PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

TBS picked up a second season of The Last O.G., starring Tracy Morgan and Tiffany Haddish, and a third round of comedy/thriller Search Party. O.G. is 2018’s top cable comedy show, while Search grew double digits in its second season and became the fastest TBS original to reach one million views on VOD in season one.

Partners in crime: Oxygen renewed Dick Wolf series Cold Justice and Criminal Confessions. Both are in pre-production and slated to return later this year.

Propagate is making its first investment in production company Incognita, from producer Edouard de Vesinne. The companies will package big dramas and movies for local and global audiences for local broadcasters, cable players and OTT services. “Our aim is to produce and deliver premium content to worldwide television audiences,” said Propagate co-CEOs Ben Silverman and Howard T. Owens. “Edouard is one of the leading film and television producers in Europe with over two decades of experience. His instincts and relationships with broadcasters across Europe will make for a powerful partnership.”

An animated Fast & Furious series will be the first show from a kids and family programming pact between Netflix and DreamWorks Animation Television. Vin Diesel, Neal Moritz and Chris Morgan, producers on the films, are among the exec producers of the franchise extension.

ADVERTISING

Viacom and Comcast’s advanced ads business, FreeWheel, inked a long-term agreement that expands Viacom’s use of FreeWheel’s operating system, and uses Comcast’s anonymized set-top box data to improve precision in addressable TV targeting. “The vision we see from a lot of heads of sales and CFOs right now is, the faster they can get to that ability to run one campaign across their entire portfolio of assets, the better,” said David Clark, EVP and GM of FreeWheel. “You need a solution that works in all three environments, including linear, set-top box and VOD. Then, you also need a data strategy built on top of actual viewing data.”

Meredith Corp. ad technology company Viant took a look at which brands and industries resonate with HBO’s Westworld versus Game of Thrones, and they were in for some surprises. While Viant expected that Westworld fans would over-index for video games, technology adoption, and travel, and that GOT fans would over-index for interests in politics, the only hypothesis that held true is Westworld fans’ behaviors around travel. GOT fans are more interested in video games and technology than Westworld fans (10% more likely to be “technology wizards”), and Westworld fans are more engaged in politics (7% more likely to attend a political event). Lesson: it can be worth digging into data.

DIGITAL DATA

Ted Sarandos, chief content officer of Netflix, made $22.4 million in 2017, according to filings with the SEC, up 18% from 2016. CEO Reed Hastings had a modest-by-comparison raise of 5%, to a hardly modest $24.4 million. The company said it plans to raise $1.5 billion in debt to fund its operations, “which may include content acquisitions, production and development, capital expenditures, investments, working capital and potential acquisitions and strategic transactions.”

SundanceTV just launched three short films from the 2018 Sundance Film Festival on SundanceTV.com and the Sundance TVE app, with more to come later in the year. A new destination on SundanceTV.com will host the films.

CBS All Access has gone international. The direct-to-consumer SVOD service launched yesterday in Canada, its first global expansion. And it’s just the beginning, said Marc DeBevoise, president and COO, CBS Interactive: “We’ve experienced  incredible growth domestically and see a great opportunity to bring the service …directly to international audiences across a range of platforms and devices.”

Media startup Vertical Networks is launching a second Snapchat Discover channel. Biweekly channel Mindsy, based on a Japanese study of self-discovery, will use responses people give to questions they’re asked to interpret personality traits. “It’s like merging psychology with horoscopes to reveal secrets about people’s personalities,” Vertical CEO Tom Wright told Business Insider. “We’re making a game out of it, except that there’s actually some math behind the results you get.”

Daily online show People Now is airing at a new time: Monday-Friday at noon on People.com. Jeremy Parsons and Andrea Boehlke host.

Stage, the first streaming network devoted to theater, will launch in August. The free and subscription-based platform will feature original scripted, variety and reality series, live theater, docs, talks shows, concerts and more.

Sling TV may be the biggest vMVPD, with a subscription base of 2.21 million, but DirecTV Now is on pace to possible overtake it, reports Strategy Analytics. While Sling TV gained 700,000 subscribers in 2017, DirecTV added 1 million. In addition to a tightening race, what does it mean? “This is clearly a new space that is taking off with U.S. consumers as they look to spend less on their TV-based entertainment,” said the research firm.

GOING GLOBAL

Singapore-based Bomanbridge Media licensed UKTV’s Donal’s Asian Baking to BBC Lifestyle in Asia. Bomanbridge Media acquired the rights from Argonon International.

9 Story Distribution International licensed animated children’s series Luo Bao Bei to Channel 5’s Milkshake in the UK.
