04/13/20: Ready Nutrition talks adaptation because of the pandemic

Amidst the gloom, there are silver linings. Ready Nutrition was founded in 2012 by former University of Pittsburgh basketball team captain Pat Cavanaugh. According to reports, the Pennsylvania based company is well cash positive and has eclipsed over nine figures in sales in the last 12 months, making it one of the fastest growing companies in the health and wellness product space, offering protein waters, sports drinks, protein and snack bars, protein powders and plant based functional snacks. Last November, the company brought on Aaron Donald of the LA Rams as an investor and owner in the company became the Official Sports Drink of The AAU and its 700,000 athletes. With all that going on Ready has had to grow its social responsibility platform even faster while keeping big box clients happy under COVID-19 Restrictions. We asked Cavanaugh to tell us how a rising brand has adapted to the challenges.

Cavanaugh on how has the company adapted with the restrictions: We are fortunate enough to be in an industry with clean sports nutrition products that continue to be in strong demand. We’ve had to adjust our production so we can service our larger retailers like Costco and Walmart as well as our regional grocery chains across the country. We’ve had to reallocate in store point of sale resources to support the big increase in on-line sales at the same time. Because our products are all-natural, contain little or no sugar with high protein, we’re getting additional requests especially within the healthcare industry and are thankful to be able to support all those requests.

On social responsibility and assistance: We are built on helping the community and making sure we do the right thing. Since Aaron Donald is an investor, partner and involved in so many facets of the business, we have been able to help the communities he lives both in Pittsburgh and Los Angeles especially answering the requests for product. This started with the firefighters and the wild fires in Los Angeles County last fall and now with the nurses and doctors from Allegheny Health Network and UPMC in Pittsburgh. We have also supported Cooper Medical Center in Camden, New Jersey and in the coming weeks USC Medical Center and Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, NJ. We have been able to deliver over $100,000 in complimentary healthy drinks and snacks to those on the front lines in just a few weeks as a very small token of our appreciation.

On the next step of crisis outreach: In addition to the first responders and healthcare workers, we have seen a big need to make sure kids and many of the student athlete communities we normally support, get food and drinks to make sure they are getting proper nutrition and staying healthy. We are working with several groups, including the Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation, to get these healthy products in the hands of the kids who need meals and have been challenged doing so since schooling from home. We are in the process of rolling out to our college teams; Ready Kits, with our all-natural products that will go to student athletes so they can keep on a clean eating program and stay in shape as best they can while at home. Our initial kits have already begun rolling out and will be distributed on both the west and east coasts with more to follow.

On business beyond COVID-19: Before the pandemic, we were continuing our rapid growth in all areas especially our functional beverages while our on-line business was growing just as fast. After having brought on The AAU as a partner and Aaron as an investor/partner, our focus now will be to help and aid those who need it most, while making sure our supply chain remains on point to support our retail partners. Our first priority is the health and safety of our Team Members, their families and all their communities. All of us want to be able to provide as much help as possible to the front line workers in all industries who are putting their lives on the line for us. From a business perspective, we know that over time if you do the right thing in good times and challenging times, help people and provide quality products at a great value, everything else will take care of itself.

PROGRAMMING

The XFL, which cancelled the remainder of its inaugural season last month due to the pandemic, appears likely to stay on the bench after suspending operations and laying off almost all its employees. An ESPN report that that there are no plans to return next year despite the few employees who remain.

Drew Brees has eyes for NBC, according to the New York Post, which broke that the Saints’ QB will sign with NBC Sports after he finishes playing. There, he would be groomed as the potential replacement for Cris Collinsworth on Sunday Night Football, according to the report. When Brees retires from the Saints, he is expected to start as a game analyst on Notre Dame football and as a studio analyst for Football Night in America.

WWE will reportedly resume live television shows beginning tonight for Raw, according to multiple reports. The USA Network series will see WWE run live shows, albeit without fans. Raw and SmackDown are expected to be carried live from WWE’s training facility in Orlando, while NXT is expected to be live from Full Sail University. “Only essential personnel” will be allowed at the venues, a WWE statement to ESPN said.

Meanwhile, Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White called off UFC 249, which was slated to run April 18, amid pressure from ESPN. White previously was moving forward with plans to proceed with the pay-per-view event at the Tachi Palace Casino Resort near Fresno.

Meanwhile, Golf Digest reports that The PGA TOUR is mulling various scenarios and is targeting a return for the Charles Schwab Challenge on May 21 at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth. The tour suspended its season after the first round of the Players Championship last month and has since called off tournaments through the Byron Nelson Championship scheduled for May 7-10.

Continuing the theme, The Premier Lacrosse will postpone the start of its 2020 season due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 season was scheduled to begin play on May 29-30 at Gillette Stadium. “The health of our players, coaches, fans and colleagues are of paramount importance to us as we go through this unprecedented time,” says PLL Co-Founder and CEO Mike Rabil. “As a league, we will continue to adhere to guidelines administered by the CDC, respective state governments, and our hosting venues. This was a difficult decision for our league but a necessary measure to ensure the safety of all parties.”

The new, one-hour NBC Sports Football Flex kicks off today at 11a on NBCSN. The show will feature the most topical news and analysis from NBC Sports’ digital football content, including The Peter King Podcast, Chris Simms Unbuttoned, PFT PM, Rotoworld Football Podcast, Jac Collinsworth’s Distanced Training: Ready to Get Back in the Game, plus Ahmed Fareed with his unique takes on sports during the quarantine. “As the NFL offseason continues and with the draft quickly approaching, we’re excited to create an additional platform for our NBC Sports digital football lineup led by Mike Florio, Peter King, Chris Simms, Jac Collinsworth, Ahmed Fareed and the fantasy football experts at Rotoworld,” said NBC Sports Executive Producer & President of Production, Sam Flood.

The WTA and ATP are launching of a new weekly show called Tennis United that will air every Friday on both Tours’ digital platforms. Greg Norman will host a new live edition of his SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio show, Attack Life Radio tomorrow at 3p. The organization will serve as the first-ever competitive MLB The Show league solely featuring Major League players in an online event to engage fans around the world and raise funds for Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada. The 30-player lineup includes 11 former All-Stars, five World Series Champions and eight players age 25 or younger. Each participant plays in a round-robin format (i.e., playing every team one time) throughout the month of April for a total of 29 regular season, three-inning games. Following this regular season, the top eight teams will advance to the Postseason, which will largely mirror the MLB Postseason format and culminate in a World Series.

Torque Esports entered a broadcast partnership with ESPN for live coverage of its sim racing tournaments with the partnership kicking off over the weekend with the The Race All-Star Series – Fully Charged by ROKiT Phones shown live on ESPN2 at noon.
