Snapchat added 15 million new users in 1Q21, and the number of daily active users rose 22% year-over-year, to hit 280 million. “We began 2021 by achieving our highest year-over-year revenue and daily active user growth rates in over three years during the quarter, and delivering positive free cash flow for the first time in Snap’s history as a public company,” said CEO Evan Spiegel. “The strength of our business underscores our relentless focus on product innovation and is a testament to our team’s ability to execute well together over the long term.”

The government of India ordered Twitter to take down over 50 tweets that were critical of the country’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Twitter withheld the tweets from users India, as the devastated nation sets record infection records.

Among the highlights at Apple’s “Spring Loaded” event last week were UWB lost item finder AirTag, a redesigned Podcast app, new M1-powered iMacs and M1-powered iPad Pros, and a new Apple TV 4K. New “Apple Card Family” allows users to share their card with family members over 13, with customizable spending limits, and iPhone 12 and iPone 12 mini phones have a new color option: purple.

Google and Roku were among the companies that took down botnet PARETO, made up of close to a million infected mobile Android devices pretending to be people watching ads on CTV platforms. Cybersecurity company HUMAN and the Human Collective led the disruption efforts.

Google introduced a series of policies and new developer support to reduce the risk of user harm from misinformation, including:
· To ensure public safety, information integrity and privacy, Google introduced specific requirements for COVID-19 apps. Apps related to sensitive use cases, such as those providing testing information, must be endorsed by either official governmental entities or healthcare organizations.
· To promote transparency in news publishing, Google introduced minimum requirements that apps must meet in order for developers to declare their app as a “News” app on Google Play.
· Processes across Google Play are focused on elections to provide additional support, including support for government agencies, specially trained app reviewers, and a safety team to address election threats and abuse.
“Our core efforts around identifying and mitigating bad apps and developers continued to evolve to address new adversarial behaviors and forms of abuse,” said Krish Vitaldevara, Director of Product Management Trust & Safety, Google Play, in a blog post. “Our machine-learning detection capabilities and enhanced app review processes prevented over 962k policy-violating app submissions from getting published to Google Play. We also banned 119k malicious and spammy developer accounts. Additionally, we significantly increased our focus on SDK enforcement, as we’ve found these violations have an outsized impact on security and user data privacy.”

Instagram announced tools aimed at dealing with bullying and harassment. One feature filters DMs for abusive content based on a list of words and emojis; users will also have the ability to proactively block people.

Friend MTS, a global provider of content protection services, announced an expanded partnership with Akamai, the intelligent edge platform for securing and delivering digital experiences. The companies will now offer content owners, broadcasters and operators a new smart server-side A/B variant watermarking solution based on the Friend MTS ASiD OTT Edge-switched technology and Akamai’s Access Revocation solution / technology, giving Akamai access to an additional method of watermarking premium content with an accelerated watermark extraction.

Blockchain Coinvestors announced the launch of Blockchain Coinvestors Swiss in partnership with Ordway Selections, part of a Swiss family office. “The global transition towards a world of digital monies and assets is gaining momentum and we expect blockchain and crypto companies and projects to benefit from the accelerating value creation in the space,” said Blockchain Coinvesters Managing Partner Alison Davis.

Marketing technology start-up Marc Media announced the release of Marc, the first video brochure powered with global 5G technology. Through a partnership with AT&T, Marc Media gives brands the ability to launch multi-media campaigns, interact with audiences, and collect first-person data. Campaigns provide real-time insights into audience behavior and interests by tracking open rates, impressions, interactions, locations and re-engagements.

Kantar has launched a new tool that uses data visualization of SVOD market share, broken down by region. The tool is based on Kantar’s Entertainment on Demand service, which tracks the digital subscription customer journey across music and video. The data is based on a quarterly survey which provides insight into digital subscriptions from purchase triggers, through consideration, evaluation, intention to purchase, post-purchase usage, satisfaction/ dissatisfaction, advocacy, loyalty and switching.

MEASURING UP

Nielsen announced the launch of Nielsen Streaming Video Ratings, a syndicated service that provides visibility into total viewership and advanced audience demographic insights by streaming platform alongside linear TV ratings. “Now more than ever, it’s important for our clients to have a clear understanding of the streaming landscape, both from a program or content perspective, which our SVOD service does, as well as at a macro view of audience consumption that takes into account the total use of streaming platforms comparable to linear TV,” said Kevin Rini, SVP Product Management, Nielsen.

Comscore struck a new strategic partnership with DISH Media, extending its data license to vMVPD Sling TV. The agreement includes the continued cross-platform measurement of advanced advertising and content via Comscore TV products. The expanded license agreement protects consumer privacy data and includes first party matching rights to improve accuracy of campaign results and national addressable measurement of programming networks.

IRI announced an expansion of its omnichannel measurement capabilities to offer coverage of the omnichannel universe with the launch of two new solutions: IRI OmniMarket and IRI OmniConsumer. “We have been on a journey to assemble the assets required to comprehensively measure omnichannel share and consumer behavior and the addition of the 1.5-million-member receipt panel is the final piece of this solution,” said Andrew Appel, president and CEO of IRI.

Lotame announced 11 data partners, including Dun & Bradstreet, ShareThis, and Throtle, will support Lotame Panorama ID, a global, people-based, privacy-compliant and interoperable identity solution for a cookieless open web. “Dun & Bradstreet’s data will continue to be targetable, even in the absence of third-party cookies,” said Stacy Greiner, CMO at Dun & Bradstreet. “We realize that the approach going forward will be multi-faceted, and we are committed to giving our clients a choice. ProVantageX has partnered with FreeWheel, A Comcast Company, to integrate their local TV automation and optimization software into FreeWheel’s Strata ad management platform. The integration allows users of Strata, which delivers converged video solutions and partnership capabilities to over 1,100 agencies, to receive output from PVX, a full, end-to-end platform for buyers and sellers of local television that automates ratings estimating, schedule optimization, activation and stewardship.

Many advertisers elevated their branded content and influencer marketing programs as the pandemic and social justice movement disrupted advertising-as-usual, according to Advertiser Perceptions’ Branded Content and Influencer Marketing Report. Throughout the second half of 2020, 32% increased spending on branded content and 25% spent more to back influencers, putting 20% of their digital budgets into these complementary practices, which is more than they put into paid search (14%), display (13%), paid social (12%), or digital video (12%). “Many advertisers returned from lockdowns without their supply systems fully in place, so they had to prioritize upper-funnel activity again,” said Sarah Bolton, EVP/Business Intelligence at Advertiser Perceptions. “Because it seemed insensitive to hard-sell products, they leaned on influencer marketing to drive awareness and humanize their brands.”

AT&T’s data-enabled technology platform Xandr shared results of premium video and CTV spend on its platform for 1Q21. Total digital video spend globally grew 75% year-over-year, with the primary driver CTV; total global platform spend rose 235%. Video now represents 35% of overall spend on Xandr’s platform. Growth in international platform spend is contributing significantly to Xandr’s overall global platform growth; total platform spend in Xandr’s markets outside of the United States grew 30% year-over-year, with video spend up 55% and spend up 211%.

Semcasting announced the addition of sophisticated contextual insights into AudienceDesigner Data Center through an integration with Advanced Contextual.
“Integrating the Advanced Contextual targeting capabilities into the ADS Data Center reinforces our positioning as a self-serve, one-stop-shop for identity and marketing data,” said Ray Kingman, founder and CEO of Semcasting. “Brands want an answer to the cookie-free identity question, and they also want to be able to create alignment between their CRM audiences and the media they engage with. ADS uniquely addresses the post-cookie identity issue and Advance Contextual provides terrific on demand media alignment.”

AcuityAds, the technology company that enables advertisers to connect intelligently with audiences across digital advertising campaigns from a single platform, announced an integration with Amazon Publisher Services. Through the integration with APS’s Transparent Ad Marketplace, advertisers that leverage AcuityAds’ technology, including the advertising automation platform, illumin, will gain direct access to high quality inventory including premium publishers from a variety of verticals on desktop, mobile web and mobile apps across gaming, lifestyle, music, news and dating verticals.

Extreme Reach, the asset management solution for TV and video advertising, has agreed to acquire Adstream, provider of digital asset management, creative logistics and analytics solutions. Through the acquisition, Extreme Reach will provide brand with an all-in-one brand activation platform. “This acquisition gives us the global scale to transform creative asset management and omni channel campaign activation worldwide, setting a new standard that meets today’s challenges,” said Tim Conley, CEO and co-founder of Extreme Reach.

Ad fraud rates are improving, but brand risk is rising globally, according to Integral Ad Science’s H2 2020 Media Quality Report. As consumers continued to focus on digital media during stay-at-home orders, viewability rates showed mixed results. CTV viewability reached 93.3% globally, while mobile app video, another new metric for H2 2020, followed closely at 92.6%. Mobile web video viewability followed at 73.7%. IAS data also indicated that brand risk increased across several categories. Adult content was the primary driver of increased brand risk across all formats globally, generally followed by hate speech.

Innovid announced the launch of Programmatic Interactive Connected TV, a solution to scale the delivery of engaging CTV ad experiences through programmatic buying. Interactive CTV ad formats incorporate advanced features and functionality to boost creative performance. The consortium was architected to organize the leading buy-side and sell-side programmatic platforms, connecting the ad tech ecosystem and delivering against the promise of interactive CTV creative at scale. “The lack of standardization across CTV has historically forced advertisers to choose between the targetability and efficiency that programmatic buying offers, versus the ROI boosting engagement interactive CTV provides,” said Zvika Netter, CEO and co-founder at Innovid. “As the only omni-channel platform with the infrastructure required to support interactive creative on TV, we knew Innovid had to lead the way by connecting the largest independent CTV players in the market through a single, integrated marketplace.”

STREAMING

Virtual and hybrid event platform Glisser announced the launch of its own video streaming service, Glisser Stream, allowing Glisser customers to run their virtual event sessions directly through the Glisser platform. Attendees can log in to Glisser’s SaaS platform where they’ll start receiving the video conference or live broadcast.

New ID, which distributes South Korean entertainment content on CTV and OTT platforms across Asia, Europe and the US, has chosen Unruly as its preferred global supply-side platform. The partnership will connect media buyers with premium global video inventory which can be bought programmatically through Unruly’s SSP, UnrulyX.

Atmosphere, focused on streaming TV for businesses, announced a $25 million Series B investment from Valor Equity Partners. Chicago-based Valor is a growth-focused investment firm; Valor previously invested in Atmosphere’s Series A round through its Valor Siren Ventures Fund alongside S3 Ventures.

Kids social streaming app Zigazoo has completed a $4 million seed funding round, with investors including Serena Williams’ Serena Ventures, Jimmy Kimmel’s Wheelhouse Entertainment, MaC Venture Capital, Talis Capital, Pocket.Watch Founder Chris Williams, Jazwares Partner Jeremy Padawer, manager and producer James Dixon, and MasterClass Head of Talent Matthew Rutler.
