Good morning. It’s Tuesday April 7, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

The AVP will be playing on a new court this year, as the Pro Beach Volleyball Tour stuck a deal with NBC Sports Group for tournaments to be televised on NBC and NBCSN, as well as live streamed on NBC Sports Live Extra. The return to the NBC umbrella will see 17.5 hours of coverage this year with 10 on NBC and 7.5 on NBCSN and include the men’s and women’s finals of all seven regular-season tournaments. In addition, NBC and NBCSN will feature the finals and early-round coverage of an AVP-run tournament on the international FIVB Tour within the United States.

“We are very pleased to return the AVP Tour and its elite athletes to NBC Sports Group’s multiple platforms, and look forward to a long and mutually beneficial partnership that brings the unparalleled excitement of AVP tournaments into fans’ living rooms on Sunday afternoons throughout the summer,” said AVP Managing Partner Donald Sun. “As the 2016 Rio Games approach, this comprehensive new partnership gives us the perfect platform to further showcase beach volleyball to a national audience.”

ON THE AIR

MLB Opening Night on ESPN2 was a hit for the channel with viewership rising 47% over last year’s numbers. Boasting 3,354,000 viewers, the Cardinals/Cubs marked the biggest audience for an ESPN or ESPN2 MLB Opening Night since 2008, according Fast National figures from Nielsen, with a corresponding 2.0 rating, up 43% from 2014. On the digital front, the game had 163,000 unique viewers, for an uptick of 180% over last year, with 8.6 million minutes viewed.

Speaking of baseball, MLB formally announced on Monday that DC will play host to the 2018 All-Star game at Nationals Park. The city has previously host the Midsummer Classic four times, in 1937, 1956, 1962 and 1969.

Time for UConn and Notre Dame to square off in the NCAA National Championship game tonight, with ESPN carrying the game at 8:30p. The NCAA Women’s Championship Special Presented by Capital One will air ahead of time with an hour-long preview special at 7:30p and hosted by Kevin Negandhi, Kara Lawson and Rebecca Lobo. Meanwhile, a 90-minute College Basketball Live: Women’s National Championship Special airs on ESPNU at 5:30p.

Univision is boasting about its first quarter ratings results, airing 4 of the top 5 most-viewed soccer matches on television among both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, regardless of language. UniMas’ broadcast of the Mexico/Ecuador international friendly on March 28 marked the most-viewed soccer match of 1Q15 with an average of 2.6 million Total Viewers and 1.5 million Adults 18-49. On Univision, viewership for Liga MX increased by 10% among both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49 vs. prior year.

Outside Television scored a deal with DISH Network, where the channel will join DISH’s Multi-Sport Pack. “We’ve partnered with Outside Television to take our customers directly into the action of extreme outdoor sports,” said Josh Clark, DISH vice president of programming. “We are expanding our lineup of active outdoor lifestyle programming and unconventional sports coverage from mountaineering to BASE jumping and kitesurfing.”

CBS Sports is set to carry three CBS Sport Spectacular golf specials on Saturday with The Masters: Substance of Style at 1p, Keys to the Masters at 1:30p and The Masters: When They Were Young at 2p.

Premier Boxing Champions has another outlet, striking a deal with SiriusXM with the first broadcast set to run April 11 with SiriusXM Sports Zone, channel 92. PBC on SiriusXM broadcasts will be produced by SiriusXM with the broadcast team set to include Randy Gordon as the blow-by-blow voice and former heavyweight contender Gerry Cooney as the analyst. Sway Calloway will be the ringside reporter.

FIFA presidential candidate Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein told ESPN FC that he was calling for an investigation into the sudden World Cup rights extension with FOX and Telemundo, which were awarded “without a tender process or any discussion with the FIFA executive committee.” FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke previously stated that the organization "did what it had to do” to prevent legal action from the broadcasters because the 2022 Qatar World Cup was shifted to the winter.

The NFL saw its sponsorship revenue grow 7.8% to $1.15 billion for the league and its teams in the 2014 season, according to IEG Research. That number almost doubles the 4.2% rise in the overall sponsorship industry and 4.9% increase in the overall sports category last year, according to the company.

The White House Historical Association is entering a deal with the Washington Nationals via multi-year partnership that will expand the association’s efforts to educate the public on “the rich history of the White House and expand its mission of preserving White House history.” The partnership marks the White House Historical Association’s first partnership with a professional sports team and will include a President Coolidge bobblehead giveaway; signage on the Nationals’ left field garage honoring one of President Coolidge’s first pitches; and an in-game White House History Challenge.

Rabble.TV announced the launch of its community-driven, live audio streaming website and app designed to let fans find alternative audio options for their favorite sports and TV shows. Instead of listening to the canned network audio, users can hear games broadcast by actual fans  or they can chose to broadcast the games themselves.
