Paid Inclusion: Paid inclusion is a search engine marketing product where the search engine company charges fees related to inclusion of websites in their search index. The practice, needless to say, is controversial, and has decreased over time.
 
 

TOP NEWS
 

On Friday, a terrorist attack in Stockholm, Sweden resulted in the deaths of four people. We now that one of those individuals was Spotify executive Chris Bevington. He had served as the company’s Director of Global Partnerships and Business Development for five years. Bevington, who was British, worked from Stockholm. “The only light in this deeply tragic moment is the outpouring of love, compassion and solidarity that we have seen from everyone,” wrote Spotify CEO Daniel Ek in a post. Bevington was 41. May he rest in peace.

 

LeEco’s North American launch isn’t quite going as planned. The Chinese consumer electronics maker won’t be buying Vizio after all.  The two companies reached an acquisition pact last summer. Vizio, a specialist in manufacturing TVs – including those of the smart variety – was to be purchased for $2 billion in cash. But the companies now say the acquisition has been scuttled “due to regulatory headwinds” in China. It’s not the first sign that LeEco’s ambitious plans for U.S. expansion are running into difficulties. Last month, amidst a cash crunch, the company reportedly decided to sell a 49-acre Silicon Valley property it had initially purchased to serve as an office complex.
 
Dailymotion has long been compared to YouTube. But, well, it isn’t YouTube – and now it looks like it won’t try to be. The video hosting site, owned by French media conglomerate Vivendi, is planning a major relaunch in June. The company certainly isn’t doing away with user-generated content, but that will no longer be its overwhelming focus. Instead, Dailymotion will introduce a curated feed of professionally-produced content. According to the company, the relaunched platform will provide a “daily digest” of programming focused around, news, entertainment, music and sports.

ADVERTISING
 

Facebook announced that it now has 5 million active advertisers using its platform. And that represents some very rapid growth, even for Facebook. The number was 4 million as recently as September, and 3 million as recently as March 2016. And that’s not counting Facebook’s Instagram, which earlier this year announced that it has over a million advertisers of its own.
 
Programmatic ad tech company SpotX announced a new integration with OmniVirt, a specialist in 360-degree video advertising. Under the deal, OmniVirt’s 360-degree video technology will be available across SpotX’s programmatic platform.
 
Programmatic market research firm Lucid announced that it has raised $60 million in new funding. The minority investment was led by private equity firm North Bridge Growth Equity. Lucid says the funding will be used to expand its team and to advance product design and development. 
 
 

LIVE VIDEO
 

Twitter announced that its live-streaming platform Periscope will now enable broadcasters to customize the hearts that appear within their live-streams. When users tap on Periscope’s heart feature to express approval of a video, they might instead see a customized icon or image. (The program, shockingly enough, is called Custom Hearts.) Brands have to work directly with Periscope in order to use the program. Comcast’s NBCUniversal, in a promotion for the upcoming film The Fate of the Furious, was the first company to make use of the feature.

 
 
PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS
 

Amazon is expanding its video content in India. The company has inked a new licensing deal with Paramount Pictures, bringing a slew of new film titles to the Indian version of Amazon’s Prime Video service. The new content includes films such as Star Trek Beyond and 10 Cloverfield Lane, as well as older Paramount titles like Shrek and Mission: Impossible. Amazon India already has deals in place with companies such as the BBC and Lionsgate.
 
 

OTT + SVOD
 

Sling TV, Dish Network’s OTT TV service, has expanded its First Look cloud DVR program to customers who access the service through Android and Roku platforms, including Roku players, Roku TVs, Android TV devices, and Android mobile devices. The First Look program grants fifty hours of Cloud DVR storage for $5 per month.
 
 

VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY
 

Semi-conductor company AMD has made a new acquisition. According to Forbes, the company has acquired Nitero, which builds wireless chips used for streaming VR content from desktop computers to headsets. The acquisition includes all of Nitero’s intellectual property and personnel. Pat Kelly, Nitero’s co-founder and CEO, will now serve as AMD’s Corporate Vice President of Wireless IP. Deal terms weren’t disclosed.
