HORSE it is! ESPN, the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association announced that Chris Paul of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks and Tamika Catchings will headline the list of eight NBA and WNBA players and legends who will take part in the new NBA HORSE Challenge Presented by State Farm, running exclusively on ESPN and streamed via the ESPN App. The event takes place Sunday at 7p, as the eight match shots against one another in a single-elimination HORSE competition from their respective, isolated home courts. ESPN NBA commentator Mark Jones will serve as the official host. State Farm will donate more than $200,000 on behalf of the participants to charities focused on coronavirus response efforts. The semifinals and the championship game will air on April 16 at 9p.

PROGRAMMING

Monday will see NBC Sports launch two special weeks of Olympic Games Week coverage on NBCSN, reliving nearly 100 hours of historic Olympic Games moments from the past 30+ years, featuring the 2008 Beijing Games, 2012 London Games, 2016 Rio Games, as well as Team USA dynasties, including men’s and women’s basketball and women’s gymnastics. NBC Olympics primetime host Mike Tirico will introduce nightly coverage throughout both weeks of Olympic Games Week. The opening night of Olympic Games Week, beginning at 7p, features three medal performances (two gold and one silver) from the U.S. women’s gymnastics team.

Germany’s top two soccer leagues might restart play in empty stadiums as early as next month. Christian Seifert, head of the German Football League, told the New York Times that the first-tier Bundesliga and second-tier 2 Bundesliga plan to return to action by the beginning of May. Seifert said the games, which could be played in as many as 36 stadiums, would be televised through the end of the season in June.

The National Lacrosse League officially cancelled the remainder of the regular season. League officials are looking at any number of scenarios to return to play when all stakeholders and health officials deem that possible. “With three weekends left in the regular season and the uncertainty about resumption during that time, we decided it is in the best interests of our players, coaches, staff, partners and fans to remove any uncertainty. Our goal is to find the best, and safest, solution for resumption of play, but what that looks like, and when that occurs, cannot be determined today,” said NLL Commissioner Nick Sakiewicz. “Our primary focus is the long term health of all involved in the sport of lacrosse from a personal and a business standpoint, and we are consulting with our board, medical and municipal authorities, as well as leadership in other organizations across sports and entertainment, to determine when we will be able to effectively move forward. Whenever that is, we have plans in place that continue to evolve, and we will be ready to restart the process correctly and effectively.”

The National Hockey League will serve up NHL Hat Trick Trivia Hosted by P.K. Subban, a new weekly show premiering on Saturday. The 30-minute show will feature fans answering a trio of hockey trivia questions from their homes, along with appearances from NHL players and celebrities, for the chance to win NHL prizes. Hosted by New Jersey Devils defenseman P.K. Subban, the program will air every Saturday at Noon on Sportsnet and at 12:30p on the NHL’s Facebook, YouTube and IGTV platforms. NHL Network and NBCSN will air the show every Tuesday at 9:30p and Wednesday at 6p, respectively, starting next week.

The NFL announced that the 2020 NFL Draft will evolve into a three-day virtual fundraiser benefitting six charities – selected by the NFL Foundation – that are battling the spread of COVID-19 and delivering relief to millions in need. The “Draft-A-Thon” will be featured across the live Draft coverage on ABC, ESPN, ESPN Deportes and NFL Network from April 23-25 and pay tribute to healthcare workers and first responders in a variety of ways. Nonprofits include: the American Red Cross; CDC Foundation’s All of Us: Combat Coronavirus Campaign; Feeding America’s COVID-19 Response Fund; Meals on Wheels COVID-19 Response Fund; the Salvation Army; and United Way’s COVID-19 Community Response and Recovery Fund. “As we face this global health crisis together, we are filled with gratitude for the extraordinary work of first responders, healthcare workers and many others who are helping those in need,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “The Draft-A-Thon will deliver much-needed funding to many who are suffering as well as those on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. Conducting this event virtually, and taking all necessary precautions while doing so, underscores the importance of staying home and staying strong during this unprecedented moment in our history.”

PlayIndiana revealed that the first weeks of the coronavirus shutdown cost the state an estimated $125 million in wagers in March. “This is an unprecedented stoppage for legal sportsbooks, and there is no playbook for them to follow to help manage the crisis,” said Dustin Gouker, lead analyst for PlayIndiana.com. “Obviously, the sports betting industry is just one facet in a crisis that is affecting us all, too often tragically. But it is a business that employs hundreds in Indiana and generates millions in state taxes. And the bottom line is that there will be no significant relief until the sports world begins to open back up.”

FaZe Clan locked in a partnership with e-commerce and culture platform NTWRK, which includes investor Jimmy Iovine, with the company also leading the latest round of funding for the gaming industry heavyweight. SPORTS BROADCAST JOURNAL w/DAVID J. HALBERSTAM

In 2022, Mike Tirico will be given a platform on NBC that will make him the lead voice of NBC Sports. Not since the days of Brent Musburger at CBS or Bob Costas at NBC will a network voice be as prominent. Tirico will do Sunday night NFL play-by-play (assuming NBC assumes its NFL rights) and serve as host of anything major the network carries, The Indy 500, horse racing’s Triple Crown and the Olympics.

Tirico is now hosting a daily show on NBCSN. But his guests this week like Al Michaels, Brian Kelly and Jim Nantz wouldn’t venture a guess if and when seasons will commence or resume.
**
Bob Costas was asked by an Albany, New York sports talk show how his Syracuse basketball team will do next season. He suggested that we’re getting ahead of ourselves. He wondered on-air whether campuses will even open next fall?
**
The answers vary on whether on-air talent will take hits. One well known agent told me, “Other than a few freelance people who get paid per event, everyone has been paid in full so far and nobody has been remotely even asked to take any cuts. That might change. But no sign yet.”

The Yankees’ radio team of John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman, employees of Entercom, might be subject to a 20% cut in salary. The company, owners of New York radio station WFAN, is cutting employees’ salaries pretty much across the board.
Contracts vary. They have their own sets of guidelines. What’s likely to come under question is whether employers can invoke force majeure clauses, known as an Acts of God. Will the pandemic event qualify as force majeure? Sounds like lawyers will be busy arguing over this as it pertains to many contracts, sports and others.
