The NFL and its media partners released the 2020 season’s broadcast schedule for what will hopefully be a full season this fall.
CBS Sports’ 2020 NFL on CBS schedule will be anchored by its exclusive coverage of Super Bowl LV from Tampa, Feb. 7, and a regular season slate that includes the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs against Tom Brady and the Buccaneers in Week 12 (11/29), as well as Pittsburgh/Dallas in Week 9 (11/8), New England/Kansas City in Week 4 (10/4), Kansas City/New Orleans in Week 15 (12/20), Kansas City/L.A. Chargers in the Chargers’ home opener in their new stadium in Week 2 (9/20), and Baltimore/ Houston in Week 2 (9/20). The annual Thanksgiving Day broadcast on the network will feature Houston/Detroit in Week 12 (11/26). In addition, the CBS schedule features nine appearances each by the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers, 10 appearances each by the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens, and 11 by the Houston Texans.
NBC’s Sunday Night Football carries 19 NFL games during the 2020 regular season, as well as three postseason and two preseason games. NBC will televise the first game of the NFL season on Sept. 10 as the Chiefs host the Texans in NFL Kickoff 2020 at 8:20p. In the season opener of Sunday Night Football on Sept. 13, NFL fans will get their first look at the new SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, as the Rams host the Cowboys. NBC will broadcast a pair of Wild Card Playoff games, including the NFL’s first-ever primetime Sunday Wild Card playoff game. The Jan. 10 Wild Card playoff will also be presented on NBCUniversal’s new streaming service, Peacock, and in Spanish on Telemundo. All 2019 NFL playoff teams are on the NBC SNF schedule, including three games each for the Chiefs, 49ers, Packers, and Cowboys, On Thanksgiving night, the Ravens visit the Steelers in the first-ever Thanksgiving game in Pittsburgh.
Monday Night Football on ESPN and ABC will see appearances by 11 of the 12 playoff teams from 2019. The 51st season of Monday Night Football kicks off on ESPN with a doubleheader on Sept. 14 pitting Steelers/Giants at 7:15p and Titans/Broncos at 10:10p. Beginning in week 2, MNF games will start at 8p with Suzy Kolber hosting the Monday Night Countdown pregame show throughout the season as well as halftime and post-game SportsCenter coverage, from the MNF stadium. Schedule highlights include the the 50th anniversary of the first MNF game, as ESPN and ABC combine to televise the Raiders’ first game in Las Vegas against the Saints at brand new Allegiant Stadium
On FOX Sports, coverage opens hot on Week 1 with a showdown between the Buccaneers and the Saints on Sept. 13, at 4:25p. FOX Sports’ 2020 NFL Sunday schedule includes a minimum of 109 regular-season matchups, including 10 appearances each by the Cowboys, Packers and 49ers, as well as 11 from the Saints and nine from the Buccaneers. Highlights include a Week 6 contest between Brady’s Buccaneers and Rodgers’ Packers on Oct. 18, as well as Cowboys/Seahawks in Week 3; 49ers/Saints Week 10; Cowboys/Vikings in Week 11; and Eagles/Cowboys in Week 16. Thanksgiving Day serves up the Redskins/Cowboys at 4:30p on Nov. 26.
Thursday Night Football will run exclusively on NFL Network in Weeks 2-4, while FOX kicks off its Thursday night slate in Week 5. FOX will broadcast 10 Thursday Night Football games between Weeks 5-15 (excluding Thanksgiving night) as well as the Friday, December 25, game between the Vikings/Saints that will also be simulcast via NFL Network, distributed in Spanish on FOX Deportes, and streamed on Amazon Prime Video, beginning with Buccaneers/Bears on Oct. 8. NFL Network will exclusively televise seven games – with FOX producing the full slate of 18 games – including a very special Thursday night contest on September 17. On that day, the 100th birthday of the National Football League, the Cleveland Browns will host the Cincinnati Bengals with the NFL Network broadcast paying tribute to the birthplace of the NFL in nearby Canton.
PROGRAMMING
The NTT IndyCar Series is getting back on track, announcing that its 2020 season will open on June 6 without fans at Texas Motor Speedway. The green flag will take place at 8:45p with qualifying and the race televised live on NBCSN. The remainder of the updated, 15-race INDYCAR calendar for 2020 remains on schedule for competition. “We’re excited and ready to kick off the NTT INDYCAR SERIES season at Texas Motor Speedway,” INDYCAR President Jay Frye said. “We’ve worked closely with Eddie Gossage, the entire TMS team and public health officials on a plan of action that will ensure the safety of our event participants alongside an exciting return to competition for our drivers, teams and viewers tuning in from around the world.”
The Premier Lacrosse League returns to play with the launch of the PLL Championship Series Powered by Ticketmaster, a two-week quarantined and fanless tournament slated to run from July 25-August 9. Throughout the first week, the league’s seven teams will compete in a fourteen-game group play format to determine seeding for the following week’s single-elimination tournament. The winner of the tournament will be crowned the 2020 PLL Champion. All twenty league games will be presented live across NBC, NBCSN, or NBC Sports Gold, with all televised games also streaming live on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app.
Meanwhile, Tennis Channel serves up complete, live coverage of a three-day men’s tennis event in West Palm Beach this weekend – the first competition on U.S. soil between ranked players since the professional sport went on hiatus in March. The UTR Pro Match Series presented by Tennis Channel will take place May 8-10 and feature two top-10 ranked American players. Next, a similar women’s event is set for May 22-24 with three top-10 Americans, as Tennis Channel’s 2020 (Re)Open Tour returns live tennis to fans around the world. Tennis Channel’s coverage begins with the first matches Friday at noon.
May’s American Cornhole League Pro Invitational Qualifier, ACL Cornhole Mania 2020, will be televised live from Rock Hill, on Saturday, with doubles competition at ACL Cornhole Mania 2020 slated for noon on ESPN, while singles will run on ESPN2 starting at 6p. “We’re excited for the opportunity to televise live sports on our networks for fans to enjoy,” said ESPN executive vice president of programming Burke Magnus. “These past two months, we’ve seen the importance of shared experiences in uniting us all. We look forward to continuing that with the upcoming ACL pro qualifier.”
The IOC’s Olympic Channel revealed a slate of four new Five Rings Films documentaries, set to be released in 2020 and 2021. The first film, Rulon Gardner Won’t Die, premieres June 3 and “tells the story of Rulon Gardner, a Wyoming boy raised on a farm, who twenty years ago shocked the world at the Olympic Games in Sydney and overnight became an American icon.” Other films will include The Iron Hammer, The Distance and A Brilliant Curling Story.
To mark the 50-year anniversary of the storied 1970 Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins, NHL Network will debut the documentary, The 1970 Bruins: Big, Bad & Bobby on Mother’s Day this Sunday at 8p. Bobby Orr, Gerry Cheevers, Phil Esposito and Derek Sanderson sit down for a roundtable discussion.
CuriosityStream announced its first-ever original docu-series, 4th and Forever: Muck City will premiere worldwide on May 14. The eight-part series is from award-winning production company Jupiter Entertainment and focused on the battle between rival Pahokee and Glades Central High Schools.
On the heels of last week’s Project 11 about the recovery from injury by NFL veteran Alex Smith, ESPN’s E60 today released the trailer for its next storytelling venture – Imperfect: The Roy Halladay Story – which will debut on May 29, at 7p on ESPN. The program will air on the anniversary of the day in 2010 when Halladay pitched a perfect game for the Philadelphia Phillies.
The YES Network will premiere a special Yankees Classics presentation entitled Mariano Rivera: Enter Sandman at 7p on Sunday. YES will enhance the Mariano Rivera: Enter Sandman telecast by embedding into it new commentary from Rivera, then-Yankees manager Buck Showalter, Bernie Williams, the Yankees’ centerfielder that day, and Robin Ventura.

The Overwatch League and Call of Duty League locked in a deal with Sportradar for a comprehensive integrity program designed to protect both leagues from betting-related corruption. Under the terms of the deal, Sportradar will monitor global betting activity related to domestic and international Overwatch League and Call of Duty League competitions organized by Activision Blizzard Esports and will report any potential integrity issues to the company to help safeguard the integrity of the competitions. In addition, Sportradar will help educate players on betting integrity risks and rules and will also develop an app to enable players to anonymously report suspected integrity issues.
Speaking of betting, the Nevada Gaming Control Board released a notice of approval to permit betting on DreamHack Masters Spring. Tree different wager types will be allowed: head to head, match winner, and overall winner.

50 years ago today: Knicks won their first NBA championship Fifty years ago today, the Knicks won their first NBA title, defeating the Lakers in game #7 of the NBA championship series. In New York, anticipation built throughout the day. But by contract, ABC which had the network rights couldn’t run the game live in the nation’s #1 market, due to blackout prohibitions. The game was played at MSG. As such, Marv Albert’s live radio broadcast was really the only way to follow the game. Marv’s spirited call was riveting. We canvassed a handful of representative newspapers around the country. Of them, the Atlanta Journal Constitution is still running a full print sports section. The Denver Post and Toronto Star have contracted from six or eight pages to two. Some sportswriters have been assigned to the news side.
