The Asylum is asking Sharknado fans to dig into their wallets to help finance bonus footage for its sequel to the social media smash. Partnering with crowd-funding platform Indiegogo, the production company aims to raise $50,000 by May 30, to give a chainsaws-and-sharks scene on Sharknado 2: The Second One "the treatment it deserves." Incentives range from t-shirts to a chance for a walk-on role in the movie, airing July 30 on Syfy.
Choosing Stephen Colbert to replace David Letterman on Late Show was a no-brainer, according to Les Moonves. "We knew he would be the greatest replacement for David we could ever get," the CBS CEO said on The Early Show Friday. "And when I called Dave to ask for his blessing he said exactly the same thing." Less than thrilled? Conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh, who called the appointment "a declared war on the heartland of America."
Disney‘s deal to acquire online video producer Maker Studios for $500 million has hit a snag. Maker co-founder and former CEO Danny Zappin and three other former execs have filed a lawsuit aimed at preventing the takeover, claiming the documents Maker sent to shareholders about the merger agreement neglected to mention a pending lawsuit that alleges Maker directors issued shares to themselves to dilute Zappin’s stake. A shareholder vote to approve the Disney bid was to take place April 15.
Al Jazeera America, launched in August, let go of an undisclosed number of employees on Friday. "We have reached what I call our steady-state level of operations," wrote Kate O’Brian, president of the news net to employees. "We are bringing our staffing levels into alignment with our long-range plan as per our original business case."
Discovery will air five nights of live late-night programs leading into its Everest Jump Live global event, which features Joby Ogwyn taking the massive leap. Everest: Live from Base Camp launches Monday, May 5 at 11p, offering updates, info and "a chance to see what it’s like to actually be at Everest Base Camp – not just for Joby, but for all those who contribute to Everest’s unique culture," said Eileen O’Neill, group president, Discovery, Science and Velocity networks.

NYCers, check outside your office windows: FX‘s crochet-covered Fargo bus (to match the show’s key art creative) is traversing the Big Apple, handing out free scarves and hot chocolate. The original drama, starring Billy Bob Thornton, premieres tomorrow, April 15 at 10p.
Bravo late night half hour The People’s Couch is moving to prime time. The comedy documentary, produced by Studio Lambert and All3Media, recently delivered a series high 655,000 total viewers at 11:30p; starting Tuesday, April 15 it’s in the 10p slot.

Syfy issued a straight-to-series order to "space opera" The Expanse, from Alcon Television Group. Set two hundred years in the future, the thriller follows a race across the solar system to expose "the greatest conspiracy in human history."
Spike TV is taking its longest-running non-scripted original series, Auction Hunters, to a 20-episode season five. Season four of the Gurney Productions show averaged 1.5 million viewers Saturdays at 9p.
Andrew Garfield will host Saturday Night Live for the first time on May 3, the weekend his Amazing Spider-Man 2 is released. Garfield will be joined by musical guests Coldplay, hitting the NBC sketch comedy show for the fifth time.
Lindsay Lohan gets the one-on-one treatment on Bravo‘s Watch What Happens Live on Thursday, April 17 at 11p. Lohan’s making the rounds – last week she appeared on Late Show with David Letterman, where the star of OWN docu-series Lindsay and Letterman surprised Oprah Winfrey with an on-air phone call.
Nat Geo‘s Southern Justice doesn’t premiere until fall, but the net is offering a preview episode on Tuesday, April 15 at 10p. Produced by Electus and the Weinstein Company, the law enforcement docu-series "is an exhilarating ride that embraces the spontaneity of unscripted television and allows our cast and crew to showcase real reality at its very best," said Corie Henson, EVP, unscripted TV, Electus.
Turner Movie Classics celebrates its 20th anniversary today, Monday, April 14 with TCM: Twenty Classic Moments, recalling events like Ted Turner throwing the switch in 1994, Robert Osborne receiving a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Mickey Rooney telling the story of a fight he once had on-set. Special airs at 7p.
ABC‘s Jimmy Kimmel Live tops off his run of "Scandal Thursdays" with "Behind the Scandalabra," on Thursday, April 17, the night of the political drama’s season three finale. Special ep will feature interviews with show creator Shonda Rhimes and cast members, as well as a blooper reel.
PBS has a diverse summer sked, from season two of Endeavour on Masterpiece Mystery! (Sundays, June 29-July 20 at 9p), to documentary Al Capone (wt; Tuesday, July 22 at 8p) to new comedy Vicious (Sundays, June 29-August 3 at 10:30p). "We have hit a strong programming stride year-round," said Beth Hoppe, PBS chief programming executive, "and built a dedicated home on PBS member stations for a vast array of new, quality programming."
With the tag line, "the best ice cream bar ever conceived," Klondike’s TV ad for a new ice cream entry starts out with a surprisingly steamy (for animated food) scene. Breaking today, the suggestive spot for Klondike Kandy Bars is "spicy," acknowledged Alfie Vivian, Unilever‘s VP-refreshments to AdAge, "but we have had some consumer feedback and we know they love it." Klondike has teamed with CollegeHumor, which will create a video series to "further tell the story" of the Kandy/Klondike romance.
At last week’s Cynopsis webinar, The New Secrets of Selling to Advertisers, our four experts offered valuable insight into what makes a successful pitch – and what doesn’t. "A third of the time when I meet with media reps, the conversation is not productive," said Tom Talbert, group director, media services, Lowe Campbell Ewald. "People just aren’t prepared." Lynn LaRocca, SVP of marketing and advertising, Modell’s, advised, "Cold calls and emails that are generic pitches are a turn-off. Make sure your research is relevant." President and brand strategist for TruthCo., Linda Ong, noted that while "numerical figures have led advertiser understanding of value… right now, it’s more important for consumers to understand that something is meaningful in culture, than that a lot of people are watching." So what’s working? Scripps EVP, ad sales and marketing Jon Steinlauf offered up examples of successful brand integrations, saying they respond to the three necessary prime directives: "Does it overcome the client’s challenge? Does it improve your content? Does it benefit everyone?" For info on how to hear more, click here.
Melanie Papalia (The Newsroom) will recur as a guest star on USA‘s Suits, returning this summer for season four. Season three finale aired April 10.
