IN THE NEWS

With the contract between Roku and Google’s YouTube TV set to expire, Roku warned customers in an email that the service could soon go dark. Roku is accusing Google of “attempting to use its YouTube monopoly position to force Roku into accepting predatory, anti-competitive and discriminatory terms that will directly harm” Roku and its users. The issue isn’t money, according to Roku, but centers on Google trying to keep Roku from displaying search results from third-party services when users have the YouTube app open, and making Roku agree to future hardware specs.

Responding to Roku,YouTube TV said, “We’re disappointed that they chose to make baseless claims while we continue our ongoing negotiations. All of our work with them has been focused on ensuring a high quality and consistent experience for our viewers. We have made no requests to access user data or interfere with search results. We hope we can resolve this for the sake of our mutual users.”

Gen X marks the spot: Nextstar Media is launching diginet Rewind TV, which will feature sitcoms from the 1980s and 1990s, on September 1. Series include the likes of “Murphy Brown,” “Growing Pains,” “Family Ties” and “Who’s the Boss?”, among others. At launch, Rewind TV will reach 40% of US homes, and serve as a companion to Nexstar’s Antenna TV, which airs shows from the 1960s and 1970s. “This year marks Antenna TV’s 10-year anniversary, and it continues growing and finding new audiences,” said Sean Compton, President of Nexstar Media’s Networks Division. “To complement Antenna TV’s strong following with baby boomers, we created Rewind TV to give Gen X viewers a network dedicated to their own nostalgic comedy classics.”

NBC News named Tom Llamas as Senior National Correspondent. “Tom brings with him more than two decades of experience tenaciously covering the news across multiple platforms and for many different audiences,” said NBC News president Noah Oppenheim. “Our viewers expect us to bring them smart and trustworthy journalism, wherever they are, and we’re thrilled that Tom will be bringing his expertise and passion to NBC News, NBC News Now and beyond.” Llamas left his position as ABC News Chief National Affairs Correspondent in January.

Carrie Ann Inaba is taking a leave of absence from “The Talk,” to “focus on my health and well being,” she wrote on Twitter. The absence of Inaba, who has shared her struggles with a variety of chronic health conditions over the years, leaves the CBS daytimer two hosts short, since Sharon Osbourne, who left a month ago amid a swirl of controversy, has not yet been replaced.
