Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 1, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
AOL is launching its first-ever long-form original series. Connected, a popular documentary-style international series is being adapted for American audiences, focusing on five New Yorkers who film their lives for six months. Family, sexual orientation, wealth and income, gender, and marital status are all themes in the show, which will be available for free and is set to debut at AOL’s NewFronts on April 29.
Amazon has greenlit six new series and renewed Garry Trudeau’s Alpha House for another season, according to Variety. The list of new shows includes The After from X-Files creator Chris Carter as well as two kids’ original series. The other three programs are a police show, Bosch, and two half-hour comedies, Mozart in the Jungle and Transparent. They will kick off either later this year or early in 2015.
CBSNews.com‘s "Eye on America" series provides an ongoing, in-depth look at retirement, to inform news consumers on what retirement means in today’s world. The coverage will span three months and feature on-demand video from CBS News financial analyst Mellody Hobson, profiles of retirees, interactive tools, polling data, and interviews with elected officials, among other things.
Free movies and TV shows for kids are now available from PopcornflixKids, an ad-supported streaming movie platform available on the web and Roku as well as iOS and Android devices. The sister site to PopcornFlix offers up family-friendly shows that range from musicals and animated to programs solely in Spanish.
Yahoo is looking to build up its video offerings and the word from Recode is that part of the company’s plan is to steal a few YouTube stars away from the Google-owned site. Yahoo doesn’t want to launch its own standalone video site but is aiming to beef up its individual talent and channels. "Yahoo executives have told video makers and owners that the company can offer them better economics than they’re getting on YouTube, either by improving the ad revenue or by offering guaranteed ad rates for their videos," Recode reports. Yahoo’s video effort is expected to launch in the next few months.
Pluto.TV has launched a video platform that features nearly 100 curated channels organized into such categories as music, sports, news, entertainment, comedy, lifestyle, technology, art & culture, education, and kids. It has partnered with such content creators as Funny or Die, QVC, Refinery29, RocketJump, The Young Turks, and IconicTV (JAY Z’s Life+Times) as well. It is available on all devices so consumers can start content on one and continue watching on another.
Comedian and country singer Ray Stevens has launched the first installment in his weekly web series, Rayality TV. "Over the years I have produced hours and hours of videotape and film footage for TV shows, TV pilots, movies, stage shows, concerts and music videos," the 75-year-old Stevens said, according to theboot.com. "Recently I sorted it all out, linked it together with some new footage and produced a series of programs for the web." The show is set to run for 78 weeks and will feature such guest stars as Steve Martin and Louise Mandrell.
Starz kicked off MIPTV on Monday with the world-premiere screening of its new show, Power, and a q&a with its executive producer, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson. The show’s first season will have eight episodes and tell the story of a wealthy New York City nightclub owner who caters to the city’s elite.
The Supreme Court is expected to hear the case against Aereo on April 22 and a decision should come before June. The word from CBS President Les Moonves is that if Aereo wins, CBS may build its own version of Aereo that would stream the network’s content over the web with a subscription model. It would also have DVR capabilities built in.
The Los Angeles Dodgers played their first game on American soil this season Sunday night but a slew of the team’s fans weren’t able to watch their beloved ballplayers lose, thanks to a standoff between DirecTV and the Dodgers. The Hollywood Reporter says that Time Warner Cable is asking major cable and satellite distributors to fork over around $4 per customer per month for the right of showcasing the SportsNet LA channel, which is owned by the Dodgers.
California’s central San Joaquin Valley is about to gain 20 new digital TV channels, thanks to the work of Cocola Broadcasting and Ventura TV. This will mean residents will now have access to an Armenian-, Hindi-, and Arabic-language stations as well as the Cartoon Network.

NewFronts Preview [4/24] We’ll review the past few NewFronts and talk to Digital Publishers, Programmers & Agencies/Brands to find out what worked, what didn’t, and what are the 2014 expectations.
NewFronts Wrap-up [5/9] We’ll take a look at all of the breaking news that came out this year, as well as all of the highlights + new buying strategies that were presented.
YouTube has informed marketers that it will offer audience guarantees to advertisers that make advance commitments, the Wall Street Journal reports, in hopes that it can move some of the dollars that are going to traditional TV over to its own bank account. In addition, YT will "guarantee to air ads across its channels until they reach a certain percentage of the target audience that the marketer is trying to reach," the Journal notes. This is totally new ground for YouTube other than a small test last year. Those pledges "will make it easier for chief marketing officers to feel more comfortable about moving ad budgets that weren’t earmarked for YouTube or online video to Google," Jordan Bitterman, chief strategy officer of media-buying firm Mindshare, told the Journal. In addition, YouTube is also putting more effort toward going after marketers that generally buy space on cable channels.
A new report from IgnitionOne shows that the first quarter was strong for search advertising on mobile devices and programmatic display advertising. Key findings included:
* US search saw advertising spend and search spend up 8% from the same time period last year.
* US spending growth year over year for tablets is up 79% while smartphones spend is up 107%.
* Yahoo!/Bing Network held on to its US search market share in the first quarter with 22.9% of spend vs. Google’s 77.1%. The precious quarter saw Yahoo!/Bing with 22.7%.
Some expected Amazon to introduce its competitor to Apple TV tomorrow, but the company is denying it, according to DigitalTVEurope. Recode.net reports that Amazon has sent out invites to a "video business" media event on April 2 in New York. The invites feature a couch and popcorn. TechCrunch expects the new device to be similar to Google’s Chromecast dongle. Meanwhile, Macrumors.com reports that Apple users have been expecting a "revamped Apple TV" to be introduced this month.
LiveU has announced its new DataBridge Solution that allows field reporters to edit their content onsite and send their story back to the news desk. The product is designed to meet broadcasters’ need to handle high capacity data and Internet applications in any location.
The World Cup is coming in June and it will be the most digitally connected one of all time, which means that it’s likely become the largest online sporting event in history. Four years ago, more than 26 million hours of online World Cup video content was consumed. A survey from YuMe, as reported by RealSEO, shows how the growth in mobile devices since then is bound to make this Cup a huge online sensation.
* 63% of the 879 individuals surveyed intend to watch highlights via a PC, 23% on smartphone, and 25% on a tablet device.
* Live streaming of matches will be popular across all devices: PC 33%, tablet 22%, smartphone 11%, smart TV 13%.
* 74% intend to watch World Cup matches from either a bar, friend’s home, or at work.
* Over 54% of respondents intend to watch online video of completed matches.
* Around 50% of viewers intend to watch online video of previous World Cup matches
Activision is closing down the English mobile game developer The Blast Furnace, resulting in the loss of 47 jobs, Gamespot.com reports. Blast Furnace developed the mobile versions of Call of Duty: Strike Team, Pitfall, and Pitfall.
Machinima has a new CEO in Chad Gutstein. As COO of the Ovation television network, Gutstein grew the net from five million households to close to 55 million.
Hulu has introduced Craig Erwich as its new Senior Vice President, Head of Content. Erwich recently worked at Warner Horizon Television and is responsible for creating such series as Pretty Little Liars, The Voice, The Bachelorette, House, Prison Break, and 24.
