Media groups are calling on Congress to provide support to local news media in the next stimulus bill. The News Media Alliance, National Association of Broadcasters, National Newspaper Association and America’s Newspapers want Congress to ensure the ability of local media to seek relief under the Paycheck Protection Program, and to fund federal advertising spending on local media. “Local news provides reliable, fact-based information that is absolutely critical to communities, particularly during events like the COVID-19 crisis,” said News Media Alliance President & CEO David Chavern. “However, the rapidly contracting ad market in response to the pandemic is dealing a sharp and immediate blow to local news publishing. If this continues, there won’t be local journalism in many communities.”

NBC’s Saturday Night Live will be back with original content on April 11 at 11:30p, produced remotely and with social distancing. Segments will include “Weekend Update,” as well as elements from other cast members.

Also back: Tiger King, with an after show hosted by Joel McHale dropping on Netflix Sunday, April 12. Tiger King and I will feature new interviews with the docu-series’ cast of characters including John Reinke, Joshua Dial, John Finlay and Jeff and Lauren Low, among others.

Vice President Pence’s office is blocking top health officials from appearing on CNN, reports the news net, because it has not been airing the daily White House press briefings in full. CNN often only airs the first portion of the briefing, usually with President Trump, then returns to news anchors. “When you guys cover the briefings with the health officials then you can expect them back on your air,” CNN said it was told by a Pence spokesman.

Just because more people are watching the news, doesn’t mean more people approve of it, according to a poll from the Knight Foundation/Gallup Poll. As in 2018 and 2019 polls, 34% of Americans have a very or somewhat favorable of the media now, despite an increase of 13% in attention to national and international news. “Despite the spike in news attention, general attitudes toward the media remain unchanged,” said the study.

No-pain knockouts: FaceBank Group, Floyd Mayweather and ONE Entertainment Group formed a joint venture to create and manage the retired boxing champ’s digital likeness. One project in the works pits Mayweather’s digital likeness against other boxing legends in virtual match-ups, which will be exclusive to live TV streaming platform fuboTV and pay-per-view partners to be announced. FaceBank and fuboTV merged last week.

Nielsen and E.W. Scripps inked a multiyear agreement for measurement services for the Scripps television stations. The deal includes Nielsen’s Local TV Measurement, Nielsen Scarborough, NLTV, Ad Intel, Arianna and Nielsen Grabix. “As local measurement becomes increasingly complex, we are pleased to include Nielsen data in the comprehensive suite of tools we deploy across all of our markets,” said Brian Lawlor, President of Llocal Media at Scripps. “With Nielsen as our partner, we are confident Scripps will continue to provide the highest level of service and expertise to our viewers, our advertising partners and the communities we serve.”

How much of a hit might cable take if live sports remain shut down due to coronavirus concerns? Two thirds of cable subscribers surveyed said live sports were a “significant” reason for signing up, according to a survey of 1003 cable subscribers by Mindnet Analytics. Fourteen percent said the current lack of major live sports could have “big” impact on whether they keep their cable subscription, while 15.4% claimed to be “very likely” to cancel if the NFL season is postponed.

Sony has invested $400 million in Bilibili, a Chinese video-sharing site. “The strategic investment and business cooperation further align our goals to bring best-in-class content offerings and services to our users, as we increase our domestic stronghold in animation and mobile games,” said Rui Chen, CEO and chairman of Bilibili. “We look forward to joining efforts on a broader scale to fulfill the tremendous and growing entertainment needs in China.”

Landmark Studio Group is developing spy drama series The Operative, created by Noah Nelson (CSI: New York, Hawaii Five-0), with Craig T. Nelson (Grace and Frankie, Coach) set to star as a retired intelligence operative. The series is loosely based on the book “Code Name Stinger” by Harvey Gomberg, who will consult on the show.

Nickelodeon cut a deal with Scooter Braun’s SB Projects to bring The BeatBuds to TV, with an animated preschool series based on kids’ music duo. Each episode of The BeatBuds (working title) will follow the musical adventures of Jonny, Matty and the rest of the ‘Buds, and feature an original song.

Fuse Media greenlit two linear series that were initially incubated by the Fuse Content Studio for digital: Bust It Open, tapping into the unboxing genre, and food series Struggle Gourmet. Among renewals are Fuse’s first foray into adult animation, Sugar and Toys, and Made from Scratch for second seasons.

In response to the production shut-down caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Endemol Shine Group employees will either be furloughed or have their pay cut by 30%. The cuts will take effect April 13, and be reviewed at the end of May. “Our priority in navigating these difficult times is to keep all our staff employed and these temporary and progressive measures, shared across the UK group, will enable us to do this,” said a company spokesperson.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Betty, following a diverse group of women in the male-oriented world of skateboarding, launches on HBO Friday, May 1 at 11p. Six-part, half-hour series is based on the feature Skate Kitchen.

Sports host Rich Eisen lost his TV show when Audience Network folded earlier this year, but now he’ll get a two-month run on NBC Sports Network. “We are excited to bring Rich and The Rich Eisen Show on board for the next two months as we continue to offer special programming in these uncertain times,” said Jon Miller, President of Programming for NBC Sports and NBCSN. Eisen’s show is a simulcast of his SiriusXM program.

TruTV’s Tirdy Works debuts Tuesday, May 5 at 10p. Unscripted sitcom is set in a small rural town with a moose turd business.

La Reina del Sur 2 returns to Telemundo with a special edition on Tuesday, April 21 at 10p. The super series will include never-before-seen footage, scenes and images.

Among the coronavirus-themed new series from Complex, airing across its digital and social platforms, are Show & Tell, in which celebrities reveal what they’re doing while quarantined; The In Crowd, featuring celebs walking through what a self-isolation day looks like; and House Calls, Instagram live sessions during which doctors answer people’s questions about COVID-19.

AccuWeather is producing a new Living Well segment that touches on mental health during the pandemic. The “Ad Daily Dose of Sunshine” segment features licensed psychologist Doctor Erik Fisher and airs Monday-Friday through April 17 at 8a and 6p.

Fox News Channel is going to church on Sunday. Live Easter programming, “America Together: Keeping the Faith,” will encompass broadcasts from church services around the world, beginning at 5a with Easter Sunday services from St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

TeleXitos multicast network will broadcast Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle’s live Easter Sunday Mass at 2p. Spanish-language audiences across select Telemundo markets can find the special Sunday presentation (check local listings).

Cozi TV is running a marathon of the original Will & Grace series (1998-2006) on Sunday, April 19 starting at 11a. The stunt wraps up with the original series finale, which has not been seen in syndication because of the rebooted series storyline. NBC’s series finale airs Thursday, April 23 at 9p.

Hubble: Thirty Years of Discovery debuts Sunday, April 19 at 8p. The two-hour special on Science Channel tells the story of how the Hubble telescope was created, and include interviews with astronauts Michael Massimino, Kathryn Thornton, Story Musgrave, Steven Smith and John Grunsfeld.

TBS marks the 15th anniversary of American Dad! with a marathon event kicking off Tuesday, April 14. The stunt offers a selection of episodes picked by series’ co-creator Matt Weitzman, and center on a different character each day, April 14-17 and April 21-24. The event culminates with a marathon Monday, April 27 with Weitzman’s top 15 favorite episodes.

CONNECTING IN A COVID-19 WORLD

A $100 million relief fund to assist employees impacted by the health crisis has been set up at ViacomCBS, and will also support grants by the Motion Picture & Television Fund and the Actors Fund. “As we look for other ways to support our communities, we’ll also be officially launching the new ViacomCBS Employee Matching Gifts Program in the coming weeks,” said CEO Bob Bakish. “Beginning in the US and UK – and expanding to other regions in the future – ViacomCBS will match up to $1,000 per year of charitable contributions from full-time employees Vice President and below.”

Liberty Global, parent company of Virgin Media, created a $4 million fund to help employees affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, including a $1 million donation from CEO Mike Fries. “Those with elderly parents, partners out of work, or other challenges need additional help to get through this crisis,” said Fries. “We want them to know that we are here for them in their time of need. I am hopeful that the Liberty Global Response Fund continues to grow in size and will serve as a model for future support inside our company.”

TikTok’s biggest star, Charli D’Amelio, is amplifying her platform to promote social-distancing and raise money for Feeding America and Matthew 25 Food Pantry during the coronavirus crisis. In partnership with Procter & Gamble, D’Amelio launched the #DistanceDance initiative, encouraging her 46.9 million followers to post a dance with the hashtag. “It’s really nice to know that while we are social distancing, we can still find ways to feel connected… I think it’s great it has caught on and also helped raise money for really important charities,” she tells Cynopsis. The initiative, launched in late March, thus far has logged more than 9.9 billion views, and P&G already has upped its donation threshold from the first 3 million video posts to the first 4 million. As Food Network and its stars go live on social media to bring comfort food to fans, the net is also releasing backgrounds for Zoom. Backdrops come from sets including Chopped, The Kitchen, Guy’s Grocery Games and more.

TikTok is donating $25 million for ads to help nonprofits, health sources and local authorities send public health messages, and supporting the rebuilding of small and medium businesses with $100 million in ad credits. “Cherished patterns of life are being disrupted; in-person contact with friends, family, colleagues, and communities has been altered or ceased altogether; and we’re united in our concern for loved ones who are working hard on the front lines of the global health battle,” wrote Alex Zhu, President at the Chinese video-sharing network, in a post.

STREAMING SNIPPETS

Disney+ has shot to 50 million subs worldwide, five months after launch in the US. Over the last two weeks, the service became available in the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, India, Spain and Switzerland.

TiVo reports its ad-supported streaming service, TiVo+, is up 41% in total hours of time watched since last week, with people spending “A LOT of time” watching The Pet Collective. TiVo+ launched in October.

Gaming network VENN has set July as launch date, with original programming currently in development covering reality, news, competition, late night, music and more. VENN (Videogame Entertainment and News Network) had originally planned a later launch, but with video games and TV viewing on the rise, made the decision to ramp up early.

The Simpsons animated short film Maggie Simpson in “Playdate with Destiny” drops today on Disney+. The short was originally released in theaters before Disney and Pixar’s Onward.

FilmRise landed exclusive streaming rights to the Peter Rodgers Organization Film and Television library for North America. The deal includes 1,115 episodes of classic content including The Rifleman, My Favorite Martian, and Hopalong Cassidy.

Shudder original series Cursed Films was the second most-watched series premiere in Shudder history, behind Creepshow. Cursed Films also stands as the service’s most-watched documentary premiere (series or film) ever.

Global information services and technology company Neustar and iSpot.tv, focused on real-time TV ad measurement and attribution, are partnering to make iSpot’s TV ad measurement data available within Neustar’s Identity Management, Multi-Touch Attribution and Unified Marketing Analytics platforms. The deal is meant to provide a granular and complete view of the full customer journey inclusive of linear, addressable, and OTT TV exposure. “This is a marketer’s holy grail. We are excited to join forces to deliver on an integrated digital and television strategy,” said Sean Muller, Founder & CEO of iSpot.tv.

MIT researchers have devised a system for COVID-19 contact tracing, aimed at curbing the spread of the outbreak while offering privacy protection. The method, inspired by Apple’s “Find My” system for locating missing Mac and iOS hardware, would work through an app installed on phones.

Fremantle and Syco Entertainment have teamed with Shanghai Media Group to develop BBC One dance format The Magnificent Dancer for China’s Dragon TV. Series is set to launch this spring.
