04/17/19: Tokyo’s Olympic Plans a boost for Primetime; MLB feels the Brotherly Love; Puma ties up deal with LaLiga

Good morning. It’s Wednesday April 17, 2019 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
 
The IOC revealed event plans for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, running from July 24-Aug. 9 in 2020, with a slate of key events slated to run in primetime in the US. Rowing and archery get underway on the day of the Opening Ceremony, while gold medal activity will begin on Day 1 with the women’s 10m air rifle and 11 medals awarded overall on that day, with others coming in archery, cycling, fencing, judo, taekwondo and weightlifting. Meanwhile, the released schedule lists swimming, track and beach volleyball finals to take place in the morning, a 13 hour difference with NY time, allowing them to be carried in primetime stateside. However, other sports such as gymnastics, soccer and other sports will remain with traditional afternoon and evening start times. The Saturday before the Aug. 9 closing ceremony will feature 30 finals, including championship games in men’s basketball, soccer and baseball.
 

 

 PROGRAMMING
 
MLB is bringing the 2026 All-Star Game to Philadelphia, which will be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. “It’s been an exciting spring here in Philadelphia,” said Manfred. “I’m here to make official one of the worst-kept secrets in America: The 2026 All-Star Game has been awarded to the Phillies and the city of Philadelphia. Baseball has a special place in our culture, and it’s only fitting that we are here to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our country.”
 
The 2019 NFL schedule is set to be released tonight on NFL Network, the NFL App, andNFL.com.NFL Network’s coverage will be highlighted by 2019 NFL Schedule Release, Presented by Verizon at 8p, a two-hour special hosted by Colleen Wolfe and featuring analysts Steve Mariucci and Maurice Jones-Drew in studio. The special will break down the entire 2019 NFL regular season schedule, division by division, analyzing the top matchups and primetime games, including the Thursday Night Football schedule across FOX and NFL Network.
 
With more numbers in the books, CBS Sports’ final-round coverage of the 2019 Masters saw live coverage on Sunday morning averaging10.8 million viewers, making it the most-watched morning golf broadcast in 32 years, with the final-round peaking with 18.3 million viewers from 2:15-2:30p. Sunday’s combined Masters coverage, including the encore presentation, was watched in all-or-part by 37.2 million viewers, according to Nielsen, 41%vs. 2018’s live only coverage and the most-watched Sunday coverage of the Masters since 2013. The encore presentation of the final round averaged 4.5 million viewers. Meanwhile, CBS Sports reports that its live streaming coverage of the 2019 Masters Tournament drew record viewership across CBS and Masters digital platforms with more than 1 billion total minutes of coverage streamed from Thursday-Sunday and an average minute audience of 447,000.
 
FOX Sports reports that the first NHRA race to run on the broadcast channel this season drew an average of 902,000 viewers. That marks a rise of 11% over viewership for 2018 races on the network.
 
ABC announced plans to add American Idol judge Luke Bryan and mentor Bobby Bones to the network’s lineup of talent participating in the network’s first-time primetime coverage of the NFL Draft, which starts on April 25 at 8p. Bones will also be seen on the second night of coverage. Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts and ESPN’s Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit are among other names tapped to headline night one of ABC’s coverage
 
FloSports and SPIRE announced a multiyear partnership to offer live and on-demand coverage of the Freedom Bowl on FloFootball.com through 2022. The high school football showcase event takes place during Labor Day Weekend this year from Aug. 29-31 on FloFootball.
 
The Olympic Channel is set to offer live online coverage of “Sal 2019”, the inaugural 2019 Africa beach Games, which take place June 14-23 June, in Capo Verde. Approximately 1,000 athletes from 54 countries from the African continent will compete in 11 sports including athletics, 3×3 basketball, beach handball, beach soccer, beach tennis, beach volleyball, sea rowing, freestyle football, karate kata, kiteboarding and open water swimming.
 
In radio news, SiriusXM announced that Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Cheryl Miller, former NBA team executive Ryan McDonough, and veteran NBA analysts Sarah Kustok and Michael Grady have joined the roster of hosts on SiriusXM’s exclusive NBA channel, SiriusXM NBA Radio. Miller hosts every Friday on No Look Pass, which airs from 1-4p while McDonough, Kustok and Grady can be heard on various SiriusXM NBA Radio shows.
 
Elsewhere, New York City Football Club and ESPN Deportes Radio WEPN-AM 1050 announced that all remaining 2019 Regular Season NYCFC games and all postseason play will air in Spanish on the ESPN App in conjunction with ESPN Deportes Radio 1050AM.
 
MSG Networks announced the upcoming launch of its new weeknight show, ‘MSG 150,’ which will provide viewers with a look into the New York sports scene and nightly conversation around the teams. The show will air for ten weeks every Monday through Thursday from 8-10:30p starting May, hosted by Bill Pidto, alongside Knicks analyst Alan Hahn.
 
UNINTERRUPTED and Chase announced a new extension of the Kneading Dough Podcast series, titled Branching Out, and running as a special, five-episode mini-series. Each episode of Branching Out is hosted by former NFL star Andrew Hawkins.

Warfare Sports announced its entry into the marketplace, looking to deliver boxing action as a direct to consumer application. The company offered plans to carry 24 live events over the next year in addition to shoulder programming. Already signed on to handle on-air commentary is Al Bernstein, Megan Anderson and Marc Abrams, according to reports.
 
NBC Sports Gold’s “Pro Motocross Pass” is open for business now, being offered $54.99, providing U.S. and international moto fans with streaming coverage of the 2019 Lucas Oil Motocross Championship season, including all 250 and 450 class races this season.
 
 
ESPORTS

 

ELEAGUE and Xbox teamed up for a new partnership designed to celebrate the Gears of War amid the release of Gears 5 later this year. ELEAGUE signed on to produce six, hour-long feature episodes spotlighting pro Gears of War competitions, including deeper looks into the lives of star players as they train and perform around the world. ELEAGUE Gears Summer Series: The Bonds and Betrayals of Brotherhood will debut June 14 at 11p on TBS. In addition to the TBS episodes, ELEAGUE will officially reveal new Gears 5 multiplayer gameplay when it hosts the latest title’s first-ever esports tournament, from July 13-14, with live coverage available on Twitch and B/R Live. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, NetherRealm Studios and Intersport announced the debut of Mortal Kombat 11 Pro Kompetition 2019/2020, with the inaugural season of the series showcasing the upcoming installment of the Mortal Kombatfranchise. This year, the Mortal Kombat 11 Pro Kompetitionwill offer players a shot to compete in nine different live tournaments across North America, Latin America and Europe, as well as multiple online events, with a $155,000 prize pool up for grabs and the opportunity to qualify for one of 12 spots in Final Kombat. The first stop on North America’s Pro Kompetition will run May 24-26 at Combo Breaker 2019 in Chicago. The top 16 players from the various events will qualify for Final Kombat, the championship finale, and have the chance to take home an additional cut of a $100,000 USD prize pool. Final Kombat is scheduled for Q1 of 2020, again in Chicago.
 
Caffeine continues to reel in content deals, this time announcing a media partnership with DreamHack that will see all DreamHack CS:GO and Dota 2 events streamed live in addition to the launch of a new DreamHack-dedicated show Overtime that will run on Caffeine throughout the year. The new series debuts live from the DreamHack Open Rio 2019 from April 19-21, and include coverage of CORSAIR DreamHack Masters in Dallas, Texas (June 2019) and Malmö, Sweden (October 2019); as well as and DreamHack Open events in Atlanta, Georgia (November 2019), Tours, France (May 2019), Summer and Winter (Jönköping, Sweden), Rotterdam, Netherlands (October 2019) and Sevilla, Spain (December 2019).

UFC announced that Peter Dropick has been promoted to Executive Vice President, Event Development and Operations. Dropick oversees key components of UFC’s global live events, including scheduling, venue management, event operations, and ticket sales. In recent years, the scope of his responsibilities has also evolved to include event marketing and P&L management. Dropick now oversees UFC‘s live event operations across North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, with 42 live events planned in 2019.
 
In other MMA news, ONE Championship announced a multi-year seven-figure partnership with Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts, the independent governing body for the sport of mixed martial arts worldwide. As part of this partnership, ONE Championship will support GAMMA’s efforts to obtain Olympic recognition for mixed martial arts. In addition, ONE will also work with GAMMA to develop and promote best practices in health and safety standards, anti-doping regulations, and competition rules for the daily safe practice of competitive mixed martial arts at the amateur level.

 

THE NORTHERN TRUST, the first event of the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup Playoffs set for August 6-11, 2019 at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, has hired Steve Kalmanas the tournament’s Head of Sales. Kalman was previously Sales Manager for 98.7 ESPN New York and prior to that worked for WFAN- CBS NY, where he oversaw sales for the Mets, Giants, and Yankees.  Steve has more than 25 years of experience in the tri-state market. As Head of Sales, Steve will lead all Northeast sales efforts for the first event in the FedExCup Playoffs.
 
Pac-12 Networks announced today that Steve Tsengwill join the Pac-12 as Executive Vice President, Sales, effective May 13. In his new role, Tseng will be responsible for revenue growth across sponsorship, advertising, branded content and related Pac-12 assets, based out of Pac-12 headquarters in San Francisco and reporting into Pac-12 Networks President Mark Shuken.
 
The XFL named Janet Duch, most recently Senior Vice President of On Location Experiences and a long-time executive at Madison Square Garden, as President of the XFL football team in New York. Duch will be responsible for the team’s fan engagement and business operations, including ticket sales, corporate partnerships, marketing, content, communications, community relations, and the game day experience.
