Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 15, 2014, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
You’re at a party with a friend, and ten people are present, including you. Your friend bets you that for every person you find at the party who has the same birthday as you, you get $1; for every person she finds who doesn’t have the same birthday as you, she gets $2. Would you accept the wager?
Luckily, not everyone interviews like Google (or gives surprise $1,000 bonuses), but Cynopsis recently conducted a Classifieds Survey to find out what the television industry is truly searching for when reeling in new hires. More than 350 employees from the top tech companies, networks, ad and marketing firms participated in the survey to shed light on everything from a company’s hiring outlook for the year to their top interview questions. Of those surveyed, 31.9 percent represented companies with 100-1,000 employees, 28.5 percent with 1-10 employees, 23.6 percent with 1,000+ employees, and finally 16.0 percent with 10-50 employees.
With March reporting a steady 6.7 percent U.S. unemployment rate and 192,000 jobs added (U.S. Department of Labor), the hiring outlook mirrors the rallying job market. Regarding hiring plans for the upcoming year in comparison to the soft hiring market in 2012 and 2013, 54.7 percent of our respondents said their company will add little to no new staff. However, 43.0 percent are looking to increase staff and jobs. And more good news: just 2.3 percent will eliminate jobs. For those looking to bring new members onboard, 63.8 percent plan to hire fewer than five new employees. 15.7 percent are planning to make 6-12 hires, 10.0 percent plan on 12-25 hires and 10.5 percent will bring on more than 25 staffers.
The specific skills and specialties employers are looking to beef up in the next two years are: marketing/PR (43.9 percent), sales (37.9 percent), media planning/strategy (25.6 percent), research (20.5 percent) and legal (7.4 percent). The level of the posted position ranked as follows: 70.4 percent entry/administration level, 64.1 percent manager level, 33.0 percent director level, 11.1 percent VP level and 3.1 percent postings were for a higher than VP level. Finally, 45.9 percent of respondents believed a candidate with a background in the entertainment industry was very important, 37.9 percent thought it somewhat important and 16.2 percent found it not important.
For the last part of the hiring process – the interview – employers shared insight on what they ask in order to reveal the most telling aspects of a candidate. The results were, thankfully, not even close to a Google conundrum. Top questions focused on past experiences, the candidate’s five-year plan, the reason for applying to a specific company, and the job-seekers strengths and weaknesses. And, the biggest challenge during the onboarding process? Training the candidate.
