Before it even got out of the gate, the European Super League’s time may be running out. With news that the proposed group of heavyweight teams would be forming their own org, widespread condemnation from fans, brands, platforms and governments has now prompted every UK team in Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and likely Chelsea to withdraw from the proposed league, according to ESPN, with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid also on the verge of pulling out, according to multiple publications. UEFA warned clubs looking to join that it might impose sanctions against clubs and players who take part in the breakaway league while UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson condemned the proposal.
PROGRAMMING
Nominations for the 42nd Sports Emmy Awards were revealed by the national Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, lead by ESPN for the network and network group races, scooping 54 and 41 nods, respectively, followed by NFL Network with 27 nominations, FOX with 26 and CBS with 22. CBS Sports’ coverage of Super Bowl LV led as the event with the most nominations, notching 11.
Peacock and NBC Olympics announced that the Tokyo Olympics will be heading to Peacock, which will carry four live studio shows every day that will allow fans to “catch-up and keep up on the must-see moments of the Summer Games.” Beginning July 24, the day after the Opening Ceremony, the four shows will stream for free on Tokyo NOW, Peacock’s channel for live coverage, highlights, interviews, and the best stories of the Games. Coverage begins with Tokyo LIVE at 6a, followed by Tokyo Golf at 11a, On Her Turf at the Olympics at 7p and Tokyo Tonight at 7:30p. “Peacock is thrilled to stream the most anticipated Olympics in history,” said Jen Brown, SVP of Topical Programming and Development for Peacock. “Our shows on the Tokyo NOW channel will give audiences the latest and greatest from the Games, including live competition each morning and quality coverage every night, all for free.”
Meanwhile, award-winning producer Rob Hyland, who joined NBC Sports in 1997, has been named the producer of NBC Olympics’ primetime show, beginning with this summer’s Tokyo Olympics. “Rob has excelled in every production role he has worked at NBC Sports, and we are excited to have him lead our primetime NBC presentation,” said Molly Solomon, Executive Producer & President, NBC Olympics Production. “Whether it’s the Olympics, Football Night in America, Notre Dame Football, or Triple Crown horse racing, Rob’s expertise in the competition coupled with his creative thinking and innovative spirit have resulted in dynamic, compelling coverage.”
Telemundo Deportes, meanwhile, delivers the most extensive Olympic coverage ever in Spanish-language media with over 300 hours of Tokyo 2020 programming in store. Telemundo network will present 187 hours of live competitions and daily recap specials, while its cable network Universo will provide 122 hours of live coverage. The entire linear offering will also be available live via TelemundoDeportes.com and the Telemundo Deportes app. Coverage begins July 21 with the Women’s Soccer Competition live on Universo at 3a.
CBS Sports locked in a new multi-year rights agreement with PokerGO to serve as its new television partner for the World Series of Poker Main Event and select WSOP Bracelet Events. Beginning in 2021, CBS Sports Network will be the exclusive domestic television home of the WSOP, featuring 15 hours of Main Event coverage and 36 hours of 18 additional Gold Bracelet events. “CBS Sports has long been a pioneer in covering a broad range of championship sports,” said Ty Stewart, WSOP Executive Director. “We couldn’t be more excited to see increased television coverage of the WSOP in the coming years and benefit from their growing media platforms.”

Jason Benetti will provide play-by-play for the Statcast-driven alternate presentation with analyst Eduardo Perez and MLB.com Statcast Insider Mike Petriello. Sunday Night Baseball Presented by Taco Bell: Statcast Edition content is driven by data and information from Statcast, including custom video and graphics as well as analysis and commentary. The trio will also host a Statcast-driven alternate presentation for Baseball Tonight on ESPN2 starting at 6:30 p.m. ET, leading into the game telecast.
Las Vegas hosts a double bill with PBR’s Unleash The Beast- Las Vegas Invitational and the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo- Vegas Showdown from June 11-13. PBR will for the first time co-produce the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo, bringing fans an event that includes Bareback Riding, Tie Down Roping, Bull Dogging, Ladies Barrel racing, Ladies Steer Undecorating, Bull Riding and Junior Break Away on Sunday, June 13. The Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo will be broadcast at 1p on CBS on June 19.
The Scripps National Spelling Bee will introduce new elements to its nationally broadcast competition this year with competition starting June 12 with the preliminaries, followed by the June 15 quarterfinals and concluding June 27 with the semifinals. The fourth and final round of the competition, featuring 10-12 accomplished spellers, will be hosted in person at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando on July 8 and broadcast live in primetime on ESPN2. With the new format of this year’s competition, the Bee will introduce word meaning, an oral vocabulary component, to its live national broadcasts. Word meaning will be part of each round of the national competition. During the in-person July 8 finals, the Bee will have the option to activate a spell-off if needed. The spell-off would be activated in the closing minutes of the July 8 finals if a champion has not yet been declared in a traditional, one-person, one-word round.

Athletes Unlimited announced that Bat Club USA signed on as the signature bat service partner for Athletes Unlimited’s second softball season. In addition to supplying premium bats during the season, elements of the partnership include working with Athletes Unlimited and several players to create a digital training series.

NFL Media and Hulu locked in a new multi-year carriage agreement to bring NFL Network and NFL RedZone to Hulu’s live TV subscription streaming service Hulu + Live TV by Aug. 1. “We are excited to bring NFL Network and NFL RedZone to Hulu + Live TV subscribers,” said Hans Schroeder, EVP and Chief Operating Officer of NFL Media. “One of our top priorities as a League remains broadening the distribution platforms for NFL content, and so we’re very pleased to bring our lineup of award-winning shows and live games to Hulu’s live subscribers starting in the 2021 NFL season.”
The Professional Fighters League announced a new, multi-year partnership that names DraftKings as the Official Sportsbook and Daily Fantasy Partner of the PFL. To start the upcoming season, wagering on PFL fights via DraftKings will be available for fans across the country, pending regulatory approvals. The multi-faceted partnership will give MMA, daily fantasy and sports betting fans a unique viewing and gaming experience utilizing PFL’s proprietary SmartCage technology. As Official Sportsbook and Daily Fantasy Partner of the PFL, live odds will be integrated into each event broadcast across ESPN networks and streaming platforms. Additionally, DraftKings will offer cash prizes coupled with PFL-branded pools tied to the league’s regular season, playoffs and championship events.
MLB.TV reports record streaming numbers through the first three weekends of the season. The beginning of the season marked the most-watched 18-day period in the 20-season history of MLB.TV. During the 18-day period from Opening Day through April 18th, fans watched more than 1.34 billion minutes of live games on MLB.TV, a 12% increase compared to the first 18 days of last season and up 43% when compared to the same time period of the 2019 season. In addition, total games watched on the league’s out-of-market streaming platform are up 22% compared to last season and 35% compared to 2019.
The WTA has announced the release of WTA Scores, a new live scoring app available immediately for download on iOS and Android devices and offering fans real-time updates from all WTA Tour matches across the season directly to mobile devices.
