IN THE NEWS
HBO Max will debut its long-touted ad-supported tier the first week of June, offering the service at $9.99 per month, $5 less than the ad-free version it debuted a year ago. During the WarnerMedia upfront, ad sales chief JP Colaco told advertisers the AVOD service would have “the lightest ad load in the streaming industry, coupled with the most premium content.” He said the company has sealed commitments from “most major agencies and brands, across a diverse array of categories.”
Showtime announced Hip Hop 50, a multiyear, cross-platform programming initiative celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip hop. In collaboration with entertainment company Mass Appeal, Hip Hop 50 comprises unscripted series and features, podcasts and digital shorts by and about some of the foremost names in the genre. Mass Appeal partner Nasir “Nas” Jones and chief creative officer Sacha Jenkins, writer, director and producer of Showtime series “Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men,” are leading the initiative.
Talent from HBO Max’s “It’s a Sin,” VH1’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and OWN’s “David Makes Man” will take the stage at the inaugural OutFronts, a new five-day virtual fest that seeks to connect fans with their favorite queer TV content and stars. The event runs June 4-8 on the OutFest Now streaming app and will provide free panels as well as members-only premieres and episode previews. Also on the lineup is The CW’s LGBTQ Superhero Panel, featuring “Batwoman‘s” Javicia Leslie and “Supergirl’s” Chyler Leigh and Nicole Maines.

UPFRONTS NEWS
Days after merger news rippled across the industry, WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar addressed AT&T’s $43 billion deal with Discovery in a clearly hastily added video during the company’s Upfront presentation. “Together we will form a new company super-serving our advertisers with the promise to unite WarnerMedia’s brands with Discovery’s brands all under one banner,” said the executive, who reportedly is already working with a legal team to negotiate his exit package. “While there is still so much more to come and for the moment it’s still business as usual, we wanted to take a moment and thank you for your continued partnership.”
Back to the present, WarnerMedia announced TBS and TNT this summer will launch Front Row, a limited-commercial viewing destination where original programming and shows originally made for sister HBO Max will air. Max Originals “Love Life,” “Close Enough,” “12 Dates of Christmas,” “Titans” and “Class Action Park” will be among first films out of the gate, as will season 1 of “The Flight Attendant.” The Kaley Cuoco starrer will return to TBS in 2022 ahead of its second season premiere on HBO Max. TBS also is debuting Friday Night Vibes, a movie showcase hosted by comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish.
Also launching on Front Row on TNT will be “Rich People Problems” (wt), which reveals the untold true stories of greed, power and betrayal that lie beneath the facade of the wealthy and famous. The series hails from Raw TV, the production company behind “Three Identical Strangers” and Netflix’s “Don’t F*** With Cats.”
The “TNets” (TBS, TNT and truTV) announced summer premieres of “Impractical Jokers: The Movie” and season 9 (truTV), “Animal Kingdom” season 5 (TNT), and “Miracle Workers” season 3 (TBS), as well as second season renewals for freshman series “Wipeout,” “Fast Foodies” and “Chad.” TNT’s Niecy Nash-starring “Claws” is headed into its final chapter, but TBS/TNT/truTV chief Brett Weitz promised a “fulfilling” ending. “It’s exactly what Desna and her band would want you to see,” he said. TNT also will debut four new pro wrestling specials annually as part of a deal with All Elite Wrestling. Last year AEW extended its relationship with WarnerMedia through 2023.
At CNN, a swath of series are in the works including “Patagonia,” “Nomad with Carlton McCoy,” Dark Was the Night: The Life of Hitler,” “LBJ: Triumph and Tragedy” and “Reframed: Marilyn Monroe.” The network is renewing “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy,” “This is Life with Lisa Ling” and “United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell.” “Dreamland: The Burning of Black Wall Street,” “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain,” “LFG” and “Lady Boss: The Jackie Collins Story,” are on the CNN Films slate.
ViacomCBS ended the Upfront day touting its gamut of brand touch points and simplified, unified advertising solutions including premium ad platform ViacomCBS EyeQ Video, multicultural marketing solutions to help advertisers achieve DE&I goals, custom branded programming, live events, influencer and shopper marketing solutions, and its “InView” reporting platform, which provides a holistic overview of campaign performance. “We’re giving marketers the ability to leverage the full scale and power of our brands and businesses with the broadest set of leading data-driven advertising capabilities and creative marketing solutions across every platform,” said Jo Ann Ross, president and chief advertising revenue office, ViacomCBS Domestic Advertising Sales. “We have exceptional content for everyone, everywhere across our expansive ecosystem.”
On the content front, the company debuted its fall primetime schedule. At CBS that includes extensions of network hits franchises, and a new comedy, “Ghosts,” based on a BBC series about the new inhabitants of an estate and the spirits who share their living space. Upcoming are three iterations of “FBI,” including the new “FBI: International”; three versions of “NCIS,” with newcomer “NCIS: Hawaii” replacing outgoing “NCIS: New Orleans,” and the return of the “CSI” franchise with “CSI: Vegas.” “Survivor” will be back for a 41st run, and “The Amazing Race” is expected to return for season 33 providing filming can resume in time.
