 saw a significant viewership increase of 231% on August 4 and 133% increase on August 5.
