Ahead of its Upfront, WarnerMedia is consolidating the international distribution and home entertainment operations of HBO, Turner and Warner Bros. under Jeffrey Schlesinger, president, Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution and Jim Wuthrich, president of Warner Bros. Worldwide Home Entertainment and Games, respectively. The move brings HBO Enterprises and Home Entertainment and the distribution of Turner’s US originals under Warner Bros. for the first time; previously HBO and Turner handled their own sales divisions.
Billy Bush is headed back to television. Nearly three years after the former NBC News/Today personality became ensnared in a scandal with Donald Trump, Bush is joining the new Extra Extra program when the show debuts this fall. Extra Extra is a reboot of the formerly syndicated Extra. “We all have to be able to evolve as we grow,” Bush told People. “I had the opportunity to grow up a little bit. Facing adversity in some way is good. And I feel I’ll be better at my job than I ever was. This is my next step.”
Fox bested Wall Street projections with its Q3 results, the company’s first as a leaner media company since Disney acquired 21st Century Fox. Excluding items, earnings per share came in at 76 cents, with revenue landing at $2.75 billion.
Meanwhile, Disney also surged beyond analyst projections, for the company’s Q2. Earnings per share came in at $1.61, with total revenue of $14.92 billion, nearly $400 million ahead of Wall Street’s prediction.
Epix will be available on a subscription basis to AT&T customers for $5.99 beginning Sunday, May 19, as part of a new distribution agreement that brings the net to AT&T’s streaming service DirecTV Now. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Untitled Cobie Smulders (formerly Stumptown), a graphic novel adaptation headlined by the Avengers co-star, landed ABC’s first new drama series pickup. Hailing from ABC Studios, which just signed an overall deal with series creator Jason Richman, the Cobie Smulders pilot was written by Richman and directed by James Griffiths and is based on the Stumptown graphic novel series that follows an assertive army veteran with a complicated love life, gambling debt, and a brother to take care of. She’s a great P.I., but her unapologetic style puts her in the firing line of hardcore criminals and not quite in alliance with the police. Series marks the return to television of the How I Met Your Mother alum.
Comedy Central is launching a new studio-production arm partnering with writers, producers and on-screen talent to develop premium comedy content and bring it to market via distribution partners and buyers on all TV and digital platforms. Comedy Central Productions debuts with first-look development deals in place with several companies: Paulilu, the production company from Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs, exec producers/writers on Broad City, with Downs also co-starring; Anthony King, writer of hit musical Beetlejuice and writer/exec producer on franchises including Silicon Valley and Comedy Central’s upcoming Robbie; Irony Point, run by Daniel Powell and Alex Bach, whose credits include Inside Amy Schumer; and Stuart Miller, an exec producer on the upcoming series Klepper (Comedy Central). He served as co-executive producer on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and exec producer for The Opposition w/ Jordan Klepper.
Hilary Swank will topline and exec produce Netflix’s 10-ep drama series Away, which hails from playwright Andrew Hinderaker, Jason Katims and Matt Reeves. Series, loosely inspired by Chris Jones’ same-titled Esquire article, centers on an American astronaut who leaves behind her husband and teenage daughter to command an international space crew embarking upon a treacherous mission.

The high-stakes political and financial machinations in NY will go on. Showtime picked up a fifth season of its hit series Billions. Series, which airs Sundays at 9p, averages 4.2 million viewers per week across platforms. The season four finale will air Sunday, June 9.
ABC Studios inked multi-year overall deal with 2 Dope Queens co-creator Phoebe Robinson. The writer, comedian and actress will develop, write and act in new projects for the studio.
Jon Favreau is on board to produce dinosaur documentary series Prehistoric Planet for Apple in conjunction with BBC Studios’ Natural History Unit, the division behind Planet Earth and Blue Planet. Series will be exec-produced by Favreau, who directed Iron Man and The Jungle Book, and Planet Earth II exec producer Mike Gunton with series producer Tim Walker and Andrew R. Jones.
HBO is ramping up It’s Watchmen, based on the like-named comic book series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons and published by DC Comics in the ‘80s. The net released a teaser of the show, set in an alternate history where superheroes are viewed as outlaws, is from exec producer Damon Lindelof.
Emmy-winning doc series Who Do You Think You Are? heads back to NBC to celebrate new journeys of self-discovery, connection and diversity. New 13-ep season, from exec producers Lisa Kudrow, Dan Bucatinsky and Ancestry, uses research tools and billions of digitized records from Ancestry to provide insights into the star’s background and illustrate the cultural mosaic that connects us all together. Series will be produced by Shed Media and Is or Isn’t Entertainment.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES
New series The Aquarium splashes on to Animal Planet on Sunday, May 19 at 8p to share stories of the animals who call the 10 million gallons of water at the Georgia Aquarium home. Series “stars” include Pinkie, a geriatric 13-year-old Asian small-clawed otter with a reoccurring nosebleed; a curious rescued green sea turtle named Tank; and Harbor seals Rose, Floyd, and Cerberus, who prepare to relocate to a temporary home within the Aquarium.
Telemundo’s Masterchef Latino returns Sunday, May 19 at 7p, with host Gaby Espino and chefs Claudia Sandoval, Ennio Carota and Benito Molina ready for a new season of delicacies.
Florida has a snake problem, and snake hunter Dusty Crum has assembled the team to tackle it in new Discovery Channel series Guardians of the Glades, debuting Tuesday, May 28 at 10p.
Investigation Discovery brings the sophomore season of cold case series Breaking Homicide on Monday, June 3 at 10p. Featuring veteran police sergeant and P.I. Derrick Levasseur, new season chronicles his quest for answers behind some of the nation’s most confounding cold cases.
New trailer dropped for season 4 of TBS’s The Detour, giving a peak at the upcoming antics of the Parker family, who are on an epic worldwide search for their runaway teen daughter, Delilah. Series returns Tuesday, June 18 at 10:30p.
Viceland introduced its slate of summer programming. The net will premiere two new series—The Wrestlers and Jasper & Errol’s First Time—and is bringing back 2 Chainz’s Most Expensivist for a third season on June 11. In addition, the network has greenlit four other series running the gamut from true crime to street racing — plus a delightfully trippy new comedy series with hip-hop star Danny Brown. The Wrestlers, premiering Wednesday, May 22 at 10p, is hosted by hardcore musician and wrestling fan Damian Abraham and dives into the subcultures in the wrestling universe around the world. Jasper & Errol’s First Time, launching Tuesday, June 11 at 10:30p, features Davon “Jasper” Wilson and Errol Chatham of LA’s hip-hop collective Odd Future. Viceland also greenlit several series: Danny’s House, featuring comedic Detroit hip-hop force Danny Brown; Donkmaster, featuring motorsport guru Sage Thomas; and true crime series How To Rob a Bank and Fine Young Criminals.
Starz set Sunday, June 30 at 8p for the premiere of original supernatural spy thriller The Rook and dropped key art for the series with the tagline “Awaken the Power Within.” Series follows a woman who discovers she’s part of a British secret service organization for people with paranormal abilities after she wakes up in London with no memory of who she is and no way to explain the circle of latex-gloved dead bodies around her.
Fox set Wednesday, August 7 at 9p for the premiere, and released a promo of BH90210, its six-ep series starring original Beverly Hills, 90210 cast members Jason Priestley, Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling. New series concept goes meta, with the original cast back together to play themselves in a serialized drama.

Wheel of Fortune will air its 7,000th episode Friday, May 10, which caps the show’s “Big Money” week, where viewers at home will have a chance to win $7,000 each day. This week host Pat Sajak was presented with an official Guinness World Records certificate for “Longest career as a game show host for the same show.” Sajak’s record totals 35 years and 198 days, from the launch of the syndicated version of the show in 1983 through March 22, 2019, when the record was officially accepted
PBS’s National Memorial Day Concert returns live from the West Lawn of the US Capitol for a 30th anniversary broadcast hosted by Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise on Sunday, May 26 at 8p. Dennis Haysbert, Alison Krauss, Christopher Jackson, Amber Riley, Gen. Colin Powell, Sam Elliott, Patti LaBelle and Gavin DeGraw are among those who’ll take the stage.
Smithsonian Channel takes the Sea of Okhotsk by storm with tow-part doc Russia’s Wild Sea, which reveals this untouched area of natural wonders located almost 4,000 miles from Moscow in Russia’s Far East. The Sea of Okhotsk is a constant survival battleground for humans and a range of wildlife that includes orcas and humpback whales, as well as tigers prowling the forests. Doc bows Wednesday, June 5 at 8p, with the second hour premiering Wednesday, June 12 at 8p.
PODCAST POSTS
All3Media America’s Main Event Media and Audioboom are launching an original podcast division, with an early slate including TrumpMania and a series starring Jodie Sweetin (Fuller House). The new division of the producer of The United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell will be run by Emily Bon, who will both produce and co-write projects. Goal of the division is to develop podcasts that could be fodder for film and/or television projects.
KIDS NEWS
Ahead of the series’ June 14 premiere, T.O.T.S. got a second season order from Disney Junior, which added Vanessa Williams and Megan Hilty to the voice cast. Comedic series follows the adventures of best buds Pip and Freddy, a tenacious penguin and a kind-hearted flamingo who are the only non-stork delivery birds in-training at Tiny Ones Transport Service.
Nelvana and Sesame Workshop are at work on a second season of animated series Esme & Roy. New season and a special will air on and HBO in the US and Treehouse in Canada in early 2020.

Archie’s crib: SVOD service True Royalty TV will give viewers a look at the new home the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan, have created for their family, Frogmore Cottage, in new original doc Inside the Home of a Princess, premiering May 21.
Yahoo Finance premiered weekly celebrity show My Three Cents, featuring spirited conversations with celebrities, artists, athletes and other pop-culture icons on the role money plays in their everyday life. Initial guests include Nick Kroll, Ellie Kemper, Jason Jones and Chrissy Metz.
New four-part docuseries We Gon’ Be Alright, from Indie Lens Storycast, places the issues dividing the world under an ultimately positive lens, as its title suggests. Inspired by the essays written by Jeff Chang and directed by Bao Nguyen (Live From New York), series picks up on events that have transpired in the US since Chang’s book was published in 2016, with each ep examining a different aspect of the social divide over race. Series premieres today (May 9) at the LA Asian Pacific Film Festival ahead of its debut May 14 on Indie Lens Storycast channel, Facebook Watch, and BeAlright.net.
Sinclair Broadcast Group, new owner of 21 Fox regional sports networks it purchased from Disney, is looking into synergies between the RSNs and its streaming service STIRR. CEO Chris Ripley said during yesterday’s quarterly analyst call although STIRR is in start-up mode, sports programming could be incorporated in a way that requires viewers to authenticate through their pay-TV provider.
Turns out most of the series streamed on Netflix in 2018 were library content. This according to new data from Nielsen, which it shared at its Upfront presentation this week. Topping the list was The Office (52.1 billion minutes streamed, followed by Friends (32.6 billion minutes), Grey’s Anatomy (30.3 billion minutes), NCIS (21.2 billion minutes) and Criminal Minds (19.7 billion minutes). The first Netflix original title to crack the top 10 was Orange Is the New Black, which was No. 7 (18.8 billion minutes).

Facebook is taking its third-party fact-checking partnership initiative for a test spin on Instagram, with new ways to prevent the spread of misinformation about vaccines. A pop-up warning that appears when users search certain anti-vax terms is one element of the feature, which is still in development.
Roku stock surged late yesterday after the company reported strong Q1 results, beating Wall Street forecasts with $206.7 million in revenue.
