Elon Musk has named Linda Yaccarino, who until Friday was chairman of global advertising at NBCUniversal, as CEO of Twitter. Yaccarino “will focus primarily on business operations, while I focus on product design & new technology,” tweeted Musk. Yaccarino saw a surge of Twitter followers after the new broke. “I’m not as prolific as @elonmusk (yet!), but I’m just as committed to the future of this platform,” she tweeted. Musk addressed worries that courting advertisers could lead to freedom of speech being curtailed. “I hear your concerns, but don’t judge to early,” he posted. “I am adamant about defending free speech, even if it means losing money.”

Netflix plans to cut spending by $300 million this year, reports the Wall Street Journal, to make up for delays in its crackdown on password sharing. But while staffers have been encouraged to be sensible with their spending, $300 million is a small slice of the company’s operating expenses, which were $26 billion last year.

TikTok and musicians Jonas Brothers, Miguel and Niall Horan have teamed to launch a global music discovery hub. #NewMusic will showcase new music content from artists on TikTok, including early previews.

Google released MusicLM, an AI tool that can turn text descriptions into music. The experimental tool is available in the AI Test Kitchen app.

ADVERTISING

Meta announced an AI Sandbox for advertisers. “Our goal is to learn what works for advertisers and make these features easy to use in our ads tools,” said the company in a blog post. “To start, we are building tools like text variation, background generation and image outcropping to do things like make an ad’s text more engaging or improve parts of its creative.”

Quantcast and FreeWheel formed a new partnership that gives marketers working with Quantcast access to premium programmatic video supply across all personal screens and devices, including OTT and CTV. “Our company has been at the forefront of using AI to interpret media consumption patterns and deliver campaign performance and outcomes,” said Konrad Feldman, CEO, Quantcast. “By teaming up with FreeWheel, we can better support our advertisers to reach consumers across even more engagement and connection points.”

PubMatic has launched Activate, a technology that enables buyers to access premium video and CTV inventory on Pubmatic’s programmatic platform via direct deals. “Buyers and sellers of digital media are seeking a more efficient, transparent, and sustainable supply chain that delivers on programmatic’s full potential,” said PubMatic co-founder and CEO, Rajeev Goel. “By seamlessly connecting buyers and content owners via a single layer of technology, we are significantly reducing the hops, discrepancies, data proliferation, opacity, and complexity in the programmatic marketplace.” Launch partners include dentsu, GroupM, Havas, LG, Mars and Omnicom Media Group Germany.

Cairns Oneil announced the launch of a new ad format leveraging ChatGPT and dynamic creative. Launched within a programmatic campaign for its client, Rakuten Kobo, the dynamic ad unit leverages ChatGPT and Adform’s DCO to dynamically generate and optimize headlines using artificial intelligence in banner ads. The dynamic ad unit is built in layers, sending prompts to ChatGPT to automatically create headlines; if an ad isn’t successful after going into market, ChatGPT will discard the headline and generate a new one.

Teads unveiled insights on attention metrics that tie Conde Nast’s premium environments with significantly higher attention levels. The analysis, in collaboration with Adelaide, looked at 1,000 domains and revealed Condé Nast’s portfolio of brands scored over 50% higher in display and video attention levels relative to Teads’ publisher benchmark. Additionally, Condé Nast’s Vogue held the highest attention score among all publishers in the analysis, approaching Teads’ CTV benchmark which is currently 67% higher than the Teads-Adelaide video benchmark and 103% higher than the display benchmark.

Programmatic media partner MiQ announced a new shopper intelligence solution, Consumer Link. Consumer Link integrates permissioned transaction, media consumption, geo-contextual, and behavioral data into a data spine allowing marketers to create campaigns that are more personalized.

Disney plans to combine content from Hulu and Disney+ into a “one-app experience” by the end of the year, announced CEO Bob Iger. “While we will continue to offer Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ as standalone options, this is a logical progression of our [direct-to-consumer] offerings that will provide greater opportunities for advertisers while giving bundle subscribers access to more robust and streamlined content, resulting in greater audience engagement and ultimately leading to a more unified streaming experience,” said the CEO.

Captify, the search intelligence platform for the open web, announced its integration with content data platform IRIS.TV. Marketers will now be able to use Captify to target relevant, brand-suitable video inventory across IRIS-enabled premium publishers and billions of monthly video impressions.

Vizrt, focused on real-time graphics and live production solutions for content creators, announced the availability of three new products: Viz Flowics, Viz Data Connectors, and Viz Social after integrating Flowics’ unique offerings into the wider Vizrt product portfolio. “Content creation is a fast-moving and fascinating realm that is continuously changing,” said Tehseen Akhtar, Deputy Global Head of Product Management. “By creating these new products post our acquisition of Flowics, we have optimized our end-to-end graphics portfolio.”

ITV Studios and Virtual Brand Group are launching “The Voice Studios.” The immersive metaverse experience based on the NBC series enables fans to create their own music, show off their dance moves, compete in battles, test their musical knowledge and audition to be on an upcoming season of “The Voice.” The initiative is timed to showcase in the final weeks of the NBC series’ 23rd season.

DraftKings launched a 24/7 network on Samsung TV Plus. “DKN” is the first-of-its-kind, making DraftKings the first US sportsbook to debut a FAST channel on the platform. “In bringing together some of the most authentic sports and entertainment voices under one umbrella, DraftKings Network is the destination for ‘In on the Action’ sports fans and content they love,” said Stacie McCollum, VP, content at DraftKings. “We look forward to reaching fans with our deep roster of independent, credible and relatable voices that resonate with sports fans and the sports betting community.” The network will also be available as a video-stream on DraftKingsNetwork.com.

OUTtv launched a LGBTQ+ channel on Amazon Prime Video US. As an add-on to Prime Video subscribers for an additional $3.99 per month, with a seven-day free trial, the channel is an extension of the network’s partnership with the streamer in Canada and Australia, where OUTtv has been available since 2021. Selected titles include Stormy Daniels-hosted gay dating reality series “For the Love of DILFs,” “Hot Haus” and “Behind the Drag Queen of the Year Pageant Competition Award Contest Competition.”

MEASUREMENT

The Media Rating Council has granted MRI-Simmons continuing accreditation, along with a new accreditation for its Insights Platform. The continuing accreditation is for MRI-Simmons Doublebase USA study and its MEMRI application, data use by planners to make allocation decisions for various media. Newly accredited Insights Platform reduces the time planners, advertisers and media sellers spend on data analysis and consumer insights generation.

CTV now accounts for 51% of global video impression share, an increase of 10.9% compared to 2021, with mobile and desktop steadily declining year over year, according to a new report by Innovid. “In 2019, CTV accounted for just 31% of total impression share by device,” said Dave Helmreich, Chief Commercial Officer at Innovid. “Today, it accounts for over half of all video impressions – and that share is already up another 3 percentage points in Q1 2023. As TV viewership continues to shift towards streaming, the share of CTV impressions will only continue to grow – and this trend is evident as Upfront buys continue to flow towards CTV inventory.”

DoubleVerify reports 39% growth in CTV measurement volumes during the first quarter, significantly exceeding the 14% CTV revenue growth rate projected for the industry in 2023, according to research from IAB. “Advertiser interest and investment in CTV has been growing,” said Dan Slivjanovski, CMO, DoubleVerify. “Eager to combine the measurability of digital video with the appeal of sight, sound and motion on the biggest living room screen, brands are paying top dollar to reach consumers via this medium.”
