The past several days haven’t been kind to LeEco, the Chinese consumer electronics company that looked to make a big splash in the North American market this year. A week after the company’s plans to acquire Vizio fell through, and a month since it abandoned plans to utilize a massive Silicon Valley office complex, LeEco has now axed plans to launch a U.S.-oriented SVOD service. Called EcoPass, the service would have served up premium video programming, cloud services, and other features. “We will be replacing EcoPass with 3-months of DirecTV NOW with every purchase of a LeEco ecophone or ecotv,” a LeEco spokesperson confirmed in a brief statement.

YouTube TV, the Google-owned live TV service that started rolling out earlier this month, comes equipped with unlimited cloud-based DVR storage. But as YouTube recently confirmed to the Wall Street Journal, there’s one limitation, and it could prove to rankle its ad-averse millennial target audience: Subscribers can’t fast-forward past commercials in certain popular shows. There’s no such restriction in traditional DVRs, or in cloud DVR services from Dish Network’s Sling TV or Comcast. For new TV episodes that are also available via VOD – which disables fast-forwarding past ads – YouTube TV subs won’t have access to ad-free recordings. The restriction is related to a “tangle of contracts” with companies like Disney, NBCU, and 21st Century Fox, according to the Journal.

OTT + SVOD

Amazon is taking its Film Festival Stars program to lower Manhattan. The rights-holders of any 2017 feature film selections at the Tribeca Film Festival can opt into the program. First introduced at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the program – will grant bonuses of up to $100,000 – in addition to performance-based royalties – in exchange for an exclusive 24-month SVOD window. Short films are also eligible, with a $50,000 bonus pool to be shared equally amongst the top five shorts streaming on Prime Video. In addition, Amazon will be searching for especially promising Tribeca titles to be acquired under the Amazon Studios banner.

France’s theatrical exhibitors guild, the FNCF, is none too thrilled with Netflix’s inclusion in the Cannes Film Festival. Two of the streaming giant’s movies, Bong Joon-ho’s Okja and Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories, were recently announced as part of the fest’s lineup. The FNCF responded by demanding that both films receive a theatrical release in France. The guild also objected to the fact that Netflix is using the French festival to promote its films despite the fact that the company recent closed its Paris office. (Regardless, Netflix is still paying sales taxes in France.) Much of this could soon be moot: According to sources who spoke to Variety, Netflix is indeed planning to release both films theatrically in France.

RESEARCH

One of the biggest takeaways from RBC’s new survey of America’s streaming habits: Amazon may not be Netflix, but it’s doing pretty well for itself. The survey, which reached more than 1,000 Americans, found that 55% of respondents had watched at least some Netflix content in the past 12 months. Among video services, YouTube came in at second (46%), while Amazon came in at third (31%). Netflix’s upward trajectory – the number was 25% in 2011 – is slightly less shocking when you consider the fact that the streaming giant has been pouring many billions of dollars into original content. (It’s slated to be $6 billion for calendar year 2017; by comparison, HBO spent $2 billion on content last year.) But that 31% number is still fairly decent for Amazon, and suggests that its service is gaining traction. For its part, Amazon will spend $4.5 billion on content in 2017, according to a recent estimate from JPMorgan.
