Good morning. It’s Tuesday April 4, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
In hockey news, the NHL appears to have closed the door for its players to participate in the 2018 Olympics once and for all. In a statement, the league writes that “A number of months have now passed and no meaningful dialogue has materialized. Instead, the IOC has now expressed the position that the NHL’s participation in Beijing in 2022 is conditioned on our participation in South Korea in 2018. And the NHLPA has now publicly confirmed that it has no interest or intention of engaging in any discussion that might make Olympic participation more attractive to the Clubs. As a result, and in an effort to create clarity among conflicting reports and erroneous speculation, this will confirm our intention to proceed with finalizing our 2017-18 Regular Season schedule without any break to accommodate the Olympic Winter Games. We now consider the matter officially closed.”
Meanwhile, NBC Sports, with rights to both organizations, stated that “The Olympic have long been the world’s greatest international hockey tournament irrespective of whether professionals or amateurs are playing. Although we’re disappointed that NHL players will not get the chance to experience and compete at the 2018 Winter Olympics next February, we’re confident that hockey fans and Olympics viewers will tune in to watch the unique style of play that occurs at the Olympic Winter Games when athletes are competing for their country.”
It’s another four years of Hard Knocks. HBO Sports, NFL Media and NFL locked in a long-term extension of the franchise, with this year’s five-episode season slated to begin on Aug. 8. To date, 11 editions of the series have been presented. “The Hard Knocks franchise continues to thrive as the preeminent sports reality series,” says Peter Nelson, executive vice president, HBO Sports. “The partnership between HBO, the NFL and its teams, along with NFL Films, has consistently produced unrivaled and groundbreaking television programming. We are thrilled that HBO will remain the series’ home.”
MLB Opening Night proved a hit on multiple fronts. ESPN reports that its coverage of the Cardinals win over the Cubs ranked the company’s most-watched Opening Night game ever, according to Fast Nationals from Nielsen. The game scored an average total live audience of 3,707,000 average viewers, up 26% over last year’s equivalent. On television, Opening Night generated 3,616,000 average viewers, up 25%.
On the local front, YES Network saw Sunday’s Yankees/Rays telecast open the season as the most-viewed Yankees season opener in five years. The game averaged 445,000 total viewers in the New York DMA, with an average of a 4.5 TV household rating.
Elsewhere in ratings news, Sunday’s final round coverage of the ANA Inspiration saw Golf Channel draw a .43 overnight rating for the LPGA event, up 30% year-over-year vs. 2016. The overnight rating now ranks as the highest-rated final round LPGA Tour telecast on cable since the 2016 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship final round.
WWE saw WrestleMania 33 become the highest-grossing event in the history of the Orlando Citrus Bowl, breaking the stadium’s attendance record with 75,245 fans from all 50 states and 62 countries, according to the company. Overall, WWE’s annual event grossed $14.5 million. WrestleMania 34 will take place on Sunday, April 8, 2018 from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.
NBC Sports Network is buying in to poker, announcing a deal with Poker Central to bring its programming for the channel. The deal includes exclusive television rights to broadcast the Super High Roller Bowl as well as linear and digital rights to upcoming events and regularly scheduled Monday primetime poker event coverage on NBCSN beginning in the fall, along with streaming on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports App. “NBCSN is thrilled to present Poker Central’s high-stakes programming,” said Gary Quinn, Vice President, Programming, NBC Sports Group. “Partnering with Poker Central allows us to continue to deliver high-quality programming, while creating a destination for both existing and new poker fans alike.”
Former Bills and Jets head coach Rex Ryan is heading to ESPN where he will join the crew of Sunday NFL Countdown this September. The deal also includes weekly appearances on the NFL pregame show, while contributing to SportsCenter, ESPN Radio, and more. He makes his debut on Saturday at 3p, calling the Florida State University Spring Game.
Bunim/Murray Productions is preparing a new scripted series based on the life of Pele. Partnering with the famed soccer star, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, with Pele’s manager Paul Kemsley, the series will “delve into his life in New York in the mid-‘70s while playing for the Cosmos alongside other international players.”
