IN THE NEWS
NBC has canceled plans to air the 2022 Golden Globes awards ceremony, an event tarnished by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s ethics issues and lack of diversity. “We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform,” stated the network. “However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right…we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.” Amazon Studios, Netflix and WarnerMedia had earlier said they would not cooperate with the Globes until the organization instituted more significant changes than have been announced so far.
ABC has renewed medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” for season 18, and ordered season five of “Grey’s” spin-off “Station 19.” Krista Vernoff will stay put as executive producer and showrunner of both series. “‘Station 19’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ have done an incredible job of honoring real-life heroes by giving audiences an unflinching look at one of the biggest medical stories of our time,” said Craig Erwich, President, Hulu Originals & ABC Entertainment. “Krista and her team of writers have continued to deliver the compelling and compassionate storytelling that is a hallmark of these shows, and created some of the year’s most-talked-about moments in television.” Protracted contract negotiations ended with “Grey’s” stars Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. signing on for the new season.
Tegna reported record first quarter results that included total company revenue of $727 million, up 6% year-over-year, driven by continued growth in subscription revenue and record first quarter advertising and marketing services revenues. Revenue was up 41% from the first quarter of 2019 driven by the same factors, as well as the impact of acquisitions. Revenues of Premion, Tegna’s OTT advertising business, were up more than 50 %year-over-year in the first quarter.
The Media Rating Council’s Television Committee met with Nielsen management yesterday to determine the impact to viewing estimates that may have resulted from Nielsen panel-related changes prompted by COVID-19. The MRC’s conclusion: Total Usage of Television by P18-49 was understated by approximately 2 to 6 percent for the February 2021 measurement period, and that Persons Using Television estimates among the P18-49 group was understated by a range of 1 to 5 percent. The MRC noted that estimates will vary among different demographic groups and dayparts, and percentage differences, when applied to program estimates, can be misleading because of the small size of the absolute ratings of many programs. MRC also noted that this range of impact are estimates with standard errors associated with them.
The Black-Owned Media Upfront kicks off today, May 11. “Every American and every corporation needs to lean in to make sure that we achieve the four ‘Es’ in our country – a great education for every American, economic inclusion for every American, equal justice for every American, and environmental protection for everyone,” said Byron Allen, Founder, Chairman & CEO of Allen Media Group, who has been leading the charge for economic inclusion.
In related news, GroupM said it plans to ask clients to commit to spending 2% of their annual budget on Black-owned media. The announcement follows IPG saying it plans to direct at least 5% of spending to Black-owned media by 2023. What does Byron Allen think of GroupM’s move? “I applaud GroupM’s efforts, but 2 percent is too skinny,” Allen tells Cynopsis. “They need to get to 5 percent.”
Laverne Cox (“Orange Is the New Black”) will take over E! red carpet duties from exiting host Giuliana Rancic. “Laverne Cox is a risk-taker, groundbreaking pioneer and a fashion tour de force,” said Jen Neal, EVP, Entertainment Live Events, Specials and E!News, NBCUniversal Television & Streaming. “As we continue to evolve the way we cover Hollywood’s biggest nights, Laverne’s passion for, and extensive knowledge of, the fashion community resonates with our audience.”
Fox renewed Mayim Bialik comedy “Call me Kat” for season two, but Darlene Hunt will not be back as executive producer/showrunner. The show’s season one finale drew 2.02 million viewers and an 0.5 rating among A18-49.
