Good morning. It’s Wednesday April 5, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
North Carolina’s victory over Gonzaga boosted viewership for CBS, as the championship game was seen by an average of 22.998 million viewers, up 30% over last year’s game on TBS. With the viewership boost in the books, Turner Sports and CBS Sports report that this year’s tournament ranked as the second most-watched in 23 years, averaging 10.827 million viewers, up 16% over last year’s totals. Meanwhile, NCAA March Madness Live netted a record-setting 98 million live video streams during the NCAA Tournament, up 33% over last year with the National Championship game reeling in 4.4 million live video streams, an all-time record for the title game.
Tony Romo is now hitting the sports broadcasting field, with CBS Sports announcing that the former Cowboys quarterback will now become CBS Sports’ lead NFL game analyst beginning with the 2017-18 NFL season, replacing Phil Simms to join Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson on the microphone as the lead announce team for the network’s coverage of The NFL on CBS on Sunday afternoons and Thursday Night Football. Meanwhile, the company announced that “Phil has been a very important part of our coverage since the NFL returned to CBS in 1998. His strong opinions, coupled with his tremendous knowledge and passion for the National Football League, has created a unique broadcasting style making him one of the best analysts to ever call the game. We are discussing with Phil his future role with CBS Sports. We cannot thank him enough for the way he has represented himself and CBS Sports during his tenure as CBS’s lead NFL analyst.”
In other talent news, ESPN announced that Michelle Beadle has been named the full-time host of NBA Countdown on ABC and ESPN where she will lead the company’s NBA pre-game and halftime shows, including for the NBA Finals on ABC. She will also host ESPN’s and ABC’s studio coverage throughout the NBA Playoffs, which includes ESPN’s exclusive coverage of the Western Conference Finals. Beadle will host the remaining regular-season editions of NBA Countdown on ESPN and ABC, including for the season finale of NBA Saturday Primetime on ABC on April 8 as well as continue to serve as a co-host for SportsNation.
The NCAA “reluctantly” agreed to consider North Carolina to play host once again for championship events after the state enacted “compromise legislation” to a law that limited protections for LGBT people, noting that the new law “meets the minimal NCAA requirements.” Meanwhile, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and Equality NC released statement objecting to the decision, noting “The NCAA’s decision to backtrack on their vow to protect LGBTQ players, employees and fans is deeply disappointing and puts people at risk," said HRC President Chad Griffin. “After drawing a line in the sand and calling for repeal of HB2, the NCAA simply let North Carolina lawmakers off the hook."
Golf Channel’s coverage of the 2017 Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals on Sunday posted its most-watched telecast ever, bringing in 380,000 average viewers per minute during the telecast. In addition, the event delivered the most-streamed minutes ever, clocking in at 234,000 for a rise of 53% YOY.
Saturday’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race on FOX drew 1,591,000 viewers according to Nielsen, ranking it the most-watched NCWTS race on any network in five years. Audience delivery was up 35% from last year’s race on FS1, hitting 1,177,000 and was 23% better with Adults 18-49.
