IN THE NEWS

Fox News Media filed a reply in support of its motion to dismiss the $2.7 billion defamation lawsuit by electronic voting company Smartmatic. “Seeking to impose billions of dollars in liability for [Fox’s] coverage goes beyond a chilling effect: It poses a direct threat to the reporting of newsworthy allegations on which our democracy depends,” argued Kirkland & Ellis’ Paul Clement. “Reporting both the allegations and the denials is critical to the truth-seeking function, not an invitation for groundless lawsuits.” Fox News lawyers also filed briefs on behalf of defendants Maria Bartiramo, Jeanine Pirro and Lou Dobbs.

WarnerMedia’s Turner Sports struck a seven-year deal with the NHL, sharing rights with ESPN beginning with the 2021-22 season. “This agreement with the National Hockey League brings one of the most prestigious championships in sports to TNT and fuels our entire Turner Sports and Bleacher Report portfolio with even more premium content,” said Jeff Zucker, Chairman of WarnerMedia News and Sports. NBC Sports had pulled out of negotiations for the package, leaving it without an NHL deal for the first time in 16 years.

Comscore renewed and expanded its deal to provide ViacomCBS with national TV measurement, an agreement that enables the media company to guarantee its traditional linear advertising campaigns on Comscore’s national TV currency. “Under its new ownership structure, Comscore is making meaningful strides in investment, engineering, and product innovation to support the industry’s evolving needs as a cornerstone measurement provider,” said John Halley, ViacomCBS COO of Advertising Revenue. “We believe Comscore can drive significant value for ViacomCBS, helping us achieve our goals around cross-screen measurement, while supporting our efforts toward a diversified currency strategy.”

Netflix released a preview of its summer slate, with new films dropping every week between April and August. First up: horror movie “Things Heard and Seen,” starring Amanda Seyfried, on April 29.

Cynopsis is sharing the results of our State of Media & TV Upfronts – a survey of media & TV/Video production execs on expectations and insights on the upfront markets. One year into the pandemic, there has emerged a degree of industry clarity (or at least building consensus) around certain aspects of the industry, but there remain many differences of opinion and unknowns, primarily related to how the industry’s structure will evolve over the next few years. Check out some key findings and download the full (19 page!) report here.

Writer/producer/director Eric Heisserer, writer and producer Christine Boylan, and production company Hivemind (“The Witcher”) have partnered with Paradox Interactive to develop the World of Darkness story universe for film and television. World of Darkness launched in 1991 with a tabletop roleplaying game, “Vampire: The Masquerade,” and the universe now includes video games, virtual reality, card and board games, comic books, novels, and original tabletop roleplaying games. “The World of Darkness story universe is deliberately and unapologetically inclusive and diverse,” said Boylan. “It has always made a point of including equal gendered characters, protagonists and antagonists of every race, and representation of all creeds – bringing a female and diverse audience to gaming like nothing prior.”

UPFRONTS

Canela.TV, a streaming services for US Hispanics, will host its first Upfront presentation next month. Themed “We Make It Happen / Lo Hacemos Posible,” the virtual event will take place May 17 at 3p, hosted by Canela Media founder and CEO Isabel Rafferty. In addition to highlighting Canela.TV’s programming slate, the event will showcase how advertisers can tap into the diversity and scale of Hispanic audiences with a platform built exclusively for Latinos by Latinos, powered by Canela Media, a female and minority-owned company.

“We are tremendously excited to be joining the virtual Upfront stage this year for the first time to showcase our approach to Hispanic-focused streaming,” said Rafferty. “Canela.TV has been growing at a phenomenal pace, thanks to our focus on a demographic that has been undervalued in the past by most major streamers. This has allowed us to deliver Hispanic audiences at scale with best-in-class technology capabilities and rich first-party data – giving advertisers valuable opportunities that they won’t be able to find with legacy media players.”
