Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 23, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The NFL announced that ESPN will be able to televise its first-ever post-season game from the league, with the network set to carry a Wild Card playoff game during the upcoming season. The programming move comes with the launch of the company’s new TV deal, which runs through the 2021 season and gives the league an option to air a postseason Wild Card playoff game on the channel. ESPN’s MNF team of Mike Tirico, Jon Gruden and sideline reporter Lisa Salters will call the game, along with the 2015 NFL Pro Bowl.
Meanwhile, NBC Sports picks up an NFL Divisional Playoff game as part of its new deal with the league that runs through 2022. NBC will broadcast three 2014 postseason games this season Super Bowl XLIX from Arizona on Sunday, February 1, 2015, a Divisional Playoff game on the weekend of January 10-11, and a Wild Card Playoff game on the January 3-4 weekend.
Speaking of the NFL, the league will debut its 2014 schedule tonight. NFL Network and ESPN2 will both offer shows about the upcoming slate of games starting at 8p. NFL Total Access: Schedule Release ’14 presented by Verizon on NFL Network will be three hours, hosted by Rich Eisen and feature analysts Steve Mariucci, Warren Sapp and Mike Silver.
NBC Sports Group’s coverage of the first five days of the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs continues to spike, with viewership and consumption increases across NBC, NBCSN, CNBC and NBC Sports Live Extra, according to Nielsen. Through April 20, NBCSN is averaging 621,000 viewers (10 games), up 61% over 2013. CNBC is pulling 295,000 viewers (four games), its best ever through five days and up 25%. Saturday’s Columbus/Pittsburgh Game 2 hit 850,000 viewers, NBCSN’s most-watched game in the first week of the playoffs on record. On NBC, Game 2 of the Blackhawks/Blues averaged 1.855 million viewers, up 52% from the comparable game in 2013.
Meanwhile, NBCSN analysts and Olympic figure skaters Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinksi are now taking their talents to a new locale, and will serve as fashion experts for the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 3 and the Kentucky Oaks on Friday, May 2. Most recently, the pair were fashion critics for Access Hollywood’s coverage of the 2014 Academy Awards and will now contribute to NBC Sports Group’s coverage of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 3 (4-7p on NBC and Noon-4p on NBCSN) and the Kentucky Oaks on Friday, May 2 (3-6p on NBCSN).
BTN locked down six games slated to air in primetime this fall, with teams including the conference’s 2013 Big Ten Champion Michigan State, Ohio State, Michigan and Big Ten newcomers Rutgers University and the University of Maryland. Nine of 14 Big Ten schools are part of the primetime selections, and five of the six games are conference contests. The action begins on Sept. 13 with Penn State/Rutgers. On Sept. 27, BTN carries a doubleheader with Cincinnati/Ohio State followed by Illinois/Nebraska. Other matchups include Michigan/Rutgers on Oct. 4; Nebraska/Northwestern on Oct. 18 and Michigan State/Maryland on Nov. 15.
In talent news, MLB Network announced that veteran MLB pitcher Ryan Dempster has joined the network as an analyst where he will appear across MLB Network’s studio programming and make his debut today from Wrigley Field’s 100th anniversary celebration during High Heat with Christopher Russo at 1p and Intentional Talk at 5p.
FOX Deportes signed Mexican soccer star Luis "El Matador" Hernandez to serve as an analyst to its leading soccer talk show, La Ultima Palabra. He will also be a guest commentator across several of the network’s media platforms.
FOX Sports is paying homage to No. 2, teaming up with MLB Productions for Derek Jeter: A Tribute that will air on April 29 at 8:30p on FOX Sports 1. The special will offer "intimate and previously untold stories directly from those whom Jeter played with and against" combined with 20 years of archival footage from Jeter’s career. The program will be narrated by Joe Torre.

CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada is partnering with Twitter Canada and Budweiser to post sponsored clips using SnappyTV that will feature video from each CBC game broadcast including goals and overtime winners on the @hockeynight account. The feature extends Budweiser’s existing media sponsorship with CBC that also includes Coach’s Corner and the fan experience Hockey Night in Canada: 2nd Screen.
Comcast Corp. reported results for the first quarter of 2014 that included a 72.8% rise in revenue from its broadcast television segment to $2.5 billion versus $2.2 billion from the first quarter of 2013. The spike includes $846 million of revenue generated by the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
ESPN is launching school specific brand spots to promote the debut of the SEC Network. The campaign now features a slate of 14 SEC school-specific creative spots and print ads as well as social and digital activations across all members of the conference. The initiative was developed in collaboration with McKinney and looks to celebrate the traditions and fandom of the SEC, encouraging fans to "Take It All In."
Minor League Baseball Charities is donating $10,000 to the United Way of Snohomish County’s Disaster Recovery Fund to assist in the relief efforts from the March 22 mudslide in Oso, Wash. The mudslide occurred 30 miles from the Everett AquaSox, a Minor League Baseball club in the Northwest League. The AquaSox will present the $10,000 check, on behalf of MiLB Charities, to the United Way of Snohomish County on Friday. The club is also donating all walk-up ticket sales from its June 16 game to the relief and recovery efforts.
Through the first five days of the NHL Playoffs, NBC Sports Live Extra has delivered 18.8 million minutes, 206,000 unique viewers, 508,000 visits and 1.22 million live starts off action. Those figures are up 532% (2.98 million minutes), 482% (36,000 uniques), 469% (89,000 visits), and 739% (145,000 live starts), respectively, vs. the first five days of the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The top game in minutes consumed was the April 17 Blackhawks/Blues game which saw 2.7 million taken in by fans.
PlayOn! Sports named Christopher Young as Vice President of Sales for the NFHS Network where he will be charged with growing revenues of the NFHS Network national platform to local markets through creative sponsorships and ad sales.
